Anster Fair is a comic poem of magic and romance and tells the story of Maggie Lauder, a rich heiress from the Fife coastal town of Anstruther. Maggie is beautiful and the subject of many suitors and admirers. One day she decides its time she found herself a husband but did not know what was the best way to choose. She encounters a Fairy called Puck who suggests she organise a competition at the next market fair, in which all the admirers can display their skills and win her hand. From all over Scotland, suitors arrive, and in the presence of James V and his Royal Court the suitors take part in a range of competitions; a donkey race, a sack race, a piping competition, and a reciting of stories. One popular competitor is Rob the Ranter, a laird from the borders who has his own connection with the world of magic and the infamous Wizard, Michael Scott, and as the story unfolds it is learned that the paths of Maggie and Rob have been laid by Puck and his wife who have both been trapped by the cruel Wizard. In seeking to win their escape they need the help of Maggie and Rob. William Tennent was a Scottish poet and scholar (1784-1848) born in Anstruther East, Fife. It was his knowledge of Italian verse and structure that gave William the ability to compose his first published work, Anster Fair (1812), a mock-heroic, humorous poem with classical aspirations, covering the marriage of Maggie Lauder. It was in the style of ottava rima, a verse form made up of eight lines in iambic pentameter with the rhyme scheme abababcc. This style was the first adopted by a British writer, and it would gain good reviews with six editions appearing in his lifetime. The poem is in the English language using the spelling of the time and with many Scots words included.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anster Fair In "Anster Fair," the author had no other end in view than the creation of pure fun - innocent, aimless enjoyment, as its own end. We have ceased to consider this an unworthy motive, and only ask, is it well done? The poem is unique in English Literature; and though its machinery is familiar enough, yet the structure and treatment are quite original. The sub-plot is kept in admirable proportion, and its evolution so depends on that of the main plot that there is nothing discordant in their relative development. The adjuncts, too, are appropriate and relevant; and the variety and life with which the action is hurried on keep the reader's interest unflagged till the end. Though to some extent cast in a local mould, it is, nevertheless, so perfectly catholic, that it would suffer little depreciation by having its names changed to those of any locality in the Kingdom. That it has hitherto been little known beyond Scotland, is greatly owing to causes referred to in our memoir of the author - his own unobtrusive modesty, and literary isolation; and the luxurious growth of passionate and brilliant poetry in the midst of which it first appeared. Now, however, that the poetic excitement of the first half of the present century has subsided, and that the heavier matter which that ferment kept suspended has sunk to the bottom, this new edition of "Anster Fair" is launched with strong faith in its permanent buoyancy. The text has been carefully collated with all the editions published by the Author, and a few slight grammatical oversights, and slips of measure, are corrected. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on James Hogg, the Scottish poet (1770-1835), going beyond the 'Ettrick Shepherd' stereotype. By focussing on Hogg's poetry (Scottish Pastorals, The Queen's Wake, Jacobite Relics, Queen Hynde, Pilgrims of the Sun) it shows that his work, and the critical response to it, was significantly shaped by the concept of the autodidact: a working-class writer who was considered to be a poet of 'Nature's Making'. The image of the autodidact is pursued from its beginnings - Ramsay's Gentle Shepherd, Macpherson's Ossian, Burns as 'ploughman poet' - through its development in the nineteenth century, to its last gasps in the twentieth. Poets considered include Isobel Pagan, Janet Little, William Tennant, Allan Cunningham, Robert Tannahill, Janet Hamilton, Ellen Johnston, Elizabeth Hartley, Alexander Anderson, David Gray, David Wingate and James Young Geddes. Despite facing difficulties, autodidacts produced some of the most innovative and exciting poetry of the nineteenth century. The author argues that the autodidactic tradition, exemplified by Hogg, nurtured the creative vigour manifested in twentieth-century Scottish poetry. While Scotland's autodidacts shared poetic concerns and techniques, they were characterised, above all, by diversity of poetic voice.
