Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genesis is the first book of the Bible, and in many ways, offers us the Bible in miniature. It is a book of beginnings, indeed it's original title in the ancient Hebrew was "Bere-Shith" - which translates "In the beginning," which are the first words of the book. Parenthetically, that is the way many books in the Bible were originally named. In both Jewish and Christian circles, Genesis is believed to have been written by Moses, who also is also believed to be the author of the next four books of the Bible. Those five books, known as The Pentateuch, (which means, "the five") are believed to have been written during the forty years when the Jews wandered in the wilderness, following the exodus from Egypt. It should be pointed out, however, that Genesis is made up of many stories of a traditional nature which may date back hundreds of years before Moses' time. It might be more accurate to say that Moses was the compiler of Genesis, drawing from oral histories and folk tales and weaving them together into a coherent narrative. The work was his, but the material was almost certainly traditional. Many Biblical scholars, although certainly not all, believe that there are three specific sources represented in Genesis and the other books of the Pentateuch, which range in origin from the tenth to the fifth century BC. They are as follows: The J strain: named for Jahweh, (Yahweh) which is the personal name for God in the Old Testament. The J strain is an amalgamation of divine revelation and scientific data. The E strain: named for Elohim, which was one of the early names for God. This strain consists mainly of dreams and divine revelations. The P strain: called, the "Priestly" strain, because it deals much more with the specifics of dates, details and descriptions, explaining, providing a bridge, as Priests do. This can be confusing at times because there are instances when the three strains contradict one another, and in some sense, each has its own distinctive theology. It should also be said that while this theory is widely held, it cannot be conclusively proved. For all practical purposes, it is best to think of Moses as the author, understanding that he would have borrowed from a number of different sources in creating the book. We should also understand that for a period of more than a thousand years, Genesis and the other books of the Pentateuch were subjected to editing and revision. Indeed, Genesis was not set in its final form, the form we read today, until about 250 BC, when the translation was made into the Greek. In your Bible study, you will come across the word "septuagint" (sept - TOO - uh - jint) which is the name given to that translation because it was done by 72 Jewish scholars who were brought to Egypt by Ptolemy II to translate the five books written by Moses. The book of Genesis is important to us because it is the foundation for understanding the rest of the Bible. All of the great themes of the Bible are introduced in Genesis, and one of the pleasures in studying the book in detail is being able to pick them out when they appear. Christians, particularly, will find all of the theme's of Jesus' ministry in this remarkable book, which is not surprising, because he would have studied Genesis in essentially the same form that we will study it in these lessons...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does a time gap exist between the first two verses of Genesis? In this book you will learn about a controversial, lesser known literal interpretation of the Genesis narrative that does not contradict the scientific evidence for an Old Earth. Commonly called the "Gap Theory" or Ruin-Reconstruction interpretation, it is a theological interpretation much older than Darwin's Theory of Evolution. It is based on the Scriptural fact that in the second verse of Genesis, the Holy Bible simply and clearly states that the planet Earth was already here (but in a ruined state) before the creative process of the seven days even begins. The Bible itself provides insight into a great mystery in Earth's natural history at what is known as the Pleistocene - Holocene boundary. Science remains at a loss to definitively explain the Ice Age and the anomaly of the mysterious mega fauna extinctions across the face of the Earth about 12,000 to 10,000 Radio Carbon years ago. Geologic evidence from that period indicates extraordinary global massive volcanism, gigantic tidal waves, seismic activity on a vast scale, and extreme temperature swings on the Earth over a geologically brief period of time. It is no coincidence that the Bible at Genesis 1:2 describes the Earth as flooded, desolate, and in darkness in the time frame closely corresponding to these catastrophic events in the Earth's natural history. Clearly, these two mysteries are linked. The Earth has an ancient natural history that can be deciphered from the geologic record, but it also has an equally important ancient spiritual history that can only be deciphered from Rightly-Dividing the Holy Bible. Knowledge of both is required to correctly reconcile Geology and the Book of Genesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unfortunately, most of our well-versed, highly educated, scripturally correct, biblically strong, doctrinally true interpreters of the Christian Bible have a tendency in their presentation of biblical topics, interpretations, and various studies to utilize generic terms without taking time to define the terminology so that everyone is on the same basic foundation. This book, Genesis, the Origin of the Beginnings, however, brings out the basic foundational subject matters as inspired by God through men. It establishes the theme and purpose of the whole Bible, shows you why every subject revealed throughout the scripture began in Genesis, and focuses on definitely defining terms such as Gods love so that you will not have to rely on your own interpretation based on such statements as Gods love is sacrificial, unconditional, etc. You will no longer struggle with the question what image of God am I? and the true meaning of life and so on. You will then, in your future study of the scripture, be able to interpret all the symbolic, figurative, parabolic, and illustrative biblical revelations based on the foundational principles found in Genesis. You will find that the foundational principles are straightforward and transcend time, while situations are not and do not. Remember there is nothing simplistic about the written Word of God, who has created all the scripture to be known to all mankind of all times, regardless of future accumulation of knowledge and experience. So read Genesis, the Origin of the Beginnings and continue to grow in the Word.

Book excerpt: Given the fever-pitched controversies about evolution, Adam and Eve, and scientific evidence for the Flood, the average person might feel intimidated by the book of Genesis. But behind the heady debates is a terrific story-one that anyone can understand, and one that has gripped people for ages. If you are not a Bible scholar but want to be able to read Genesis and understand its big picture, this brief, witty book is the guide you've been waiting for. Clear summaries and thought-provoking questions provide direction for personal reflection and group discussion. Peter Enns, a Biblical Studies professor, and Jared Byas, an Old Testament professor, summarize the book's key themes and help us see Genesis as an ancient story, one with continued relevance for human experience today. Genesis for Normal People illuminates the characters that fill the book of Genesis, causing us to resonate with their choices and struggles even as we marvel at their distant world. And that's what you'll find here-not scientific proof texts or simple moral tales, but a distant world made available, and a story that is often strange, sometimes dangerous, and always filled with rich possibilities.WHAT OTHERS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT GENESIS FOR NORMAL PEOPLE:"This book is a welcome antidote to the mystification about the book of Genesis that goes around. It is accessible for readers who want to take the plunge into this old text. It is gentle in leading readers to a critical sense of the text in response to a "late" trauma in Israel. It is imaginative in its articulation of a book that might otherwise be off-putting. The convergence of accessibility, gentleness, and imagination make this a very fine read."- Walter Brueggemann, Professor Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary"Genesis for Normal People is the perfect starting point for Christians who want to read the book of Genesis more faithfully and honestly. Enns and Byas break down the history, genre, culture, and context of this fascinating book of the Bible, so that "normal people"--you know, those who can't read ancient Hebrew--can get a better sense of its purpose, meaning and relevance. The authors manage to simplify without dumbing down, challenge without confusing, and dig for deep truth without compromising their intellectual integrity. A must-read for anyone who care enough about the Bible to want to read and understand it on its own terms."- Rachel Held Evans, author of A Year of Biblical Womanhood"The stories in the book of Genesis are among the most well known in the Bible--so much so that it's easy to lose sight of the fact that Genesis is an ancient document from a cultural setting very different from our own. Enns and Byas have provided a highly readable volume that reminds readers of its reality while explaining the meaning and significance of Genesis in light of its ancient context. An ideal book for individual and study groups interested in understanding Genesis on its own terms."- John R. Franke, General Coordinator for The Gospel and Our Culture Network"Evangelical Old Testament scholarship has come of age and is now coming out from behind the shadows of suppression and secrecy. No one represents this fresh coming of age more than Peter Enns, who, with co-author Jared Byas, makes available to any Bible reader a fresh engagement with Genesis--readable, responsible, and recognizably fresh."- Scot McKnight, Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary

Book excerpt: My book, Genesis: The Creation, is a book that causes you to critically think what you used to know through theological teachings and what you heard preached. You will see progressive prophecy reveal and challenge you to expand your thinking. In order to receive the messages and the jewels inside these pages, you must be willing to relearn how to rethink. Genesis: The Creation requires the view to see real people with real problems, whether individual personal issues, family issues, and society issues that causes you to unleash your hold on to traditions, church teaching, and your own misunderstanding about scriptures. The characters you read about in the Holy Biblethirty-nine books (The Torah, twenty-four books) the historical books, prophetic books, Book of Psalms (songs), book of laws, and the New Testament of twenty-seven booksshare the life of men, women, and children and their decisions, faith, lack of faith, forms of worship, and betrayal. Isaacs character is that of peaceful men. We can learn from this leader in grace under fire. Now we all appreciate faithfulness, imagine having to wait twenty years for your promisethat is exactly what happened to Isaac. He had married Rebekah at age forty, and they had gone through a famine and other adversities. At the age of sixty, Isaac is presented with double blessingtwins. Rebekahs age is not certain, but she is at less fifty. Rebekahs own relationship with Yahweh was strong. Her prayer was immediately answered (Genesis 25: 2223), with baby(ies) struggling inside Rebekah who asked God what was going on. No doubt she needed to know something: (a) this is my first time pregnant, but something is not feeling right! (b) Ive seen others pregnant, and it seems to me that they did not face this difficulty; (c) I know my husband has prayed to you, and he and I have spoken about this so now I need to hear from you; (d) what is your plan for what is going on inside of me, as I can accept it. After going to God, Rebakah received her answer, and she could go forward confidently with the struggle taken place in her womb. Two nations would be born to a onetime barren woman.

Book excerpt: Did the giants exist? They are written in the Bible, history, and archeology. As you can see, Cain is six feet taller than the dump truck. 14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. 15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. 16 A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. 17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous. 18 The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. 19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. 20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away (Psalm 37:1420, King James Version).

Book excerpt: Salvation requires understanding, and you can't really understand the Bible until you truly understand The Book of Genesis. Marcus Dods, D.D., was a Scottish divine and Biblical scholar who devoted much of his life to the writing and publication of theological books. Dods understanding of and devotion to this first book of the Bible is evident on every page. His goal was to bring serious Biblical knowledge within the reach of the ordinary reader, and in The Book of Genesis he has succeeded in a most admirable manner. In his writing, Marcus Dods sought to answer the foundational questions that affect every human on the planet. His expansive treatment of The Book of Genesis does exactly that, and after reading it, you'll discover a fuller and more meaningful understanding of the entire Bible. As a preacher, author and professor, Marcus Dods was well respected in Scotland and occupied a position of the first rank in the esteem of the Christian community. During the twenty-five years he served as a minister, he was perhaps the most popular preacher in the city of Glasgow. He demonstrated vast knowledge of the Bible, especially the Old Testament. Dr. Marcus Dods died in 1909, at the age of 75.

Book excerpt: We all have questions about Jesus, but very few of us get the answers we're looking for--if the answers even exist! New York Times bestselling author Eric Metaxas understands how hard it can be to get hard truths, which is why he wrote this hilarious, entertaining guide to the most influential individual to have ever lived on the face of the earth. Like his previous books in this style, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About God is a book that takes questions about the Son of God seriously enough to get silly--where appropriate. Metaxas covers questions about Jesus' life (Did he live at all?), his death, (If he truly was the Son of God, why did he have to die?), his resurrection, (Did Jesus really come back after death?), and much more.

Book excerpt: Genesis: The King Promised is the culmination of thirty years of study into the Bible and into many varied and diverse scientific disciplines, all brought together to provide this expositional commentary on the book of Genesis. You will find answers to many of your questions pertaining to Genesis by understanding the cultural influences and the history of the times surrounding this book of origins. By looking at the science and the latest in scholarship regarding the translation of the original languages, while incorporating all of the sciences that are applicable, we can now see the most complete picture of the truths that are captured in Genesis. Included are the apologetic tools that will enable you to defend your faith using up to date science that supports the Biblical account of creation, including the issues of the speed of light, the flood, and other areas that have been questioned in times past. In Genesis: The King Promised, you will see an explanation of who and what were the persons known as the nephilim, what part they played in the history of the earliest civilization before and after the flood, and whether they still exist today. Genesis: The King Promised cannot provide the answers to all of your questions regarding the beginnings of our world—as no single book could. But by including theology, history, cultural studies, science, and linguistics, this work gives a clearer look at this wondrous book—the Bible.
