Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Draws together information from diverse sources to illuminate an important chapter in the history of American science Sorensen asks how it came about that, within the span of forty years, the American entomological community developed from a few gentlemen naturalists with primary links to Europe to a thriving scientific community exercising world leadership in entomological science. He investigates the relationship between American and European entomology, the background of American entomologists, the implications of entomological theory, and the specific links between 19th-century American society and the rapid institutional growth and advances in theoretical and applied entomology. By the 1880s the entomologists constituted the largest single group of American zoologists and the largest group of ecologists in the world. While rooted in the British natural history tradition, these individuals developed a distinctive American style of entomological investigation. Inspired by the concept of the balance of nature, they excelled in field investigations of North American insects with special emphasis on insect pests that threatened crop production in a market-oriented agriculture. During this period, entomologists described over ten times as many North American insect species as had been previously named, and they consolidated their findings in definitive collections. Employing evolutionary theory, they contributed to the growing understanding of insect migration, mimicry, seasonal dimorphism, and the symbiotic relationship of plant and animal species. Americans also led in the revision of insect taxonomy according to the new principles. Their employment of entomological findings in the practical control of agricultural pests set new standards worldwide. Initially ridiculed as eccentric bug hunters, American entomologists eventually achieved stature as agricultural advisers and as investigators into the origin and nature of life. Based primarily on the correspondence of American entomologists, Brethren of the Net draws together information from diverse sources to illuminate an important chapter in the history of American science.

Book excerpt: A New York Times 2018 Holiday Gift Selection Honey bees get all the press, but the fascinating story of North America’s native bees—an endangered species essential to our ecosystems and food supplies—is just as crucial. Through interviews with farmers, gardeners, scientists, and bee experts, Our Native Bees explores the importance of native bees and focuses on why they play a key role in gardening and agriculture. The people and stories are compelling: Paige Embry goes on a bee hunt with the world expert on the likely extinct Franklin’s bumble bee, raises blue orchard bees in her refrigerator, and learns about an organization that turns the out-of-play areas in golf courses into pollinator habitats. Our Native Bees is a fascinating, must-read for fans of natural history and science and anyone curious about bees.

This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Eugene Lutz became an entomologist at a time when this science was still new. He was one of the first to set up experiments in the study of heredity using the common fruit fly. In his many field trips he observed unusual insects in their natural habitats and brought back thousands of valuable specimens. As curator of the Department of Entomology at the American Museum of Natural History, he was responsible for innovations in labeling and museum display. His observations of more than one thousand species found in his own back yard were the basis for his classic book, Lots of Insects. He set up the first nature trail in America; devising museum exhibits in natural outdoor settings. This first biography of one of the great American entomologists is filled with all the excitement that is to be found in the strange and infinite world of insects. Here is the fascinating story of Dr. Lutz’s career along with a series of natured projects you can do at home that will help you observe insect behavior for yourself. Projects include: Bringing Insects to You, The Hows of Collecting, and Preserving and Mounting. While we already know much about insect life, much, much more remains to be learned. Even the amateur entomologist can make a contribution to science through their own research!

They take on all hues, shapes, and sizes, from the iridescent green of the Western Cedar Borer to the striking red of the Rose Curculio. They can also be found in a wide range of habitats, from cold mountain streams to scorching deserts. Similar to its eastern counterpart, Beetles of Eastern North America, this book is a comprehensive guide to the beetles of the US and Canada that can be found west of the Continental Divide. It covers over 1,400 species across 130 different families. The book begins with a general introduction to beetles, with sections on morphology, behavior and natural history, and conservation, as well as information on how to find and photograph beetles. After the introduction, there is an illustrated key to common beetle families. The family descriptions include information on natural history, collection, identification, common genera and species, and similar families"--
