Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ex-colleague, a school librarian, once told me, much to my surprise, that quite a lot of children came into the library at lunch-time to read plays, but that there were not so many available. I therefore offer this set of 5 plays partially to fill the gap, whether merely for reading or even for performing. They range from the first two fairly simple ones, 'The Vase' and 'Neighbours' to the more complicated such as' Aline's Dream' and 'Mr. Far West'. You may note some familiar themes, which I may deliberately or not have borrowed. Aline is definitely not Dorothy, although 'Little Red Robin Hood' and 'Little Horrors' echo some of the ideas in my straightforward stories in 'Colin the Librarian'. The plays may sometimes seem to have serious ideas, such as loyalty and betrayal, but generally they are tongue-in-cheek and intended as (hopefully) a bit of fun. My own favourites are the rather spare 'Pythonesque', and to my mind, especially 'The Haunted Bedroom' with its spooky ending. However, I humbly offer them for you (once again hopefully) to enjoy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the world of humour. What makes human beings laugh can be broadly defined under three headings: someone else's misfortune, someone else's misunderstanding or someone else's stupidity. The keywords here are "someone else's" because, let's face it, most silly things are much funnier when they happen to someone else. Neil Hutchison, creator of The Fool in Paradise, has collected thousands of jokes, then catalogued and listed them in this first volume of the Fool's Best Jokes. Now the many fans of the Fool will not have to be told that the jokes will veer away from political correctness until they are travelling in the absolute opposite direction. Now, if you have never read any of the many books about the Fool be prepared to be shocked. This book is not recommended to be read in situations where others may report you for laughing and talking to yourself. It's not recommended for those of a more liberal bent, be it feminism or any other trendy ism. The author refuses to take responsibility for any medical problems that this book may engender in readers. Life is ShortBreak the Rules Forgive Quickly Love Truly Laugh Uncontrollably ... and ... Never Regret Anything That Made You Smile

Book excerpt: Derivatives Algorithms — Volume 1: Bones (Second Edition) is for practicing quants who already have some expertise in risk-neutral pricing and in programming, and want to build a reusable and extensible library. Rather than specific models, this volume provides foundations common to all pricing, such as C++ code structure, interfaces, and several widely used mathematical methods. It also presents a set of protocols, by which models and trades can collaborate to support pricing and hedging tasks, and illustrates their use with several example trade types and models. Readers will learn to deploy the results of their research work with productivity-enhancing methods that are not taught elsewhere, including object serialization, code generation, and separation of concerns for continuous improvement. Of all the books on derivatives pricing, only Derivatives Algorithms shows the internals of a high-quality working library. The new Second Edition is more accessible to readers who are not already familiar with the book's concepts; there is an increased focus on explaining the motivation for each step, and on providing a high-level perspective on design choices. The chapters on Persistence and Protocols have been substantially rewritten, providing motivating examples and additional detail in the code. The treatment of yield curves and funding has been modernized, with the increased sophistication required by today's markets. And a new final chapter, describing the next phase in the evolution of derivatives valuation and risk, has been added.

Essays of Elia is a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb, first published in book form in 1823, with a second volume, Last Essays of Elia, issued in 1833. The essays in the collection first began appearing in The London Magazine in 1820 and continued to 1825. The personal and conversational tone of the essays has charmed many readers. Lamb himself is the Elia of the collection, and his sister Mary is "Cousin Bridget." Charles first used the pseudonym Elia for an essay on the South Sea House, where he had worked decades earlier; Elia was the last name of an Italian man who worked there at the same time as Charles, and after that essay the name stuck. Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807. The book is designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to the young. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies; they wrote the preface between them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was there more to comedy than Chaucer, the Second Shepherds’ Play, or Shakespeare? Of course! But, for a real taste of medieval and Renaissance humor and in-your-face slapstick, one must cross the Channel to France, where over two hundred extant farces regularly dazzled crowds with blistering satires. Dwarfing all other contemporaneous theatrical repertoires, the boisterous French corpus is populated by lawyers, lawyers everywhere. No surprise there. The lion’s share of mostly anonymous farces was written by barristers, law students, and legal apprentices. Famous for skewering unjust judges and irreligious ecclesiastics, they belonged to a 10,000-member legal society known as the Basoche, which flourished between 1450 and 1550. What is more, their dramatic send-ups of real and fictional court cases were still going strong on the eve of Molière, resilient against those who sought to censor and repress them. The suspenseful wait to see justice done has always made for high drama or, in this case, low drama. But, for centuries, the scripts for these outrageous shows were available only in French editions gathered from scattered print and manuscript sources. In Trial by Farce, prize-winning theater historian Jody Enders brings twelve of the funniest legal farces to English-speaking audiences in a refreshingly uncensored but philologically faithful vernacular. Newly conceived as much for scholars as for students and theater practitioners, this repertoire and its familiar stock characters come vividly to life as they struggle to negotiate the limits of power, politics, class, gender, and, above all, justice. Through the distinctive blend of wit, social critique, and breathless boisterousness that is farce, we gain a new understanding of comedy itself as form of political correction. In ways presciently modern and even postmodern, farce paints a different cultural picture of the notoriously authoritarian Middle Ages with its own vision of liberty and justice for all. Theater eternally offers ways for new generations to raise their voices and act.

He spends time with pirates and assassins, a succubus, a shape-shifting monster, a madman who can see the future, and Santa Claus. The Immortal Chronicles is an ongoing series of novellas from Adam, the star narrator of the Immortal Novel trilogy (IMMORTAL, HELLENIC IMMORTAL and IMMORTAL AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD.)
