Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: International Organisations, grade: 1,3, King s College London, course: The Business Environment in the Asia-Pacific, 15 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This book analyses and evaluates the question, in how far the creation of the Asian Free Trade Area (AFTA) brought economic benefits to the ASEAN country Vietnam. To evaluate this question the impacts of AFTA on Vietnam's trade and their foreign direct investment (FDI) are evaluated and in a further step the question analysed in how far AFTA can affect the government income revenues of Vietnam. For the analysis of AFTA's impact on Vietnams' trade, the trade structure of Vietnam will be analysed. In general it can be said that for Vietnam the accession to AFTA is a very important step in their transition process to a more market economy. Furthermore it is a major step in Vietnams' integration in the world economy. Especially the access of Vietnamese firms to a huge market such as ASEAN seems to be very advantageous. In the case of foreign direct investments, the question is if AFTA is seen by foreign firms and investors as a positive factor which would lead to investments in Vietnam or if it does not change the situation or if it has even a negative impact on the FDI due to the reason that the industries are not protected anymore by the tariffs and quotas. A further question to analyse is the origin of the FDI, this means if the major part comes from the ASEAN countries or if it has also any effects on other countries. This book primarily targets researchers and readers interested in organisations and the Vietnamese economy.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the East and South East Asian region has witnessed a rapid expansion of regional economic cooperation through bilateral and plurilateral free trade agreements. The current book attempts to comprehensively analyze the economic and environmental impacts of regional economic integration in East and South East Asia to the year 2020. This region has some of the fastest growing economies of the world. A global economic model was used to undertake the analysis. A rare feature of the book is the detailed environmental implications of the Regional Trade Agreements focusing on air, water, and waste pollution. Economic integration among the East and South East Asian region has been an important agenda item for the academic and policy communities in recent years. The study provides insight into pursuing a concrete multilateral trade liberalization policy (combining ASEAN and other countries in East Asia) and throws more light on the on-going trade and environment debate. This book will be a good addition to the field of trade and the environment. The academic community – primarily researchers and policy makers, and world bodies, such as the WTO, ADB and the World Bank, will benefit from the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986, the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) adopted the Doi Moi (Renovation) policy at its sixth national congress, opening up a new chapter in the country’s modern history. Under Doi Moi, Vietnam has undergone significant socio-economic, political and foreign policy reforms that have transformed the country in many meaningful ways. This edited volume aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the multiple aspects and transformations of Vietnam’s foreign policy over the past thirty years. The book is divided into three sections. The first covers the broader framework of Vietnam’s foreign policymaking and the historical evolution of Vietnam’s diplomacy under Doi Moi. The second examines Vietnam’s bilateral relationships with its major partners, namely the United States, China, Japan, India, Russia, its smaller neighbours (Cambodia and Laos), and ASEAN. Finally, the book looks into two major issues in Vietnam’s current foreign policy: the management of the South China Sea disputes and the international economic integration process. As the most informative, updated and comprehensive volume on Vietnam’s foreign policy under Doi Moi, the book is a useful reference source for academics, policymakers, students as well as anyone interested in contemporary Vietnam in general and its foreign policy in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, ASEAN has shifted its focus from political and military security to economic co-operation and development. Although this change may ease the integration of the four mainland Southeast Asian nations -- Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia into ASEAN, there remain significant challenges to forge a workable and united ten-member ASEAN. This book examines many of the economic, political, and institutional issues confronting the enlarged regional grouping. The volume is organized into three sections based on the perspectives of the region, subregion, and the newer members. It not only addresses ASEAN's enlargement but also contributes to the debate on ASEAN's shifting role in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Agricultural markets have entered a long-term process of liberalization, with the aim of reducing imposed market imperfections such as monopolistic public trade, entry barriers and subsidies. The experience of more than a decade of agriculture liberalization offers a good opportunity to review and analyze the outcome of this process and to draw lessons for the future. The central topic in Agricultural Markets Beyond Liberalization is the relationship between market structure and how markets perform in a dynamic context during a liberalization process. The topic is studied from both a micro and macro viewpoint and refers to different types of agricultural markets. This volume brings together the dynamics of agricultural markets in several parts of the world, with a special focus on transition economics and Africa. The different studies cover geographical areas as wide as a district as well as a group of countries, and institutions from individual contracts to multi-national organizations. The analysis of liberalization under different circumstances, and the different methods of analysis used by the authors provide a valuable foundation for the assessment of liberalization.

Book excerpt: Globalization is a multi-dimensional concept reflecting the increased economic, social, cultural, and political integration of countries. There has been no pinpointed consensus on the history of globalization; however, the globalization process has gained significant speed as of the 1980s in combination with liberalization. Many countries have removed or loosened barriers over the international flows of goods, services, and production factors. In this context, both liberalization and globalization have led to considerable institutional, economic, social, cultural, and political changes in the world. The liberalization and globalization processes have affected economic units, institutions, cultures, social lives, and national and international politics. The Handbook of Research on Institutional, Economic, and Social Impacts of Globalization and Liberalization provides a comprehensive evaluation of the institutional, economic, and social impacts of globalization and liberalization processes across the world. While highlighting topics like economics, finance, business, and public administration, this book is ideally intended for government officials, policymakers, practitioners, stakeholders, researchers, and academicians interested in the international impacts of globalization and liberalization across a variety of different domains.

This collection of outstanding essays explores the importance of regionalization and globalization to the world economy. International contributions explore the process of regionalization in the Pacific Area, The Americas, Africa and Europe, and question whether the world economy is characterized by increasing regionalization, rather than globalization. The book is an excellent contribution to debate on development economics. It investigates how the processes of globalization and regionalization, driven by liberalization of trade and capital markets, weaken nationally established monopolies and protected industries and it looks at the challenge to Third World nations and the countries of the former socialist bloc.
