Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-locates Elizabeth Gaskell’s ‘smaller stories’ in the literary and cultural context of the nineteenth century. While Gaskell is recognised as one of the major novelists of her time, the short stories that make up a large proportion of her published work have not yet received the critical attention they deserve. This study re-claims them as an indispensable part of her literary output that enables us to better contextualize and assess her achievement holistically as a highly-skilled woman of letters. The periodicals in which Gaskell’s shorter pieces were published offer a microcosm of nineteenth-century society, and Gaskell took full advantage of the medium to apply a consistent and barbed challenge to cultural and gendered constructs of roles and social behaviour. Although her eminently readable prose still flows easily in her short stories, it is less likely to elide the sharp corners of domestic violence, the disabling experiences of women, the pain of death and loss, and the complications of family life.

Book excerpt: "This is an engaging and insightful study. Highly polished and well argued, it affords a deeply researched and welcome perspective on Gaskell's short stories as an oblique and creative critique of 19th century society - and of Gaskell as literary stylist." -Felicity James, Associate Professor in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Literature, University of Leicester "For its illuminating close readings of Gaskell's lesser-known short pieces, for its reappraisal of Gaskell as a more passionate and angrier writer than has previously be acknowledged, and for its knowledgeable exposition of her creative and professional processes, not to mention her personal and religious motivations, this is an important contribution to Gaskell studies that will also be of interest to scholars of Victorian publishing, popular fiction, and women's writing." -Helena Ifill, Lecturer in English Studies, School of Language, Literature, Music and Visual Culture, University of Aberdeen This book re-locates Elizabeth Gaskell's 'smaller stories' in the literary and cultural context of the nineteenth century. Book excerpt: The Squire's Story Elizabeth Gaskell The squire's story by Elizabeth Gaskell Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, often referred to as Mrs Gaskell, was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Her first novel, Mary Barton, was published in 1848. Gaskell's The Life of Charlotte Brontë, published in 1857, was the first biography of Brontë. In this biography, she only wrote the moral, sophisticated things in Brontë's life, the rest she left out, deciding that certain, more salacious aspects of her life were better kept hidden. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the Novel. But it is an art in itself. To take a story and distil its essence into fewer pages while keeping character and plot rounded and driven is not an easy task. Many try and many fail. In this series we look at short stories from many of our most accomplished writers. Miniature masterpieces with a lot to say. In this volume we examine some of the short stories of Elizabeth Gaskell. Elizabeth Gaskell is equally well known as Mrs Gaskell. When her mother died, she was three months old and she was sent to live in Knutsford, Cheshire with her Aunt Hannah, this setting would become the basis for her novel Cranford. At 22 she married and settled in Manchester to raise her family. Friends with Charlotte Bronte she went on to write her biography and was also highly regarded by a certain Charles Dickens who published her ghost stories in his magazine. Much of her work views the emerging industrial society of Victorian England through her own moral and religious values and has an uncanny ability to look at and report on the many strata of society. Some of these stories are also available as an audiobook from our sister company Word Of Mouth. Many samples are at our youtube channel http: //www.youtube.com/user/PortablePoetry?feature=mhee The full volume can be purchased from iTunes, Amazon and other digital stores. Among the readers are Richard Mitchley, Eve Karpf & Ghizela Rowe Index Of Stories The Old Nurse's Story The Manchester Marriage The Half Brothers Christmas Storms And Sunshine Hand On Heart Bessy's Troubles At Home Disappearances Right At Last

Book excerpt: When a young nurse is sent to care for a child at a remote and isolated family estate in northern England, she soon becomes consumed by the family's dark and tragic history. This classic ghost story is a masterful example of gothic literature with its vivid imagery and haunting atmosphere. As a young nurse attempts to raise a small child in an eerily lonely house, she begins to unravel the family's unsettling secrets. Every sound is a harbinger of doom as the nurse becomes convinced that a malevolent spirit is lurking in the child's ancestral home. This volume is part of the Mothers of the Macabre series, celebrating the gothic horror masterpieces of pioneering women writers who played a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the genre. First published in 1852, Elizabeth Gaskell skilfully weaves together themes of family, identity, and the supernatural in this timeless horror classic. There's no escape from the haunting grip The Old Nurse's Story will have on your imagination.

Book excerpt: "Well, mother, I've got you a Southport ticket," said Bessy Lee, as she burst into a room where a pale, sick woman lay dressed on the outside of a bed. "Aren't you glad?" asked she, as her mother moved uneasily, but did not speak. "Yes, dear, I'm very thankful to you; but your sudden coming in has made my heart flutter so, I'm ready to choke." Poor Bessy's eyes filled with tears: but, it must be owned, they were tears half of anger. She had taken such pains, ever since the doctor said that Southport was the only thing for her mother, to get her an order from some subscriber to the charity; and she had rushed to her, in the full glow of success, and now her mother seemed more put out by the noise she had made on coming in, than glad to receive the news she had brought. Mrs. Lee took her hand and tried to speak, but, as she said, she was almost choked with the palpitation at her heart.
