Book excerpt: This book presents new technologies which are available now for the rehabilitation of visual acuity in patients suffering from keratoconusand for arresting the progression of this frustrating disease. All these current treatment options in differing combinations aim to improve the quality of life of the patients and although successful, they are causing confusion for the ophthalmologists; what procedure to do and when? How to perform? Which combination of treatments to choose? Controversies in the Management of Keratoconusprovidesthe widely used treatment options for keratoconus including collagen corneal cross –linking (CXL) covering all the available techniques, intrastromal corneal ring segments (ICRS) , phakic intra-ocular lenses (IOLs), photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) combined or not with CXL penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty ( DALK). Each treatment is addressed by more than one author with different points of view in order to present the various approaches, the logic behind them and the most relevant clinical data available.A chapter by the editor tries to put some light on how to navigate among these controversies. This book will be of interest to trainees as well as the specialized ophthalmologists.

In this study, the author proposes that neutralization is the result of a wellformedness condition that the author calls the Laryngeal Constraint: In languages that have laryngeal neutralization, a laryngeal node is only licensed in a particular syllabic configuration; elsewhere the node will delink to repair the violation of well-formedness. This approach to neutralization is required to correctly explain the typology of laryngeal neutralization. This title will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.

Book excerpt: A textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses in Play; also appropriate as a supplement for Child Development and Early Childhood Education courses. With significantly expanded discussions on key topics, this text ties play directly to child development. Addressing the full spectrum of play-related topics, including age-group chapters, its coverage is quite comprehensive and blends research, theory, and practical applications. Play and Child Development, Fourth Edition, is arranged to guide students through topics leading to a comprehensive understanding of play intended to help prepare them for guiding children's play in a number of contexts: preschools, elementary schools, park systems, and research programs. The text is developmentally-based, providing basic information about historical, theoretical, and practical approaches to promoting development through integrated play and learning approaches across various age or developmental levels. The book analyzes play theories and play therapy; presents a history of play; and discusses current play trends. It explores ways to create safe play environments for all children, and how to weave play into school curricula. Finally, the authors examine the role of adults in leading and encouraging children's natural tendencies toward learning by playing. Special coverage includes a full chapter on play and children with disabilities, and the value of field trips in supporting learning.

Book excerpt: This is one of the most significant military books of the twentieth century. By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War. Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Guderian's book argued, quite clearly, how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of the syntax of external arguments in transitivity alternations from a cross-linguistic perspective. It focuses particularly on the causative/anticausative alternation, which the authors take to be a Voice alternation, and the formation of adjectival participles. The authors use data principally from English, German, and Greek to demonstrate that the presence of anticausative morphology does not have any truth-conditional effects, but that marked anticausatives involve more structure than their unmarked counterparts. This morphology is therefore argued to be associated with a semantically inert Voice head that the authors call 'expletive Voice'. The authors also propose that passive formation is not identical across languages, and that the distinction between target vs. result state participles is crucial in understanding the contribution of Voice in adjectival passives. The book provides the tools required to investigate the morphosyntactic structure of verbs and participles, and to identify the properties of verbal alternations across languages. It will be of interest to theoretical linguists from graduate level upwards, particularly those specializing in morphosyntax and typology.
