Book excerpt: Ambroise Paré (1510–1590) was a French surgeon who specialized in battlefield medicine, especially wound treatment. He was the official royal surgeon for the kings Henry II, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. A humane and dedicated physician, Paré was intensely concerned with the dissemination of knowledge about medicine. He contributed to the development of artificial limbs and also spawned several significant advancements in obstetrics. His medical achievements led Paré to be regarded as the “Father of Modern Surgery.” This edition, published in 1969, is the first English translation of Ten Books of Surgery, and it contains records of many of the most advanced medical practices of the time. Paré describes procedures for the treatment of battle wounds and gangrene, and also deals with ordinary ailments such as bone fractures, contusions, and kidney stones. Paré's work provides valuable insight into an age when the practice of medicine was moved towards the discipline and order of science but was still considerably affected by superstition.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Medicine and Surgery and Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago It will be noted that the manner of presenting the biographies of physi eiaus and surgeons of the past differs from the usual, or formal, style of biography, especially in the leads to the articles. Instead of always giving the place and date of birth in the initial paragraph, followed by a record of the life in chronological order, an attempt has been made to call to the reader's attention at the outset the outstanding features in each career and to limit the record of the life to actual facts. It is hoped that this change will not be unwelcome. The arrangement of the historical sections is in chronological order. The biographies of physicians and surgeons, following those of the surgeons of Fort Dearborn, which appear in the order of their service, are arranged ac cording to the dates of birth. The histories of medical colleges, hospitals and medical societies are printed, in their respective sections, in the order of their organization. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Medicine and Surgery IN presenting this book to the medical profession, and to those laymen interested in the subject, I am quite conscious of the fact that it is a deviation from the usual character of a text-book on medicine or surgery. Instead of dealing with the pathology, diagnosis and treatment of specific diseases or the individualistic practice of medicine, I have endeavored to set forth the reasons for, and the methods of a form of group medicine which has stood the test of years, and proven its practicability in many of the large industries of the country. The conservation of the lives and limbs of the working people and the reclamation of those disabled in the daily strife have become a definite program in the industrial world. The humanizing influence of this work has caused many an employer to consider other means of contributing to the health, comfort and contentment of his working force. Wherever these principles have been adopted, the industry has been rewarded by greater efficiency among its employees, with a corresponding increase in production. With the growth of this form of medicine the field has extended into the living and home conditions of the working forces, gradually resulting in closer co-operation with the public health authorities. In fact, it has become a vital factor in public health. To - day the achievements of industrial medicine and surgery are one of the strongest arguments in favor of a national health program. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orthopedic Surgery and Other Medical Papers Duval, and Little; especially the brochures of M. Guerin, who has been for some time the leading French orthopedist. The writings of M. Guerin may be fairly criticised, both for the wordiness and obscurity of their style and for their unnecessary bulk; but it does not appear that we have any right to question the accuracy of their statements. On the contrary, we may infer from the late report of the committee appointed by the Academy of Medicine to investigate this point, that there is no ground for supposing the evidence in any way warped or misrepresented. His son and daughter that he has reared with loving care may become ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom We trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him when he may need it most. Man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees and do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend a man may have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is the dog. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Medicine and the Medical Profession To attain both the objects thus indicated, by bringing to the notice of his colleagues, the practitioners of medicine, the history of their depart ment and their profession, was the original design of the author in the publication of the present work. For those who are interested solely in literary aims his book was not written, and accordingly he has omitted extended bibliographical notices, preferring to refer the reader for these to the larger manuals on this subject.' His plan has been to consider first the genetic side of the subject, introducing for this purpose a sketch of even prehistoric medicine, and next to set forth the history of the medical pro fession in considerable detail. In both departments he has striven to present the subject in such a manner as should awaken and maintain the interest of the reader. Whether he has failed in his purpose or fallen behind the aims which he had set before him it is not for him to decide. No man is perfect; neither is any book. But in so weighty an undertaking as the publication of a work on general history the author hopes for that indulgence which may be claimed, indeed, by every man who has done his work honestly. According to the measure of his strength, and who seeks to appear no greater than he really is. Of course. For most of the facts recorded in the present work the author is indebted to others. Still he has everywhere preserved the right of inde pendent examination and judgment as to who, among the often conflicting authorities, seems, on the whole, the most reliable. Many things, however, he has proved by reference to the original authorities, and thus made them, as it were, his own. The conception of the history of medicine as a branch of the general history of civilization, a large portion of the history of the profession and his account of the most ancient and most recent develop ments of medical art, he believes he may also justly claim as original. That the book has found so conscientious a collaborator, to whom it is indebted for considerable amplification particularly in the sections on English and American medicine, with which he was, of course, better acquainted than the author - and numerous corrections, is an advantage which no one can better appreciate than the author himself.
