Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationships between value-added achievement in Tennessee public schools that include grades one through five and selected independent variables. The schools' use of the reading practice and monitoring software known as Accelerated Reader (AR) was of particular interest, as considerable research has suggested its effectiveness in raising achievement in reading and other subjects. Data were (1) the dependent variables, cumulative three-year average (1999, 2000, and 2001) Tennessee Value-Added Assessment scores in reading, language, math, science, and social studies; (2) independent variables school enrollment, per pupil annual expenditure for the system, percentage of students in the school eligible for free or reduced price meals, and percentage of minority students in the school; and (3) whether and to what extent AR had been purchased and implemented at each school since August1, 1999. Four levels of AR ownership/implementation were classified as (1) ownership without any "model classrooms," (2) having one or two model classrooms, (3) having three or more model classrooms, or (4) being certified as a "model school." Multiple regression analysis was used to search for statistically significant relationships between the independent demographic variables and AR use and the dependent variables of value-added achievement at the .05 level of significance, in the hope that a useful model could be designed for predicting value-added achievement from AR use, school enrollment, per pupil expenditure, free or reduced-price meal eligibility, and minority enrollment. Analysis of the data uncovered almost no significant relationships or school-level effects. In no instance was AR implementation a significant factor in relation to value-added achievement at the school level. While no useful regression model was developed from this study, one significant finding was that, in schools ending at grade six, school enrollment and especially minority enrollment are negatively correlated with math achievement.

Book excerpt: This study was developed to determine the interconnectivity between Accelerated Reader and its impact on standardized achievement tests, reading comprehension, motivation to read, and overall reading growth. Historical data from 2017-2018 was taken from fourth-grade students who attended a suburban elementary school in a large public school district. Using a correlational and survey research design, data collected included: end of year Accelerated Reader Student Growth Percentile scores, standardized Reading and Language Arts test scores, growth and performance scores, reading report card grades, and interviews with parents, teachers, and administrators. Limited data revealed that the study was inconclusive. However, the recommendation is that Accelerated Reader should be used as a supplemental source to create student success in reading comprehension and growth.

Book excerpt: The Trials of Evidence-based Education explores the promise, limitations and achievements of evidence-based policy and practice, as the attention of funders moves from a sole focus on attainment outcomes to political concern about character-building and wider educational impacts. Providing a detailed look at the pros, cons and areas for improvement in evidence-based policy and practice, this book includes consideration of the following: What is involved in a robust evaluation for education. The issues in conducting trials and how to assess the trustworthiness of research findings. New methods for the design, conduct, analysis and use of evidence from trials and examining their implications. What policy-makers, head teachers and practitioners can learn from the evidence to inform practice. In this well-structured and thoughtful text, the results and implications of over 20 studies conducted by the authors are combined with a much larger number of studies from their systematic reviews, and the implications are spelled out for the research community, policy-makers, schools wanting to run their own evaluations, and for practitioners using evidence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program, a computerized reading management program marketed by Advantage Learning Systems, Inc., and student's attitudes towards reading while specifically focusing on the difference in attitudes toward reading between low achieving and high achieving students. In addition, this study describes the relationship between reading achievement and the use of the Accelerated Reader Program. This study is quasi-experimental in nature since it does not use a random sample or random assignment to groups. In order to assess student attitudes toward reading, the Heathington Attitude Scale (intermediate version) was employed. The Heathington Attitude Scale is a Likert scale, or summated rating and gives feedback about school-related reading activities such as free reading and organized reading, reading at the library, reading at home, other recreational reading, and general reading. The Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests was used to assess reading achievement. These test, published by Riverside Publishing Company, are standardized achievement of reading from the end of Kindergarten through Grade 12. Each level test consists of two tests: a vocabulary test and a comprehension test. The reading passages include a balance of different genres of writing. Results of the study suggest that there is no significant relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program and student interest toward reading. Likewise, the study showed that the Accelerated Reader program did not have a significant impact on the reading interest of low achieving students when compared to high achieving students. Similarly, the data indicated that there was not a significant relationship between the use of the Accelerated Reader Program and student reading achievement. Finally, recommendations have been presented for further research of the following:the study should be conducted using a larger sample of participants and a comparison of the increase or decrease in student interest in reading during the school year between the students using the Accelerated Reader Program and those who do not.

This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if a difference existed between TCAP scores of students who used the Accelerated Reader (AR) program and students who used Sustained Silent Reading strategy (SSR) as measured by the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). The variables of grade level (6th, 7th, and 8th), gender, and socioeconomic status (free- or reduced- price meals program) were considered. The population consisted of 108 6th graders who attended a Cocke County school or a McMinn County school in Tennessee. Data were obtained from the TCAP for 3 consecutive years beginning in 2004-2005 for students who completed the tests all 3 years. A t test for independent samples and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used to determine if there was a difference on associations and interactions between variables. The researcherâs investigation of the reading achievement of students who used Accelerated Reader and those who used Sustained Silent Reading should assist educators in planning for supplemental reading instruction. The information gathered from this research might be beneficial to other school systems when determining which method of reading instruction to use to increase students' reading achievement. The findings indicated the students who used the Accelerated Reader program had an increase in reading-language arts scale scores for 3 consecutive years. The findings of this study also revealed that gender had no significance on student achievement for 6th graders. The findings did indicate a significant interaction between gender and type of program used during 7th and 8th grades. Females who used the Accelerated Reader program outscored males who used the program. The findings of this study also determined that socioeconomic status had no association with TCAP scores during the 6th, 7th, or 8th grades.

Book excerpt: "In this study, the implementation of Accelerated Reader (AR), a computer-assisted supplemental reading program, was investigated as a research-based instructional strategy to assess whether it aided a high-performing, rural school district in meeting adequate yearly progress goals. The theoretical framework was based on Vygotsky's zone of proximal development. The overall research question for this quasi-experimental, longitudinal study was whether AR impacted students' reading change scores on a standardized test over a 2-year period. Reading achievement data of students in 4 elementary schools were gathered for 2 years. Data consisted of scores from the reading portion of the Measures of Academic Progress achievement test. Seventy-four students from 2 schools participated in AR for 2 years, while the control group -- 72 students from 2 other schools -- did not participate in AR. Data were analyzed using multiple regression, controlling for the effects of gender, special education status, gifted and talented education participation, Title I participation, and English language learner status. Findings showed the AR program had a significant direct impact on vocabulary score changes from 2009 to 2010 but a significant inverse impact on overall reading and vocabulary score changes from 2010 to 2011. Because the district under study is relying on AR to improve student outcomes, the project for this study was an evaluation report including an evaluation of the effectiveness of AR. An action plan was also provided to investigate the level of AR program fidelity to identify possible reasons for this study's unexpected results. Positive social change implications include providing research-based data to school administration to inform curriculum and professional development and improve student outcomes and school performance targets."--Preliminary page.

Two of the four classrooms were traditional classes where paper and pencil methods were those most utilized for instructional purposes. Of these two classrooms, one teacher used Accelerated Reader extensively and with fidelity and the other did not use the program at all. The other two classrooms were part of the district's FLiP initiative where each student had their own laptop. Of these two classrooms, one teacher extensively used Accelerated Reader and one teacher did not. The purpose was to determine if Accelerated Reader should continue to be funded by the district. This would be determined through how extensively teachers used the program, and how using the program translated to student test scores and reading levels."--[portion of abstract].

Book excerpt: Over the past century, reading scores have remained relatively stagnant, and educators have experimented with multiple ways to increase both reading fluency and comprehension (National Center for Home Education, 2002). AR claims to be a program that will do both when used correctly (Renaissance Learning, 2014). This research study adds to the body of literature on solutions to low reading scores. The researcher examined the relationship between continuous use of AR and differences in reading grade equivalent and achievement scores in a rural middle school educating predominantly Caucasian, Title I students in fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
