Book excerpt: We provide a comprehensive empirical analysis of stock-price behavior around the ex-dividend day in Japan. We find that prices rise on the ex-day and that dividend-related tax effects appear to be secondary. Returns around ex-dividend days are dominated by the proximity of many ex-days to the fiscal year-end. Excess returns of 1%, which are independent of any dividend-related considerations, are higher than round-trip transaction costs on medium-sized transactions. Prices seem to imply selling pressure before, and buying pressure at the start of, the new fiscal year. These trading patterns appear to be motivated by intercorporate manipulative trading around the end of the firms' fiscal year, which are unrelated to dividends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To explain the ex-day stock price behaviour, previous research has mostly focused on dividend yield and expected return. Most of these studies concentrated on US markets and were conducted in a stable economic condition. This paper examines the most liquid common stock (blue-chip) prices behaviour on the ex-day in a period of financial crisis and covers four major capital markets from different geographic locations (the US, the UK, Japan, and China). On the New York and Shanghai Stock Exchanges, we observe that the stock prices drop does not differ from the dividend amount on the ex-dividend day and there is no evidence of abnormal return and short-term trading. On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the stock prices fall less than the dividend amount, which is in contrast to the London Stock Exchange, where the stock prices fall more than the dividend amount. On the Tokyo and London Stock Exchanges, we observe abnormal return and short-term trading around the ex-day.http://dx.doi.org/10.5296/ajfa.v5i1.1948.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of a two-part series examines three major topics. First, it devotes five chapters to the classical issue of capital structure choice. Second, it focuses on the value-implications of major corporate investment and restructuring decisions, and then concludes by surveying the role of pay-for-performance type executive compensation contracts on managerial incentives and risk-taking behavior. In collaboration with the first volume, this handbook takes stock of the main empirical findings to date across an unprecedented spectrum of corporate finance issues. The surveys are written by leading empirical researchers that remain active in their respective areas of interest. With few exceptions, the writing style makes the chapters accessible to industry practitioners. For doctoral students and seasoned academics, the surveys offer dense roadmaps into the empirical research landscape and provide suggestions for future work. Nine original chapters summarize research advances and future topics in the classical issues of capital structure choice, corporate investment behavior, and firm value Multinational comparisons underline the volume's empirical perspectives Complements the presentation of econometric issues, banking, and capital acquisition research covered by Volume 1

Book excerpt: Real stock prices seem to overreact to changes in long-term interest rates. That is, real stock prices drop when long-term interest rates rise (and rise when they fall) more than would be implied by a rational expectations present value model where expectations are based on a vector autoregression. This overreaction is not associated with any overreaction to changes in the short-run inflation rate. Over the last century real stock prices have shown little reaction to changes in inflation rates, and according to the model they should show little reaction. These conclusions were reached from an analysis of annual data in the united states 1871 to 1989 and the united Kingdom 1918 to 1989.

Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on the Greek economic challenges and helps readers understand the current debt crisis. Chapters from leading experts in the field identify and outline potential solutions to the on-going decline of the Greek economy by considering both Eurozone-adopted current policy framework explanations and potential alternative explanations. In contrast to the standard chronological approach toward the Greek debt crisis typically adopted by other texts, this book draws on the experience and views of specialized economists and offers divergent opinions that could potentially form alternative solutions. It will be of interest to researchers and academics interested in the Greek economy, modern financial modelling, and risk management.
