Book excerpt: The book is organized into three parts, each one building on the material of the previous sections. Part I (Chapters 1-8) covers the basic principles to lay sound foundations for the following parts of the book. It emphasizes classic processing techniques, especially the fast Fourier transform (FFT), and microwave engineering issues, antennas, and hardware. The second part of the book deals with the theory and techniques specific to pulse Doppler radar. This is subdivided into Part IIA (Chapters 9-10), which covers high PRF pulse Doppler, and Part IIB (Chapters 11-15), which covers medium PRF pulse Doppler. A major theme is that of PRF selection and optimization, other waveform design issues, and the problem of ghosting. While high and medium PRF pulse Doppler techniques have become synonymous with airborne fire control radars, they are used over a broad spectrum of airborne and surface-based radar applications. Part II does emphasize the airborne radar case, but it does not neglect the surface-based radar. Finally, Part III (Chapters 16-19) presents a series of four case studies. Each of these case studies applies the material of Part II whilst also highlighting additional radar techniques (and, in some cases, non-radar considerations) specific to the application. Such is the prevalence of pulse Doppler radars today; the number of case studies that could have been considered is well into double figures. However, the four presented here suffice to illustrate the wide variety of pulse Doppler radar applications.

Book excerpt: High resolution windspeed profile measurements are needed to provide reliable detection of hazardous low altitude windshear with an airborne pulse Doppler radar. The system phase noise in a Doppler weather radar may degrade the spectrum moment estimation quality and the clutter cancellation capability which are important in windshear detection. Also the bias due to weather return Doppler spectrum skewness may cause large errors in pulse pair spectral parameter estimates. These effects are analyzed for the improvement of an airborne Doppler weather radar signal processing design. A method is presented for the direct measurement of windspeed gradient using low pulse repetition frequency (PRF) radar. This spatial gradient is essential in obtaining the windshear hazard index. As an alternative, the modified Prony method is suggested as a spectrum mode estimator for both the clutter and weather signal. Estimation of Doppler spectrum modes may provide the desired windshear hazard information without the need of any preliminary processing requirement such as clutter filtering. The results obtained by processing a NASA simulation model output support consideration of mode identification as one component of a windshear detection algorithm. Book excerpt: A description is provided of the Airborne Windshear Doppler Radar Simulation (AWDRS) program developed for NASA-Langley by the Research Triangle Institute. The radar simulation program is a comprehensive calculation of the signal characteristics and expected outputs of an airborne coherent pulsed Doppler radar system viewing a low level microburst along or near the approach path of the aircraft. The detailed nature of the simulation permits the quick evaluation of proposed trade-offs in radar system parameters and the evaluation of the performance of proposed configurations in various microburst/clutter environments. The simulation also provides a test bed for various proposed signal processing techniques for minimizing the effects of noise, phase jitter, and ground clutter and maximizing the useful information derived for avoidance of microburst windshear by aircraft. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource covers basic concepts and modeling examples for the three “pillars” of EW: Electronic Attack (EA) systems, Electronic Protection (EP) techniques, and Electronic Support (ES). It develops techniques for the modeling and simulation (M&S) of modern radar and electronic warfare (EW) systems and reviews radar principles, including the radar equation. M&S techniques are introduced, and example models developed in MATLAB and Simulink are presented and discussed in detail. These individual models are combined to create a full end-to-end engineering engagement simulation between a pulse-Doppler radar and a target. The radar-target engagement model is extended to include jamming models and is used to illustrate the interaction between radar and jamming signals and the impact on radar detection and tracking. In addition, several classic EA techniques are introduced and modeled, and the effects on radar performance are explored. This book is a valuable resource for engineers, scientists, and managers who are involved in the design, development, or testing of radar and EW systems. It provides a comprehensive overview of the M&S techniques that are used in these systems, and the book's many examples and case studies provide a solid foundation for understanding how these techniques can be applied in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent pulse train processing is most commonly used in airborne pulse Doppler radar, achieving adequate transmitter/receiver isolation and excellent resolution properties while inherently inducing ambiguities in Doppler and range. First introduced by Palermo in 1962 using two conjugate LFM pulses, the primary nonlinear suppression objective involves reducing range ambiguity, given the waveform is nominally unambiguous in Doppler, by using interpulse and intrapulse coding (pulse compression) to discriminate received ambiguous pulse responses. By introducing a nonlinear operation on compressed (undesired) pulse responses within individual channels, ambiguous energy levels are reduced in channel outputs. This research expands the NLS concept using discrete coding and processing. A general theory is developed showing how NLS accomplishes ambiguity surface volume removal without requiring orthogonal coding. Useful NLS code sets are generated using combinatorial, simulated annealing optimization techniques - a general algorithm is developed to extended family size, code length, and number of phases (polyphase coding). An adaptive reserved code thresholding scheme is introduced to efficiently and effectively track the matched filter response of a target field over a wide dynamic range, such as normally experienced in airborne radar systems. An evaluation model for characterizing NLS clutter suppression performance is developed - NLS performance is characterized using measured clutter data with analysis indicating the proposed technique performs relatively well even when large clutter cells exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical geometric optics estimates of the echo characteristics from both isotropic and directed acoustic shocks are presented together with the detection capability of a typical sensitive pulse Doppler radar (AFCRL Porcupine Doppler) in order to determine the feasibility of detecting large well defined boundaries of refractive index. Both the radar cross-section and the Doppler spectrum of an acoustic shock are sensitive to wind and temperature induced perturbations of the shock surface. For standard deviations in wind and temperature of 0.5 m/sec and 1C, the theoretical values of the maximum radar cross-section and minimum Doppler spectral width of a typical directed shock of 50 meters radius are found to be 0.0008 sq cm and 58 cps respectively. This target cross-section is about 6 dB stronger than the minimum cross-section detectable by the Porcupine radar at a range of only 1.8 kilometers. At this range, the presence of a weak signal may be completely masked by the presence of strong ground clutter signals. Signal processing techniques which improve the mean square to noise ratio and provide sub-clutter visibility are therefore crucial to the success of the experiment. Moreover, the sensitivity of the radar cross-section and the Doppler spectrum to wind and temperature perturbations restricts the experiments to calm conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Design concepts and test results are summarized for a Doppler weather radar system suitable for precipitation measurements over a wide span of radial velocities and slant ranges, even in the presence of ground clutter. The radar transmits two uniform pulse trains at 2.710 and 2.760 GHz. Uniformly spaced pulses permit ground clutter cancellation of up to 50 dB to be achieved with a three-pole elliptic filter. Pulse spacing at one frequency is consistent with long-range coverage in reflectivity, while spacing of the second is consistent with a wide unambiguous velocity measurement span.

Book excerpt: The authors extensive work in Doppler radar theoryspecifically his development of an exact theory for the spectrum of an airborne Doppler radaris thoroughly presented in this important book. Much of the material presented has not previously appeared in print, and anyone involved in Doppler theory and applications, airborne Doppler radar, or aircraft stabilization and navigation will find this book invaluable. The book begins with a basic discussion of the Doppler effect and its various applications, and how Doppler radar can be used for the stabilization and navigation of aircraft. A quasi-static approximation of the Doppler spectrum is presented along with illustrations and discussions to help the reader gain an intuitive understanding of the approximation and its limitations. A summary of the mathematical concepts required for development of an exact theory is then presented using the case of a narrow beam antenna. This is followed by the development of the exact theory for the general case, which is graphically illustrated and compared with the quasi-static approximation. General conditions for which the quasi-static approximation error would be excessivespecifically as applied to laser Doppler radars and low-flying aircraftare presented. Software, in the form of an executable MATLAB program which can be used to determine the Doppler spectrum parameters for any antenna pattern and any terrain backscattering, is included.
