Book excerpt: Looking across time and the globe, a critical history of sexual violence—what causes it and how we overcome it. Disgrace is the first truly global history of sexual violence. The book explores how sexual violence varies widely across time and place, from nineteenth-century peasant women in Ireland who were abducted as a way of forcing marriage, to date-raped high-school students in twentieth-century America, and from girls and women violated by Russian soldiers in 1945 to Dalit women raped by men of higher castes today. It delves into the factors that facilitate violence—including institutions, ideologies, and practices—but also gives voice to survivors and activists, drawing inspiration from their struggles. Ultimately, Joanna Bourke intends to forge a transnational feminism that will promote a more harmonious, equal, and rape- and violence-free world.

Book excerpt: First published in 1975, Disgrace and Favour is a novel of life on the Border in the dying years of Elizabeth I's reign and of intrigue and immorality at the court of King James. It is the story of the Queen's cousin, Sir Robert Carey, who was disgraced for marrying without her consent, of his struggle to restore his fortunes under her successor, and his realisation that favour among the hazards of a decadent court was even less appealing than a hard but untrammelled life in exile on the Border. It is the story, too, of the hanging of Geordie Bourne; of the life and death of Prince Henry, most gifted of the Stuarts; of Robert Carr, the royal favourite who became the only first minister of a British monarch to be convicted of murder; of Frances Howard, the beauty of the age and twice a countess, on the state of whose maidenhead depended the government of the country; of the mysterious poisoning of Sir Thomas Overbury in the Tower of London, and the meteoric career of George Villiers. Many of the other rich and bizarre characters of the age make an appearance in these pages. They are headed by the awesome Queen who terrorised her courtiers and the far from majestic king who united Scotland and England and proclaimed himself God's Vice-regent on earth but displayed a strange variety of human weaknesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Gettysburg was a scene of roiling chaos. Thousands of casualties and an unexpected Union retreat left the field and its soldiers in utter confusion. It was in the midst of this uproar that Brigadier General Thomas A. Rowley, U.S.A., was arrested for drunkenness and disobedience. But what really happened on that chaotic day, and how did it affect Rowley and those around him in the years to come? A military man for many years, Rowley had served during the Mexican War and had worked his way up from second lieutenant to colonel. When the fighting began at Fort Sumter, he immediately offered his services to the Union Army. This volume chronicles Rowley's life up to the July 1, 1863, battle that ended his military career, with particular attention to the events of that fateful day. The author discusses the court martial's questionable guilty verdict and Rowley's reaction to it, as well as his role in a confrontation between Major General George Meade and G.K. Warren shortly after Lincoln and Stanton reversed the court martial's finding. Subsequent events in the careers of other participants including Lieutenant Colonel Rufus Dawes and Major General Abner Doubleday are also discussed. Sources include personal letters and diaries of the men who served with and under General Rowley. Pertinent information regarding the military rules of the period is provided in order to reveal how Rowley's case deviated from the norm. Finally, appendices provide a list of Rowley's commands, a roll of the court martial participants and Rowley's personal defense statement.

Book excerpt: Former President of the Republic of Haiti, former Commander-in-Chief of the Haitian Army, former scholar at at the US Marine Corps Schools (Quantico, VA), and the United States Naval Intelligence School (Anacostia, VA), qualified in law, career officer during 30 years which coincided with a deeply tormented period of national history, Prosper Avril brings the opinions of a privileged witness, a meticulous observer, an inquisitive researchist, and a leading actor to the debate about a subject that concerns all Haitians and creates much interest with foreign researchers, historians and observers -- the recent dismantling of the Haitian Army. From Glory to Disgrace: The Haitian Army - 1804, 1994 is an in depth study of the Haitian military institution, the oldest of Haiti, not viewed as a disjointed member of the Haitian social body, but rather as an integral part of a society which is in constant change. By undertaking this work, the author proposes answers to two fundamental questions: does the Haitian Army deserve the fate of its radical and final dissolution? is the future of Haiti secure without an army dedicated to the defense of the integrity of its national territory? By the wealth of its documentation and its close analysis of the events in which the Haitian Army has been involved, this book will certainly help the Haitian or foreign reader make a reasoned and impartial judgment about this important matter. In this work, the author maintains a commitment to one noble ambition -- to begin a patriotic and objective debate on one of the most controversial issues for Haiti today.

Book excerpt: From going AWOL to collaborating with communists, assaulting fellow servicemen to marrying without permission, military crime during the Cold War offers a telling glimpse into a military undergoing a demographic and legal transformation. The post-World War II American military, newly permanent, populated by draftees as well as volunteers, and asked to fight communism around the world, was also the subject of a major criminal justice reform. By examining the Cold War court-martial, Defending America opens a new window on conflicts that divided America at the time, such as the competing demands of work and family and the tension between individual rights and social conformity. Using military justice records, Elizabeth Lutes Hillman demonstrates the criminal consequences of the military's violent mission, ideological goals, fear of homosexuality, and attitude toward racial, gender, and class difference. The records also show that only the most inept, unfortunate, and impolitic of misbehaving service members were likely to be prosecuted. Young, poor, low-ranking, and nonwhite servicemen bore a disproportionate burden in the military's enforcement of crime, and gay men and lesbians paid the price for the armed forces' official hostility toward homosexuality. While the U.S. military fought to defend the Constitution, the Cold War court-martial punished those who wavered from accepted political convictions, sexual behavior, and social conventions, threatening the very rights of due process and free expression the Constitution promised.
