Book excerpt: This book, and the tutorial simulations on which it is based, grew out of a simula tion laboratory accompanying the annual Methods in Computational Neuroscience course taught at the Marine Biology Laboratory, in Woods Hole, MA. These tutori als and early drafts of the book were further developed and refined while being used in courses taught at Caltech and several other institutions. We have designed the book to be a step-by-step tutorial for professionals, re searchers and students working in the area of neuroscience in general, and com putational neuroscience in particular. It can also be used as an interactive guide to understanding biological neuronal and network structure for those working in the area of artificial neural networks and the cognitive sciences. The tutorials are based upon the GENESIS neural simulation system, which is available at no cost from Caltech (see Appendix A). The following chapters consist of a combination of edited contributions from researchers in computational neuroscience and current users of the system, as well as several chapters which we have written ourselves.

Students of various religious and cultural traditions present their research in Jewish and Christian biblical interpretation. Fields covered include the Second Temple Period (Dead Sea Scrolls and the Life of Adam and Eve), Rabbinic literature, Early Greek and Syriac Antiochene exegesis, Syriac literature, Armenian reflections of Greek and Syriac exegesis (esp. the Armenian translations and reworkings of Eusebius of Emesa, Ephrem the Syrian and Jacob of Edessa), Ethiopic commentary tradition. Particular attention is devoted to the interrelationship between various traditions, e.g. Jewish and Christian, Greek and Syriac, Syriac and Armenian. The volume gives some telescoped insight into the cultural complexity of the Near East in Late Antiquity, where dynamic processes of cultural and religious interaction were continuously at work.

Book excerpt: Retrieves rich historical biblical insights for readers of Genesis today In this latest addition to the Bible in Medieval Tradition series, Joy Schroeder provides substantial excerpts — none previously available in English — from seven noteworthy medieval biblical interpreters who commented on Genesis between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. Representing a chronological and geographical range of authors — including Hildegard of Bingen, Nicholas of Lyra, and Denis the Carthusian — these clear, readable translations illustrate the rich diversity of medieval approaches to biblical interpretation. The commentary covers the entire book of Genesis and includes an in-depth introduction by Schroeder that locates each of the medieval authors within his or her context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Old Testament we read God s word as it was spoken to his people Israel. Today, thousands of years later, we hear in these thirty-nine books his inspired and authoritative message for us. These twin convictions, shared by all of the contributors to The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, define the goal of this ambitious series of commentaries. For those many modern readers who find the Old Testament to be strange and foreign soil, the NICOT series serves as an authoritative guide bridging the cultural gap between today s world and the world of ancient Israel. Each NICOT volume aims to help us hear God s word as clearly as possible. Scholars, pastors, and serious Bible students will welcome the fresh light that this commentary series casts on ancient yet familiar biblical texts. The contributors apply their proven scholarly expertise and wide experience as teachers to illumine our understanding of the Old Testament. As gifted writers, they present the results of the best recent research in an interesting manner. Each commentary opens with an introduction to the biblical book, looking especially at questions concerning its background, authorship, date, purpose, structure, and theology. A select bibliography also points readers to resources for their own study. The author s own translation from the original Hebrew forms the basis of the commentary proper. Verse-by-verse comments nicely balance in-depth discussions of technical matters textual criticism, critical problems, and so on with exposition of the biblical writer s theology and its implications for the life of faith today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walk Through the Book of Genesis: A Verse-By-Verse Exposition is as the title suggests, an exposition of each verse of the book of Genesis. It begins by explaining the need for faith to believe some of what it represents. However, it makes the case that the need for faith is not unique to the Bible, but to science as well. This book offers insightful commentary about how science affirms biblical truths about creation, and it clarifies traditionally misunderstood views about the seven-day creation week. Unique perspectives are presented about the fall of mankind, their expulsion from the garden of Eden, and the plan of God to redeem them to himself. Readers will be encouraged to observe God's commitment to his covenant, which he established with Abraham and his descendants, who were all fallible individuals; yet God blessed and provided them with hope for a brighter future in a land he promised to give them as an inheritance. Finally, Walk Through the Book of Genesis: A Verse-By-Verse Exposition pinpoints successes and failures in the lives of characters in the text. Their experiences serve as examples and inspire readers to persevere despite life's challenges.
