Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the use of a computer system designed to aid the facilities engineer in managing pavement maintenance and repair. The system, called PAVER, consists of a computer data base for storage of relevant pavement information, forms for collecting data, and a set of report-generator programs to retrieve information from the data base in an organized format. Adoption of the system will help the facilities engineer achieve the following benefits: prevention of over- or undermaintenance of pavements, more efficient utilization of funds, more efficient scheduling of maintenance activities, rapid retrieval of pavement information (especially important in determining work requirements for submission to the shop or contractor), and documentation of pavement performance. Procedures are presently being developed to interface PAVER with the Integrated Facilities System (IFS). (Author).

Book excerpt: Statistical prediction models for pavement condition index (PCI) and key distresses have been developed for asphalt and jointed concrete pavements. The models were developed based on field data collected during FY76 through FY78 from 19 airfields throughout the United States. The field data included traffic, climate, pavement structure and material properties, and previous maintenance. Prediction models were developed for concrete and asphalt pavements, respectively. These models represent the first iteration of the consequence models needed to help pavement engineers select the most economical maintenance and repair (M & R) strategies and to help management efficiently allocate repair funds. Two workshops were held to determine information required by Air Force Command and Base engineers to efficiently manage airfield pavement M & R. The workshops were attended by many Command and Base engineers, as well as representatives from the Air Force Design Center and the Directorate of Management Systems. Computer and information requirements were defined and implementation alternatives for a computer-aided pavement management system were developed as a result of these workshops. (Author).

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway administrators; pavement management system (PMS), maintenance, and computer engineers; and technologists involved with data collection and computer programming for the purposes of a PMS. This synthesis describes the state of the practice with respect to pavement management methodologies to select projects and recommend preservation treatments. This report of the Transportation Research Board also describes the predominant pavement management methodologies being used by U.S. state and Canadian provincial transportation agencies; provides a general description of each methodology; and summarizes the requirements, benefits, hindrances, and constraints associated with each. It includes a review of domestic literature and a survey of current practices in North America. In addition, case studies are included to illustrate the use of these methodologies within transportation agencies. Operational and soon-to-be implemented technologies are also discussed, and an extensive bibliography is provided for further reference.

Book excerpt: This pamphlet describes a newly developed pavement maintenance and repair management system designed to help maintenance personnel at an installation achieve the greatest benefit from funds expended. Procedures for the following six basic activities are detailed: dividing the pavement network into sections, inspecting pavement sections, recording pavement information, determining maintenance and repair needs, determining maintenance and repair priorities, and developing work plans. Although the system is designed for paved systems, it can be adapted for unpaved surfaces.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents maintenance and repair (M & R) guidelines and economic analysis procedures for determining optimum repair strategies for a given airfield pavement. The procedures consist of data collection, condition evaluation, identification of feasible M & R alternatives, performing economic analysis, and selection of the optimum M & R alternative. The primary data to be collected are pavement distress types, severities, and amount. This information is then used to compute a pavement condition index (PCI), which is based on a scale of 0 to 100 and measures the pavement structural integrity and surface operational condition. Pavement evaluation is performed through a stepwise procedure which is largely dependent on the PCI and distress data, since they have been found to correlate highly with M & R needs. Other direct measurements, such as profile roughness, hydroplaning potential, and load-carrying capacity, are also included in the evaluation procedure. Guidelines for rational determination of feasible M & R alternatives are presented, based on the results from the pavement evaluation. Included in the guidelines are acceptable alternatives for the localized repair of different distress types at different severity levels. Economic analysis is performed among feasible M & R alternatives, using the present worth method. The optimum alternative is selected based on the results of the economic analysis, mission, and policy.

Book excerpt: This study was in two parts. The first part established and demonstrated a framework for pavement data integration. This is critical for fulfilling QC/QA needs of INDOT¿s pavement management system, because the precision of the physical location references is a prerequisite for the reliable collection and interpretation of pavement data. Such consistency is often jeopardized because the data are collected at different years, and are affected by changes in the vendor, inventory, or referencing system or reference points. This study therefore developed a ¿lining-up¿ methodology to address this issue. The applicability of the developed methodology was demonstrated using 2012-2014 data from Indiana¿s highway network. The results showed that the errors in the unlined up data are significant as they mischaracterize the true pavement condition. This could lead to the reporting of unreliable information of road network condition to the decision makers, ultimately leading to inappropriate condition assessments and prescriptions. Benefits of the methodology reverberate throughout the management functions and processes associated with highway pavements in Indiana, including pavement performance modeling, optimal timing of maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction (MRR), and assessment of the effectiveness of MRR treatments and schedules. The second part of the study developed correlations for the different types of pavement distresses using machine learning algorithms. That way, the severity of any one type of distress can be estimated based on known severity of other distresses at that location. The 2012-2014 data were from I-70, US-41, and US-52, and the distress types considered are cracking, rutting, faulting, and roughness. Models were developed to relate surface roughness (IRI) to pavement cracks, and between the different crack types, with resulting degrees of confidence that varied across the different crack types and road functional classes. In addition, for each functional class and for each crack type, models were built to relate crack depth to crack width. The concept can be applied to other distress types, such as spalling, bleeding, raveling, depression, shoving, stripping, potholes, and joint distresses, when appropriate data are available.

Book excerpt: Comprehensive and practical, Pavement Asset Management provides an essential resource for educators, students and those in public agencies and consultancies who are directly responsible for managing road and airport pavements. The book is comprehensive in the integration of activities that go into having safe and cost-effective pavements using the best technologies and management processes available. This is accomplished in seven major parts, and 42 component chapters, ranging from the evolution of pavement management to date requirements to determining needs and priority programming of rehabilitation and maintenance, followed by structural design and economic analysis, implementation of pavement management systems, basic features of working systems and finally by a part on looking ahead. The most current methodologies and practical applications of managing pavements are described in this one-of-a-kind book. Real world up-to-date examples are provided, as well as an extensive list of references for each part.
