Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than a century of debate about the significance of imperial cults for the interpretation of Revelation, this is the first study to examine both the archaeological evidence and the Biblical text in depth. Friesen argues that a detailed analysis of imperial cults as they were practiced in the first century CE in the region where John was active allows us to understand John's criticism of his society's dominant values. He demonstrates the importance of imperial cults for society at the time when Revelation was written, and shows the ways in which John refuted imperial cosmology through his use of vision, myth, and eschatological expectation.

Book excerpt: Highlights the importance of Wales during the intense rivalries of the Houses of Lancaster and York in the Wars of the Roses. This book seeks to explain the importance of Wales in the Wars of the Roses which, the author argues, has never been given the prominence it deserves. From the landing of Richard Duke of York at Denbigh in September 1450 to the death of his youngest son and namesake, Richard III at Bosworth in 1485 Wales and its resources were central to the conflict. Wales and the Marches provided the strength for Richard Duke of York, calling upon the old Mortimer retinue, to challenge the rule of Henry VI, not only in 1450 but again in 1452 and 1455. In opposition to York's presumption, Both Edmund and Jasper Tudor were sent to their homeland in Wales in 1456, initiating 30 years of blood-feud. Welshmen fought at Mortimer's Cross and the Marchmen made Edward IV king and provided the army who fought for him at Towton in 1461. Welshmen also supported Jasper as Earl of Pembroke and through the years that led to the triumph at Bosworth. Henry VII was born at Pembroke, where he was welcomed back in 1485. The book examines the intense rivalry between the Houses of Lancaster and York as they battled for the loyalties of the men of Wales and the Marches. The intense familial rivalry, generational blood feuds and hatred bred the fratricidal violence that led to the Tudor triumph and paved the way for Henry VIII's Acts of Union.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese, one of the oldest active languages, evolved over 5,000 years. As such, it makes for a fascinating case study in the development of language. This cultural history of Chinese demonstrates that the language grew and responded to its music and visual expression in a manner very similar to contemporary English and other Western languages. Within Chinese cultural history lie the answers to numerous questions that have haunted scholars for decades: How does language relate to worldview? What would happen to law after its language loses absolute binding power? How do music, visual, and theatrical images influence literature? By presenting Chinese not as a system of signs but as the history of a community, this study shows how language has expanded the scope of Chinese imagination and offers a glimpse into the future of younger languages throughout the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible prophesies the Queen of the South will rise at the judgment, but did not give her name or any other detail about her. The Queen of the South in Matthew 12:42, authored by Soleilmavis Liu, is a strong and well-reasoned piece that demonstrates who the Queen of the South is, by using plenty of historical facts. It lets readers understand where the Ends of the Earth are, how the Queen of the South will come from the Ends of the Earth and what the judgment is. Ultimately, readers will come to know God's great plan regarding the Queen of the South. However, Satan and his followers will persecute her. Soleilmavis hopes that her presentation sheds new light on this important person, who will play a decisive role in the history. This book is a step in that direction.
