Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book of Indian Botany This little book is, in substance, my Lessons in Elementary Botany adapted for use in India. But in preparing it, I have had in view the want, often felt, of some handy re'sume of Indian Botany, which might be serviceable not only to residents in India, but also to any one about to proceed thither, desirous of getting some preliminary idea of the Botany of that country. I might have entitled the book Illustrations of Indian Natural Orders of Plants 3 but as the same chapters, with necessary alterations, on the Elements of Structural and Physiological Botany are prefixed to the systematic part which I originally drew up for my previous work, the whole thing seems to me tolerably suited to serve as a First Book of Indian Botany. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses Into the Life of Indian Plants, an Elementary Indian Botany Some years ago I was asked by a number of friends in Mangalore to help them in the study of Botany. The promise given at that time led me to compile this little book, which, I hope, will rouse their interest in the life of plants they were so anxious to know. At the same time I was prompted to come forward in -writing a simple book on Indian Botany by the sad dis.appointment I felt when I witnessed the poor and lifeless 7 way in which object-lessons on plants were taught in our elementary schools. I understood that, if any improvement in this subject was to be made, the teachers themselves had first to be interested in nature-study. And as a treatment of Botany in the old way could not secure the object in view, I adopted a course which I was glad to find in Dr. O. Schmeil's Manual of Botany, intended to open to any student of ordinary intelligence an understanding of plant-life and to enlarge and quicken in him a sense of that infinite harmony which runs through every part of the Creators marvellous plan of nature,;- which would make the educational value of this subject equal to that of any other subject taught in schools. "To this end I combined the structural description of plants with a plain description of their vital processes. The technical terms, which so often form the crux of beginners, are reduced to the smallest number possible, and many statements are illustrated by suitable cuts. Book excerpt: Born in the mid 18th century, William Roxburgh was brought up in the centre of the Edinburgh Enlightenment, with all the patronage an intellectual curiosity that this entailed. After joining the East India Company as an Assistant Surgeon on one of their ships, he joined the staff of the General hospital at Madras. Soon he was Company Naturalist, describing many species for the first time which inspired some beautiful watercolour drawings by Indian artists, copies of which were sent to Sir Joseph Banks at Kew. Arising from his scientific work, he was appointed the first paid Superintendent of the Calcutta Botanic Garden in 1793, where he continued his previous experimental work as well as looking into the introduction of a wide range of crops. Always looking for ways to improve the lot of native workers, to reduce the impact of frequent famines, he suggested labour-intensive methods by developing local skills and introducing suitable plants could be used for food. With important work also on the botany of the Cape of Good House as well as St Helena, and significant contributions to the fields of meteorology, zoology and geology, Roxburgh's obituaries referred to him as the 'greatest botanist since Linnaeus.' This is the first full biography of 'The Founding Father of Indian Botany.' Beautifully illustrated throughout with archival material, botanical drawings and photographs, some published here for the first time, this joint publication with the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a must for historians, botanist and general readers alike.

Hardly emphasize that in using this manual as a school-book the plants studied are to be put into the student's hand, and that the types described should, if the climate permits, be planted in a school garden for the continued observation of the various stages of their life. Many of them may, at least in the West Coast of India, be procured in any field, wood, or garden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
