Book excerpt: International experts provide a comprehensive picture of the principles, concepts and methods that are applicable to problems originating from the interaction between the living/non-living environment and mankind. Both the analysis of such problems and the way solutions to environmental problems may work in specific societal contexts are addressed. Disciplinary approaches are discussed but there is a focus on multi- and interdisciplinary methods. A large number of practical examples and case studies are presented. There is special emphasis on modelling and integrated assessment. This book is different because it stresses the societal, cultural and historical dimensions of environmental problems. The main objective is to improve the ability to analyse and conceptualise environmental problems in context and to make readers aware of the value and scope of different methods. Ideal as a course text for students, this book will also be of interest to researchers and consultants in the environmental sciences.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Jerome L. Stein Disenchantment with Keynesian econollics developed during the post-1968 period when the rate of growth of output declined, the rate of unemployment rose, and the rate of inflation increased in the U.S. and in other countries. This paradox, called stagflation, was inconsistent with the tenet of Keynesian economics that cyclical movemants in prices and output relative to their respective trends are positively correlated. A search occurred for a more satisfactory theory of macroeconomics which could explain the paradox of stagflation and the observed economic phenomena. The New Classical Economics (NCE) developed as the total rejection of Keynesian economics. The Keynesians claimed that their demand management policies contributed to the obsolescence of the business cycle and successfully eliminated the gap between full employment (potential) output and actusl output. The NCE argued just the opposite: the unemplo~nt rate or growth rate of real output is insensitive to systematic demand management policies [Lucas; Sargent and Wallace].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life. Circular economy (CE) is important towards sustainable development, resources circulation and conservation, involving closing of material loops and cascading used resources, to prevent waste occurrence, and transforming the resulting residual streams into new (secondary) resources. Strategies and legislative framework for waste management are important steps for development of a more CE where resource efficiency becomes the key driver for both economic growth and environmental protections. A few countries achieved good results implementing CE as a replacement of the linear economy. Resource managers and planners should thoroughly identify factors to implement CE for societal benefits. This book presents how resource consumption is minimized with rational use based on 3Rs, legislative framework and government supports towards implementing CE initiatives, example of best practices, future plans and targets in different countries those are helpful for researchers, planners and implementers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a textbook for use in technology teacher training and also a reference book for technology teachers. It will provide a foundation for new teachers entering the area of technology, and also the opportunity for practicing teachers to keep up to date with research informed ideas about teaching technology. Technology in the curriculum has continually faced a range of challenges throughout its history in many counties. Often the basis of the challenges is the result of a lack of understanding about good technology practice. It is hoped that this book can encourage excellent practice in technology teaching and so increase the number of schools positively engaged with technology. The chapter authors are internationally respected and experienced educators who have been able to draw on both their teaching experience and their research in order to discuss a range of aspects of teaching technology. The book has been developed with an international audience in mind. While authors are naturally most familiar with their own country, efforts have been made to generalize from the principles of sound theory and research based practice to maximize applicability to local contexts. John Williams is the Director of the Technology, Environmental, Mathematics and Science Education Research Centre at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. He has worked as a designer and builder, and began his career as a secondary school Manual Arts teacher. He has taught and studied in Australia and the USA, and in a number of African and Indian Ocean countries. He has published and presented widely, and enjoys fishing.
