Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate if employment location, on-campus versus off-campus, impacted student success. Four factors of student success were evaluated: (a) persistence, (b) satisfaction, (c) high-level learning, and (d) personal development. Additionally, employment location and its impact on student success were evaluated for a subpopulation of underrepresented students who self-identified with at least one of the following communities: (a) Black or Latinx, (b) first-generation college, (c) transfer students, (d) LGBTQ, (e) active military or veteran, (f) person with disabilities, and (g) from a low socioeconomic background. Data collected from a survey produced 2,250 responses to be analyzed. All mean scale scores for the student success factors were significantly lower for off-campus student employees than on-campus student employees. Underrepresented student employees reported lower levels of student success than their non-underrepresented peers. Educational leaders should evaluate the benefits of on-campus employment opportunities when making policy and funding decisions related to student employment programs.

The major purpose of this research was to study the impact of student employment on achievement and retention of MSU College of Technology post secondary students in Great Falls. The secondary purpose was to assess the perceptions of MSU College of Technology instructors in regard to employment. Is there conflict between teachers' academic priority and the students' work priorities? The students at MSU College of Technology are changing. The typical student is over 30, female, single and working. The majority of students have responsibilities of work, family and school. The college needs to be proactive in determining and meeting the needs of this new student population. Of the students who are at risk, 16% have considered quitting, 11 % have dropped a class, and 10% are not confident in their success at college. The review of the literature indicated that employment is a determining factor in student retention and academic success. The results of the survey indicate that more than work, motivation and organization are the determining factor in student success. Respondents who worked tended to be more efficient In managing their time and setting priorities. Also, as the number of hours worked increased, GPA tended to increase also. A majority of students are working in related employment that allows them to use the skills acquired at college.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods case study explored the college union’s student employment (CUSE) at an urban regional comprehensive university (RCU). A conceptual framework utilizing Tinto’s (1993) theory of departure, Astin’s (1984) involvement theory, and Rendon’s (1994) validation theory examined the effect of college union student employment on student persistence and success. The study’s first phase consisted of a quantitative analysis examining secondary data of CUSE demographics and performance indicators compared to RCU’s general student aggregate. The study’s second phase consisted of a qualitative analysis of 10 college union student employees’ experiences from working in the college union. What is the demographic makeup of this college union student employee population? How does this college union student employee population demographic compare to the general population at the regional comprehensive university? How do college union student employees compare to the regional comprehensive university’s general student aggregate in measurements of persistence and graduation? How do college union student employee alumni describe their employment as it relates to their institutional connection, persistence, and success? The CUSE population was similar to RCU in gender and race. CUSE provides an example of how diversifying on-campus employment teams can be reflective of the general student aggregate. In the qualitative analysis, identified themes were challenges to earning a degree, a sense of belong, peer connection, and engagement as experienced through the CUSE phenomenon. CUSE alumni affirmed the need to work but also the need to have student connections. On-campus employment is a high-impact practice because of its educational benefits and influence on improving or increasing student retention and engagement (Kuh, 2008). This study's conceptual framework postulated that college union student employment provided an opportunity for CUSE-validating agents to foster a student's engagement in the institution’s social and academic constructs. Validating agents reassure students of their abilities, self-worth, and belonging to the institutional community (Rendon, 1994, 2002). Through its mission, the college union facilitates connections for students while validating its CUSE student employees to support and guide their peers. Finally, the researcher will suggest implications for future practice, research, and the study limitations.

The student employment literature has primarily focused on two themes, which are the impact of work on both academic outcomes (grade point average, graduation and retention rates) and post-graduation labor market success. Although there is an assumption in the literature that on-campus student employment influences leadership learning, there is a lack of research directly exploring this topic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore how on-campus student employment influences leadership capacity. The conceptual framework guiding this research was the culturally relevant leadership learning model with a focus on the development of leadership capacity as the central component for the model. The student leadership competency model was used to define leadership capacity. This research was grounded in a narrative inquiry methodology where participants completed a survey and interview. Nineteen undergraduate students who worked in Student Affairs at my institution of interest in the Southeastern United States participated in this study. The findings suggest that on-campus student employment does influence leadership capacity development for undergraduate students who work. Therefore, results from this study can be used to inform and adapt current on-campus practices associated with student employment to facilitate the development of leadership capacity in on-campus working students.
