Book excerpt: The Department of Defense (DOD) is currently moving towards the concept of "ecosystem management" to more effectively protect, sustain, and/or enhance natural and cultural resources critical to the training mission. Ecosystem management is an approach to natural resources management that recognizes the interrelationships of ecological processes that link soils, plants, animals, minerals, climate, water, and topography as a living system. This system is important to and is affected by human activity beyond traditional commodity and amenity uses and acknowledges the importance of ecosystem services such as water conservation, oxygen recharge, and nutrient recycling. Some of the factors that must be considered in ecosystem management include the effects of soil erosion on water and air quality, potential damage to wildlife habitat, and in the case of DOD, the effects on the ability to train efficiently and effectively.

Book excerpt: Because soil erosion and deposition have negative repercussions on military preparedness and the environment, the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) has funded efforts to develop geographic information system (GIS) tools and methods to enhance the accuracy, spatial prediction, and visual representation of erosion and deposition on military lands. During Fiscal Year 1997, the CASC2D model was modified to include an upland erosion algorithm. The modified model produced accurate runoff hydrographs, but fell short in predicting sediment discharge. Part of the inaccuracy is attributable to channel erosion not taken into account by the current CASC2D model. The Unit Stream Power Erosion and Deposition (USPED) model was enhanced to include tangential curvature. The modification greatly improves the accuracy of erosion and deposition predictions in areas of convergent slopes. The process-based SIMulated Water Erosion (SIMWE) model was used to investigate the effects of rainfall excess, surface roughness, critical shear stress, detachment capacity, and transport capacity on erosion and deposition. Results of initial investigations conducted to determine if the SIMWE model could be used to predict the consequences of common erosion and sediment control practices were promising. Various GIS tools were developed to help in processing and visualization of distributed data.

WEPP input files, described in this publication, predict soil erosion from forest roads, harvest areas, and burned areas. These files are part of a growing database.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erosion following wildfire can be as much as 1000 times the erosion from an undisturbed forest. In August, 2005, the largest fire in the lower 48 states occurred in the Umatilla National Forest in Southeast Washington. Researchers from the Rocky Mountain Research Station assisted the forest in estimating soil erosion using three different applications of the WEPP model. GeoWEPP was used to determine the onsite distribution of soil erosion. WEPP Windows Watershed Version was used to estimate peak runoff rates of each of the ten small watersheds analyzed. The ERMiT interface to WEPP was used to estimate the probability of erosion amounts on selected hillslopes, and the benefits of mulching those slopes. Within the three days available for analysis, about 38 percent of the burned area was analyzed. This paper summarizes the analytical methods, and the findings of the prediction runs.

Book excerpt: In recognition of the negative repercussions that soil erosion and sediment deposition can have on military preparedness and the environment, the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) funded a research effort between Fiscal Years 1993 and 1998 to develop geographic information system (GIS) tools and methods to enhance the accuracy, spatial prediction and visual representation of erosion and deposition on military lands. Because of the variability in the quality and availability of data to support erosion/deposition modeling efforts, the project sought to enhance both relatively simple empirical models and more data-intensive process-based models. In addition, the project addressed the demands for long-term average annual estimates of erosion/deposition and single event-based predictions.
