Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This charming and witty prequel to Cranford is a neglected Gaskell classic with all the period detail, distinctively drawn characters, and a well-knitted plot associated with her works Enjoying the comforts of his well-kept home, country doctor William Harrison is prevailed upon by his longtime friend Charles, a bachelor, to dispense some advice on the "wooing and winning" of women's affections. So begins the fascinating and varied recollections of one of Gaskell's best-loved characters. Lured to rural Duncombe by the promise of a partnership in a country practice, William finds himself trapped in claustrophobic provincial life where society is apparently presided over by the scheming of a set of under-occupied middle-aged women. Their supposed matchmaking prowess in fact leaves much to be desired; so much so, indeed, that before long the hapless young physician finds himself betrothed to three women—none of whom is the beautiful Sophy, the woman he truly desires. Chaotic, hilarious, and poignant, this comedy of manners—and of errors—will resonate with Gaskell aficionados and newcomers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and complex tale of love, poverty, crime, and workers' rights in Manchester during the Industrial Revolution, Gaskell's novel provides an intriguing insight into the lives of workers ground down by long working hours and poor conditions. Helpful footnotes are given when the local dialect becomes too incomprehensible. A socially conscious work, like her subsequent novel, North and South, Mary Barton was highly praised upon publication. Despite being written well over a century ago, it remains as gripping and enjoyable today as it would have been then. This meticulous edition from Heritage Illustrated Publishing is a faithful reproduction of the original text and is beautifully illustrated with a number of atmospheric historical paintings that reflect the mood of the novel.Mary Barton is the first novel by English author Elizabeth Gaskell, published in 1848. The story is set in the English city of Manchester between 1839 and 1842, and deals with the difficulties faced by the Victorian lower class. It is subtitled 'A Tale of Manchester Life'.

Grayling Scientific advances and new technologies are letting others manipulate our minds more easily than ever before. Now, those tasked with protecting our minds are finally preparing to fight back. As we speak, the United Nations is seeking to pin down a concrete right to free thought and enshrine it in international law alongside life, education and protest. But what is thought? And what makes it free? And how can it best be protected? Freethinking explores what an effective right to freedom of thought would look like, and asks how we might build a culture of free thought, and whether that’s even what we want. In an uncertain and rapidly evolving world, Freethinking shows that there are solutions to the forces buffeting our minds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-locates Elizabeth Gaskell’s ‘smaller stories’ in the literary and cultural context of the nineteenth century. While Gaskell is recognised as one of the major novelists of her time, the short stories that make up a large proportion of her published work have not yet received the critical attention they deserve. This study re-claims them as an indispensable part of her literary output that enables us to better contextualize and assess her achievement holistically as a highly-skilled woman of letters. The periodicals in which Gaskell’s shorter pieces were published offer a microcosm of nineteenth-century society, and Gaskell took full advantage of the medium to apply a consistent and barbed challenge to cultural and gendered constructs of roles and social behaviour. Although her eminently readable prose still flows easily in her short stories, it is less likely to elide the sharp corners of domestic violence, the disabling experiences of women, the pain of death and loss, and the complications of family life.
