Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating collection” of wartime cartoons from the beloved children’s author and illustrator (The New York Times Book Review). For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illustrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know the work Geisel did as a political cartoonist during World War II, for the New York daily newspaper PM. In these extraordinarily trenchant cartoons, Geisel presents “a provocative history of wartime politics” (Entertainment Weekly). Dr. Seuss Goes to War features handsome, large-format reproductions of more than two hundred of Geisel’s cartoons, alongside “insightful” commentary by the historian Richard H. Minear that places them in the context of the national climate they reflect (Booklist). Pulitzer Prize–winner Art Spiegelman’s introduction places Seuss firmly in the pantheon of the leading political cartoonists of our time. “A shocker—this cat is not in the hat!” —Studs Terkel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In peacetime cartoonists are a diverse collection of individuals with their own styles and projects, but when the trumpets of war blow it is like unleashing the dogs of war. Hitler, Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt and Mussolini were a gift for them and, as this collection shows, one they weren't about to turn down. This book shows that humour was one of the key weapons of war, with countries using cartoons to demoralise their opponents and maintain morale. Each country had its own style: the British liked understatement, showing people drinking cups of tea while bombs fell, whilst the Germans chose Churchill serving up a cocktail of blood, sweat and tears to an emaciated and sickly British lion. Showcasing the very best cartoons from Britain, the USA, Germany, Russia plus the work of all of WWII's greatest cartoonists, including Bill Mauldin, Fougasse, Emett, David Low and Graham Laidler (Pont), this book is guaranteed to make you laugh.

After serving in the Spanish-American War, Brown returned to the States and began a forty-six-year career lasting from 1899 through 1945. Before and during the Second World War, Brown's cartoons lampooned Hitler, Mussolini and Japan with a strong sense of justice, humor and history. Featured six days a week in the Journal, his work boosted morale at home and lifted the spirits of soldiers overseas. Compiling more than two hundred of Brown's best cartoons, Akron native and author Tim Carroll recalls the history of World War II through the outstanding creations of one of Akron's most prolific and noteworthy artists"--Back cover.

Book excerpt: This new approach to the history of the Second World War, first published in 1990, examines the events of this period through the cartoons of the day. Roy Douglas explains the messages behind the humour and reveals that the perception of war differed radically from country to country. This collection highlights the importance of the media in this global war. ‘An authoritative narrative about what inspired the artists to take to their pens and papers... By putting it all into perspective, the poignancy, and often the brilliance of the political cartoonist is shown to the reader... Douglas’s historical narrative adds to the enjoyment.’ West Coast Review of Books ‘Douglas’s valuable book uses the political cartoon as historical mirror... The book is very important for its attempt to correlate visual media with national policy at a crucial period in recent history.’ Choice

Book excerpt: Whether producing strips, social comment in magazines like Punch or Lilliput, savage caricature of allies and enemies, or a daily chronicle of events at home or abroad, little escaped the cartoonists pen during World War II and they encapsulated the great dramas in a way impossible in prose. This book is divided into chapters covering the war year-by-year, each chapter prefaced with a concise introduction that provides a historical framework for the cartoons of that year. Altogether some 300 cartoons, in color and black and white, have been skillfully blended to produce a unique record of World War II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LESLIE ILLINGWORTH was one of the most distinguished British political cartoonists of the 20th century and remains for many 'the cartoonists' cartoonist'. Yet though his career spanned more than 50 years - longer than either of his great contemporaries Sir David Low and Vicky - very little has been published about his life and works. Some of Illingworth's best cartoons were published for the Daily Mail during the Second World War (examples were even found in Hitler's bunker) and this book collects together for the first time 100 of his greatest to mark the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict. Illingworth joined the Daily Mail soon after the war started, and remained with the paper for 30 years. A superb draughtsman and an acute political commentator, he also drew weekly for Punch for two decades. The magazine's editor Malcolm Muggeridge even felt that his cartoons were better than Low's: 'Illingworth's go deeper, becoming, at their best, satire in the grand style rather than mischievous quips'. A student under Sir William Rothenstein at the Royal College of Art during one of its most brilliant periods - fellow students included Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Eric Ravilious - he left to become full-time political cartoonist on Wales' national paper, the Western Mail, at the age of only 19. A founding member and the first President of the British Cartoonists' Association in 1966, he was made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by the University of Kent in 1975. In addition he drew for American publications - including a famous cover for Time magazine - and was officially presented to US President L.B. Johnson in 1968. This unique collection is divided into chapters covering the war year-by-year and the book draws extensively on archive material held at the National Library of Wales and only recently catalogued in association with the British Cartoon Archive at the University of Kent. It also contains the first biography of Illingworth based on unique access to hitherto unavailable family records.

Book excerpt: After being hidden for six decades, this collection brings previously unpublished material to light, presenting an assortment of entertaining political commentary. Chronicling the period leading up to World War II as well as the war years themselves, each of these editorial cartoons are accompanied by an introduction and a brief essay identifying the major players, placing them in historical context and providing fascinating details related to the progress of the war while emphasizing its impact on Canada. Refusing to flinch from the horror of combat, these caricatures also manage to demonstrate the heavy price paid by civilians and military personnel, displaying a scathing characterization of the Axis powers while illustrating the belief that the Allies would inevitably prevail. Allowing war to be viewed through a lens of subtle humor, this medley is an important posthumous contribution to the literary world.

Belmonte became known through the political and social cartoons published in major newspapers and magazines between the 1920s and the 1940s. Although unknown in a major part of the world (including Brazil), his works are among the most interesting and unique of its kind. This book aims to rescue the memory of this great artist, prematurely deceased in 1947, at age 50, to portray the greatest scourge created by human race for their own use and also inspire illustration and history lovers.
