Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Medicine and the Medical Profession To attain both the objects thus indicated, by bringing to the notice of his colleagues, the practitioners of medicine, the history of their depart ment and their profession, was the original design of the author in the publication of the present work. For those who are interested solely in literary aims his book was not written, and accordingly he has omitted extended bibliographical notices, preferring to refer the reader for these to the larger manuals on this subject.' His plan has been to consider first the genetic side of the subject, introducing for this purpose a sketch of even prehistoric medicine, and next to set forth the history of the medical pro fession in considerable detail. In both departments he has striven to present the subject in such a manner as should awaken and maintain the interest of the reader. Whether he has failed in his purpose or fallen behind the aims which he had set before him it is not for him to decide. No man is perfect; neither is any book. But in so weighty an undertaking as the publication of a work on general history the author hopes for that indulgence which may be claimed, indeed, by every man who has done his work honestly. According to the measure of his strength, and who seeks to appear no greater than he really is. Of course. For most of the facts recorded in the present work the author is indebted to others. Still he has everywhere preserved the right of inde pendent examination and judgment as to who, among the often conflicting authorities, seems, on the whole, the most reliable. Many things, however, he has proved by reference to the original authorities, and thus made them, as it were, his own. The conception of the history of medicine as a branch of the general history of civilization, a large portion of the history of the profession and his account of the most ancient and most recent develop ments of medical art, he believes he may also justly claim as original. That the book has found so conscientious a collaborator, to whom it is indebted for considerable amplification particularly in the sections on English and American medicine, with which he was, of course, better acquainted than the author - and numerous corrections, is an advantage which no one can better appreciate than the author himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standard History of the Medical Profession of Philadelphia The object of this work is to describe the evolution of medicine in Philadelphia, from the time of Jan Petersen, the earliest practitioner on record, to the present day. It is, as all history must necessarily be, a description of events and of institutions, and, incidentally, a biograph ical record of those who have been most prominent in both. Estimates of the character of the distinguished men whose names appear on almost every page, and comparisons of institutions, have been sedulously avoided. The facts are left to speak for themselves, the true office of history being, in the words of Lord Bacon, to represent the events themselves and to leave the observations and conclusions them upon to the liberty and faculty of every man's judgment. In dealing with such a multiplicity of names, dates and events, mis takes may have crept in, in spite of the most careful supervision; but, if this be so, it is a consolation to know that many errors of previous writers have been corrected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine, Vol. 1: Comprising a Narrative of Its Progress From the Earliest Ages to the Present Time, and of the Delusions Incidental to Its Advance From Empiricism to the Dignity of a Science The purpose of the following pages is to consider the past history, the present state, and the future prospects of the Medical Profession. To record the names and preserve the memory of those whose great achievements have conferred benefit and lustre on their fellow-men, has in all ages been re garded as a duty, and felt as a gratification to wise and reflecting men but whilst endeavouring to relate the principal events which have contributed to make the medical profession what it now is a high and noble calling - it will also be necessary to speak of the prevailing delusions which have been, and still are, practised by the unprincipled, to tempt the unwise and unwary, making largeness of promise a profitable trade, and sinking the profession in name, though not in deed, to a base and degrading craft. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Heroes of the Art of Medicine Tm; design of this book is to represent the condition of the Art of Medicine and its practitioners at successive periods of history. In the execution of the plan, it has naturally happened that the characters of the men who have directly, or indirectly, exerted the greatest influence in moulding the medical art have been among the chief subjects of research and delineation. Hence the volume has assumed a lighter, more biographical, and probably more popular form, than might perhaps have been expected in a work of this nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Medical Society of the State of New York The modern idea in writing history is to allow the contemporaries to tell their own story as far as possible, making due allowance for prejudice, and presenting as far as is feasible both sides of the equation. The method employed in writing this history of the Medical Society of the State of New York for the centennial of its foundation, has been to use, wherever available, excerpts from contemporary writings. The writer has preferred to take the position of editor of such abstracts rather than to attempt to tell the story directly; for while the interest and the connection of the narrative may suffer somewhat by this method, historical accuracy gains much, and the frequent references to the sources of our knowledge may prove suggestive to students of medical history who care to pursue the subject further. The writer wishes to thank many friends for their aid in preparing this work, notably Dr. A. Jacobi, of New York, and Drs. Albert Vanderveer and Frederick C. Curtis, of Albany. Special thanks for help at doubtful points are due to Mr. John S. Brownne, the librarian of the New York Academy of Medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Medicine: With the Code of Medical Ethics From 1892 to 1897, both years included, I gave to the senior class of the Northwestern University Medical School each year a course of fourteen or fifteen lectures on the history of medicine from the earliest periods of which we have any records, to the end of the nineteenth century of the Christian era. My object was to trace with as much clearness and accuracy as possible the origin and progressive development of the various branches of medical science and practice, and their intimate connection with the progress of all other departments of human knowledge. The following chapters, constituting this book, have been written and revised from the notes used in the lecture room; each chapter representing a lecture in the order in which it was given. I have consented to their publication in a neat, but inexpensive volume, in the hope that they might attract the attention of a large proportion of both students and practitioners of medicine; and thereby diffuse a better knowledge of the origin, progress, and present status of the true science and art of medicine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features In the closing days of 1917 I was asked to give a course of lectures on the history of medicine. This book is the outcome of my attempt to comply with the request made at that time. The course of lectures, given in the first place in the early weeks of 1918, followed the lines of the present table of contents. My auditors were third-year students in one of the American Schools of Medicine, and the plan of presentation was more or less consciously dictated, at the start, by the recollection of what had challenged my curiosity and aroused my attention about the time I had attained a like standing as a student of medicine. Questions and class discussions evoked by the lectures in 1918 and the three subsequent years suggested, however, certain modifications of the initial treatment of the subject and indicated in what directions additions and elucidations were most desirable. Even at the outset I felt sure that the course would be of greater interest to the men if I could trace the development of medicine, however succinctly, from the earliest times till the present day.
