Book Synopsis Measuring Road Safety with Surrogate Events by : Andrew Tarko
Download or read book Measuring Road Safety with Surrogate Events written by Andrew Tarko and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring Road Safety Using Surrogate Events provides researchers and practitioners with the tools they need to quickly and effectively measure traffic safety. As traditional crash-based safety analyses are being undermined by today’s growing use of intelligent vehicular and road safety technologies, crash surrogates--or near misses--can be more effectively used to measure the future risk of crashes. This book advances the idea of using these near-crash techniques to deliver quicker and more adequate measurements of safety. It explores the relationships between traffic conflicts and crashes using an extrapolation of observed events rather than post-crash data, which is significantly slower to obtain. Readers will find sound estimation methods based on rigorous scientific principles, offering compelling new tools to better equip researchers to understand road safety and its factors. Consolidates the latest updates/ideas from disparate places into a single resource Establishes a consistent use of key terms, definitions and concepts to help codify this emerging field Contains numerous application-oriented case studies throughout Includes learning aids, such as chapter objectives, a glossary, and links to data used in examples

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Signal Timing and Coordination Procedures by : E. D. Arnold
Download or read book Evaluation of Signal Timing and Coordination Procedures written by E. D. Arnold and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a review of available literature, recommended procedures for timing the various types of signals are provided. Specifically, procedures are included for both pretimed and vehicle-actuated controllers located at isolated intersections and at intersections in a signal system. Simplicity and ease of use are emphasized as the targeted users are field technicians and those responsible for signals in small cities and towns. A separate Field Manual has been prepared which is intended to provide a concise and easily applied set of procedures. Detailed theory and logic behind the procedures are provided in the Technical Report, as are brief descriptions of current computer programs which provide timing information. The Technical Report also presents the results of a questionnaire survey which had the objective of determining the types of signal equipment used in Virginia.
Book Synopsis Evaluation of Video Detection Systems and Development of Application Guidelines at Signalized Intersections by : PeiFeng Fu
Download or read book Evaluation of Video Detection Systems and Development of Application Guidelines at Signalized Intersections written by PeiFeng Fu and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of a study on evaluating three major video imaging vehicle detection systems (VIVDS) currently deployed in Nevada's urban areas. The report first provides a brief review of the features and functions of some major VIVDSs. The evaluation was based on videos collected at selected intersections in both Northern Nevada and Southern Nevada. The dataset included a total of 10 intersections consisting of 30 intersection approaches and about 48 hours of video for each approach. These videos were directly recorded with detection overlays from the VIVDSs at the sites. The detection accuracy was later verified manually by watching video playbacks in the lab. The performance of the VIVDS was assessed based on the accuracy level, taking into account the total missed and false detections. Missed and false detections were the two major sources of error considered in this study. Specific detection errors and possible causes were discussed for each site. Recommendations were provided for potentially reducing video detection errors. A set of guidelines were also provided for improving VIVDS' performance at existing intersections or future deployments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report serves as a comprehensive guide to traffic signal timing and documents the tasks completed in association with its development. The focus of this document is on traffic signal control principles, practices, and procedures. It describes the relationship between traffic signal timing and transportation policy and addresses maintenance and operations of traffic signals. It represents a synthesis of traffic signal timing concepts and their application and focuses on the use of detection, related timing parameters, and resulting effects to users at the intersection. It discusses advanced topics briefly to raise awareness related to their use and application. The purpose of the Signal Timing Manual is to provide direction and guidance to managers, supervisors, and practitioners based on sound practice to proactively and comprehensively improve signal timing. The outcome of properly training staff and proactively operating and maintaining traffic signals is signal timing that reduces congestion and fuel consumption ultimately improving our quality of life and the air we breathe. This manual provides an easy-to-use concise, practical and modular guide on signal timing. The elements of signal timing from policy and funding considerations to timing plan development, assessment, and maintenance are covered in the manual. The manual is the culmination of research into practices across North America and serves as a reference for a range of practitioners, from those involved in the day to day management, operation and maintenance of traffic signals to those that plan, design, operate and maintain these systems.

Åström and Murray then develop and explain tools in the frequency domain, including transfer functions, Nyquist analysis, PID control, frequency domain design, and robustness. Features a new chapter on design principles and tools, illustrating the types of problems that can be solved using feedback Includes a new chapter on fundamental limits and new material on the Routh-Hurwitz criterion and root locus plots Provides exercises at the end of every chapter Comes with an electronic solutions manual An ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate students Indispensable for researchers seeking a self-contained resource on control theory
Book Synopsis Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors by : Kyandoghere Kyamakya
Download or read book Intelligent Transportation Related Complex Systems and Sensors written by Kyandoghere Kyamakya and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building around innovative services related to different modes of transport and traffic management, intelligent transport systems (ITS) are being widely adopted worldwide to improve the efficiency and safety of the transportation system. They enable users to be better informed and make safer, more coordinated, and smarter decisions on the use of transport networks. Current ITSs are complex systems, made up of several components/sub-systems characterized by time-dependent interactions among themselves. Some examples of these transportation-related complex systems include: road traffic sensors, autonomous/automated cars, smart cities, smart sensors, virtual sensors, traffic control systems, smart roads, logistics systems, smart mobility systems, and many others that are emerging from niche areas. The efficient operation of these complex systems requires: i) efficient solutions to the issues of sensors/actuators used to capture and control the physical parameters of these systems, as well as the quality of data collected from these systems; ii) tackling complexities using simulations and analytical modelling techniques; and iii) applying optimization techniques to improve the performance of these systems.
