Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), a nonprofit, public foundation, was established in 1978 to advance the sciences of nutrition, toxicology, and food safety. ILSI promotes the resolution of health and safety issues in these areas by sponsoring research, conferences, publications, and educational programs. Through ILSI's programs, scientists from government, academia, and industry unite their efforts to resolve issues of critical importance to the public. As part of its commitment to understanding and resolving health and safety issues, ILSI is pleased to sponsor this series of monographs that consolidates new scientific knowledge, defines research needs, and provides a background for the effective application of scientific advances in toxicology and food safety. Book excerpt: An inhalation exposure facility was developed, tested, and operated to expose rodents to a fog oil obscurant. The criteria considered in establishing the facility were: adequate chamber and exposure facility ventilation, control of chamber temperature, aerosol generation and control, aerosol monitoring, aerosol homogeneity, and aerosol removal. Conditioned air was supplied to the laboratory area through volume dampers controlled by thermostats providing individual air conditioning for each room. Room air was filtered before entering the chambers. Chamber temperature was monitored using a thermocouple and digital display thermometer and a control circuit provided chilled water to the chamber inlet air coil if the temperature was higher than desired. A manually adjusted blower pushed air through the inlet air coil, particulate and gas filters, and into a two-path generator/bypass loop.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive handbook provides up-to-date knowledge and practical advice from established authorities in aerosol science. It covers the principles and practices of bioaerosol sampling, descriptions and comparisons of bioaerosol samplers, calibration methods, and assay techniques, with an emphasis on practicalities, such as which sampler to use and where it should be placed. The text also offers critiques concerning handling the samples to provide representative and meaningful assays for their viability, infectivity, and allergenicity. A wide range of microbes-viz., viruses, bacteria, fungi and pollens, and their fragments-are considered from such perspectives. Bioaerosols Handbook is divided into four parts, providing a wide-ranging reference work, as well as a practical guide on how best to sample and assay bioaerosols using current technology.

Book excerpt: Aerosols and the Lung covers all aspects of aerosols and the lung, including the use of aerosol in clinical medicine. This volume was developed from the editors' longstanding interest in lung defenses coupled with the radioaerosol technique of assessing their efficiency. This book is organized into 11 chapters. The coverage of these chapters include the physical properties of aerosol required to evaluate their inhalation into the lung, production of aerosol that is suitable for inhalation, determination of aerosol deposition in the lungs and the assessment of lung clearance. This book also highlights the importance of radioaerosols in estimating airway calibre, in detecting airway disease and in ventilation imaging. This book will be of interest to medical students and professionals, particularly those dealing with studies of the human lungs and aerosols.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inhalation exposure generation and monitoring system was develop and tested for exposing laboratory rats to: (1) solid particulate aerosols, (2) solid-liquid aerosol mixtures, (3) Cristobalite aerosol (positive control) and (4) filtered air (normal control). The test facility consisted of two laboratories: one with five 1 cu.m. inhalation chambers used for exposures to test aerosols, and the second with two chambers for exposure of control rats to filtered air. The aerosol exposure chambers were interfaced with two types of aerosol generators: one for the solid particulate aerosols, with liquid aerosols and with solid-liquid aerosol mixtures. Particle size distribution was measured by a Quartz Crystal Microbalance-based cascade impactor. Selected filter samples were analyzed by HPLC to show that neither the aerosol generation process, nor the mixing of solid particulate and PBL aerosols produced any degradation of PBL. Spatial and temporal homogeneity of aerosol concentration and particle size within the chambers were established through a procedure of simultaneous sampling. Statistical analysis of the data demonstrated that the total variation in aerosol concentrations was within the + or - 20% limits set for the study at all concentration levels tested. (jes).
