Book excerpt: This book is volume 1 of a 4 volume series, the first 3 of which have been published by Xlibris and the 4th almost complete for imminent delivery. In its entirety this work is the most comprehensive and accurate account of Australian Classical Music making ever undertaken. The 4 volumes cover the period from 1901-2012 and include more than 800 composers, famous and obscure, with more than 30,000 compositions including details of their premieres (where, when and by whom). Individual performers, ensembles, orchestras, opera and ballet companies, music educators, instrument makers, entrepreneurs, academics, philanthropists, musicologists and critics are included as part of the story. The foundation and demise of music institutions, venues and festivals is recorded chronologically. Altogether an extensive picture of Australian Classical Music production and performance can be gleaned in any given year. This book is distinct insofar as it can be read conventionally (from cover to cover): or one may choose a composer/performer and follow his/her career year by year; or one may open the book at random and delight in the unusual and esoteric information therein. This book, and its companion volumes are valuable and indispensible works for the serious music student, professional musician, performing amateur, cultural aficionado and inquisitive lay person and should be in the library of every reputable music conservatorium worldwide.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No chronological history of music can be complete. Even an extensive biography of a single composer will have details missing, withheld, or unavailable; scores undated, works lost or destroyed, personal and educational experiences forgotten or overlooked, and memoirs selective. When one deals with hundreds of composers, these same problems are multiplied manifold. A Chronological History Of Australian Composers And Their Compositions by Stephen Pleskun, is the first of a three-volume series that puts into historical perspective the works and experiences of generations of composers and their compatriots. It attempts to recount the history of classical music in Australia from the time it was proclaimed a Commonwealth (1901). The author s purpose is to reveal in as much detail as possible the classical music making activities of those involved in any given year. Pleskun focuses on composers and their compositions, the bulk of which is covered in A Chronological History Of Australian Composers And Their Compositions. However, composers do not exist in isolation, nor do they compose works purely for self-gratification. Thus, Pleskun has included in their stories the performers, educators, entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and administrators who have played crucial parts in bringing aural visions to life and hence are an indispensable part of the music scene.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s Jindyworobak Composers examines the music of a historically and artistically significant group of Australian composers active during the later post-colonial period (1930s–c. 1960). These composers sought to establish a uniquely Australian identity through the evocation of the country’s landscape and environment, including notably the use of Aboriginal elements or imagery in their music, texts, dramatic scenarios or ‘programmes’. Nevertheless, it must be observed that this word was originally adopted as a manifesto for an Australian literary movement, and was, for the most part, only retrospectively applied by commentators (rather than the composers themselves) to art music that was seen to share similar aesthetic aims. Chapter One demonstrates to what extent a meaningful relationship may or may not be discernible between the artistic tenets of Jindyworobak writers and apparently likeminded composers. In doing so, it establishes the context for a full exploration of the music of Australian composers to whom ‘Jindyworobak’ has come to be popularly applied. The following chapters explore the music of composers writing within the Jindyworobak period itself and, finally, the later twentieth-century afterlife of Jindyworobakism. This will be of particular interest to scholars and researchers of Ethnomusicology, Australian Music and Music History.

This collection of essays balances narratives of struggle, artistic prowess, and of "breaking through" the obstacles in the profession. Part I: Creative Work – Then and Now illuminates historical and present-day women’s composition and various iterations and conceptions of the “feminine voice”; Part II: The State of the Industry in the Present Day provides solutions from the frontline to sector inequities; and Part III: Creating; Collaborating: Composer and Performer Reflections offers personal stories of current creation in music. A Century of Composition by Women: Music Against the Odds draws together topical issues in feminist musicology over the past century. This volume provides insight into the professional and compositional procedures of creative women in music and stands to be relevant for composers, performers, industry professionals, students, and feminist and musicological scholars for many years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the western classical tradition, composers have influenced and been influenced by their students and teachers. Many musicians frequently add to their personal acclaim by naming their teachers and the lineage through which they were taught. Until now, the relationships between composers have remained uncataloged and understudied, but with enough research, it is possible to document entire schools of composition. Composer Genealogies: A Compendium of Composers, Their Teachers, and Their Students is the first volume to gather the genealogies of more than seventeen thousand classical composers in a single volume. Functioning as its own fully cross-referenced index, this volume lists composers and their dates, followed by their teachers and notable students. A short introduction presents the parameters by which composers were selected and provides a survey of the literature available for further study. Gathering records and information from reference books, university websites, obituaries, articles, composers’ websites, and even direct contact with some composers, Pfitzinger creates a valuable resource for music researchers, composers, and performers.
