Book excerpt: The effects of injection pressure and orifice diameter on the lift-off length of a direct-injection (DI) diesel spray (defined as the farthest upstream location of high temperature combustion) were investigated using a natural light emission imaging technique. The lift-off length experiments were conducted in a constant-volume combustion vessel under quiescent, heavy-duty DI diesel engine conditions using a Phillips research grade No. 2 diesel fuel. The results show that natural light emission at 310 nm provides an excellent marker of the lift-off length. At this location, natural light emission at 310 nm is dominated by OH chemiluminescence generated by high-temperature combustion chemistry. Lift-off lengths determined from images of natural light emission at 310 nm show that as either injection pressure (i.e., injection velocity) or orifice diameter increase, the lift-off length increases. The observed lift-off length increase was linearly dependent on injection velocity, the same dependency as previously noted for gas jets. The lift-off length increase with increasing orifice diameter, however, is different than the independence of lift-off length on orifice diameter noted for gas jets An important overall observation was made by considering the lift-off length data in conjunction with data from recent investigations of liquid-phase fuel penetration and spray development. The combined data suggests that a systematic evolution of the relationship and interaction between various processes in a DI diesel spray has been occurring over time, as injection pressures have been increased and orifice diameters reduced as part of efforts to meet emissions regulations. The trends observed may eventually help explain effects of parameters such as injection pressure and orifice diameter on emissions.

Spray characteristic of diesel fuel injection is one of the most important factors in diesel combustion and pollutant emissions where the interval between the onset of combustion and the evaporation of atomized fuel is relatively short. Therefore, this project is to study the spray simulation of diesel fuel using valve covered orifice (VCO) nozzle injector in the closed chamber. Three main components are focused on this paper, first is the relation between the spray characteristic influences of the various ambient temperature,. The second focus is the influences of the injection pressure,to the spray characteristic and the third focus is relation between the various diameter of nozzle hole size to the spray characteristic. Good spray characteristic leads to the good drivability, high combustion efficiency and stoichiometric air-fuel mixture. Therefore,Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method using ANSYS Fluent simulation software is used for this purpose. The simulation of injection spray in chamber is conducted by using diesel fuel with the single and double-hole Valve Covered Orifice (VCO) nozzle, injection pressure, were various in range 5 KPa - 150 MPa, the ambient pressure, at atmosphere pressure at 101.325 Pa, the ambient temperature,was various in range of 273 K - 1000 K and at the same time iteration.

Book excerpt: Ducted fuel injection (DFI) has been proposed as a strategy to enhance the fuel/charge-gas mixing within the combustion chamber of a direct-injection mixing-controlled compression-ignition engine. The concept involves injecting each fuel spray through a small tube within the combustion chamber to facilitate the creation of a leaner mixture in the autoignition zone, relative to a conventional free-spray configuration (i.e., a fuel spray that is not surrounded by a duct). This dissertation investigates the effects of ducted fuel injection on engine-out emissions and efficiency with two-orifice and four-orifice injector tips across a wide range of conditions. A numerical study contributes to the understanding of the fluid flow effects of DFI. The experiments in chapter two use a two-orifice fuel injector to test two duct configurations relative to conventional diesel combustion. The result is that DFI is confirmed to be effective at curtailing engine-out soot emissions. It also breaks the tradeoff between emissions of soot and nitrogen oxides (NO[subscript x]) by simultaneously attenuating soot and NO[subscript x] with increasing dilution. The third chapter expands on the second by comparing ducted fuel injection to conventional diesel combustion over a wide range of operating conditions and at higher loads (up to 8.7 bar gross indicated mean effective pressure) with a four-orifice fuel injector. This chapter is achieved through sweeps of intake-oxygen mole-fraction, injection duration, intake pressure, start of combustion timing, fuel-injection pressure, and intake temperature. Ducted fuel injection is shown to curtail engine-out soot emissions at all tested conditions. Under certain conditions, ducted fuel injection can attenuate engine-out soot by over a factor of 100. In addition to producing significantly lower engine-out soot emissions, ducted fuel injection enables the engine to be operated at low-NO[subscript x] conditions that are not feasible with conventional diesel combustion due to high soot emissions. The fourth chapter explores 1.1 bar IMEP[subscript g] (low load) conditions and 10 bar IMEP[subscript g] (higher-load) conditions with the same four-orifice fuel injector as in chapter three. DFI and CDC are directly compared at each operating point in the study. At the idle condition, the intake dilution was swept to elucidate the soot and NO[subscript x] performance of DFI in this new load range. This expands the range of conditions over which DFI has been shown to attenuate soot formation. It also shows that DFI enables low-NO[subscript x], low-load operation that is not achievable with CDC due to excessive soot formation at high dilution levels. The fifth chapter uses a numerical model to develop the understanding of the fluid flow effects of DFI. This enabled studies of entrainment and mixing that would have been much more challenging to do in an experiment. This showed that DFI enhances charge gas entrainment before the duct and blocks entrainment inside of the duct. Mixing is enhanced by the duct, which resulted in lower peak equivalence ratios at the end of the duct.

The emissions must be controlled as stipulated by the society without sacrificing the legendary fuel economy of the diesel engines. These important drivers caused innovations in diesel engineering like re-entrant combustion chambers in the piston, lower swirl support and high pressure injection, in turn reducing the ignition delay and hence the nitric oxides. The limits on emissions are being continually reduced. The- fore, the required accuracy of the models to predict the emissions and efficiency of the engines is high. The phenomenological combustion models based on physical and chemical description of the processes in the engine are practical to describe diesel engine combustion and to carry out parametric studies. This is because the injection process, which can be relatively well predicted, has the dominant effect on mixture formation and subsequent course of combustion. The need for improving these models by incorporating new developments in engine designs is explained in Chapter 2. With “model based control programs” used in the Electronic Control Units of the engines, phenomenological models are assuming more importance now because the detailed CFD based models are too slow to be handled by the Electronic Control Units. Experimental work is necessary to develop the basic understanding of the pr- esses.

The model accounts for the non-isothermal and non-isobaric character of processes during fuel injection resulting from continuous motion of the piston. The effects of various engine operating variables on spray have been studied and graphically presented. The calculated spray penetration with and without crossflow of air has been compared with the available experimental data of other researchers and good agreement between the two is noticed. The model can predict the rate of combustible mixture formation, the rate of heat release and cylinder pressure as a function of time in direct injection (DI) diesel engine. A single cylinder D.I. research diesel engine was operated with N-hexadecane as the engine fuel to validate the mathematical model. However, a leaking head gasket rendered the data unusable, so comparisons between modeled and measured cylinder pressure rise data are not included in this report.

One way of improving exhaust emissions is the application of multiple injection strategies and conventional or partially premixed combustion conditions to a Diesel engine. The application of numerical techniques as CFD supports and improves the quality of engine developments. Unfortunately, current spray and combustion models are not accurate enough to simulate multiple injection systems, being in this way a topic of research. The goal of this study was the development of a novel simulation method for the investigation of Diesel engines operated with multiple injection strategies and different combustion modes. The first part of this work focused in improving the spray modelling. The inform ation of 3D CFD simulations of the injector nozzle was introduced in the spray simulation as boundary conditions developing coupling subroutines for this issue. The atomisation modelling was also improved using validated presumed droplet size distributions. Moreover, to avoid the simulation of the injector nozzle for every investigated operating point, a novel interpolating tool was developed in order to create spray boundary conditions based on few 3D CFD simulations of the nozzle under certain initial and boundary conditions. The second part of this thesis dealt with the combustion modelling of Diesel engines. For this issue, a laminar flamelet approach called Representative Interactive Flamelet model (RIF) was selected and implemented. Afterwards, an extended combustion model based on RIF was developed in order to take into account multiple injection strategies. Finally, this new model was validated with a wide range of operating points: applying multiple injection strategies under conventional and partially premixed combustion conditions.
