Book excerpt: July 1933. Percy Bigler is a contented, homespun boy from the hills and hollows of Elizabeth, West Virginia, but as the Great Depression lingers, necessity leads him to enroll in the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC's projects require an army of hard-working laborers, and Percy doesn't shy from hazardous duties, but he finds himself in unfamiliar territory more than 2,000 miles from home where egos, innuendos, and a particularly stubborn female test his determination to provide for his family. Percy dodges pitfalls, battles to protect his heart, and suffers an acute case of homesickness while everything he loves in West Virginia begins to fray. He wants to heed his father's wise words, "When life gets tough, do likewise," but it's hardly that simple. Duty tells him to stay the course. His heart calls him home. Either choice wields an immeasurable and irretrievable loss.

The mother and her brother John had moved near the other daughter, Lou, to be near as Nancy Rich had become quite senile and needed constant care. When she passed away, one of Jenny's daughters moved with them to West Virginia and the other was in Germany in the W.A.A.C's, the women's army corps. Myree had come from service early as her husband was discharged and he moved back to Florida to be near his parents. As Usual, Jenny was fuming because she never heard from the youngest daughter. Then she remembered how her mother had taken care of that kind of problem. Mammy Rich had her daughter call 'collect' each week if she didn't hear from her. So Jenny Wren soon got the message and made it a habit to write a whole book of happenings to her mother. Her mom would laugh when she got the thick letter each week.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:  This novel is the story of a European immigrant woman, very charming and attractive to men, attempting to become a rich American. It is also the story of Rick Stevens search, despite his sexual hang-ups, for the ideal wife.  Kert von Fielding was in her mid thirties when she made her first voyage aboard the MS Gripsholm, sailing from Helsinki, Finland, to New York City.  Kert had majored in languages at Helsinki University where she earned both a B.A. and an M.A., and had later worked as a translator. She knew five langagesFinish, Swedish, English, French, and German. She hoped someday to obtain translating work in New York City.  But this first time in the states, she visited her cousins in Salem on the Lake, a small town in Ohio on the banks of Lake Erie. While there, she made the acquaintance of Mart Appleby, ten years her junior, and the son of the highly esteemed and supposedly wealthy Municipal Court Judge of the townCalvin W. Appleby II. Their friendship, during the summer of 1957, ripened into an intense love affair, involving a lot of sex. She fell madly in love with Mart Appleby and thought he loved her in return. She was mistaken, but she kept sending him love letters after he went to the West Virginia Institute of Technology where he was employed as a psychology/sociology assistant professor.  Mart did not answer any of Kerts letters. Then, failing at this affair, she turned to his older half- brother,Rick Stevens, who was closer to her age, five years her junior. Rick was interested but wary. She discussed with him her plan to become an American citizen by marrying an American.  Rick, a new high school science teacher, was conservative and not nearly as daring as his younger half-brother Mart. Kert definitely preferred Mart as a mate instead of Rick. But shed marry Rick as a means to an endobtaining her citizenshipand then leave. She figured she could hide in New York City.  When her VISA expired she returned to Helsinki, Finland. While there she wrote numerous letters to Rick, finally writing lovey-dovey type letters. She told him she would return to visit.  She returned to New York City the next year aboard the MS Gripsholm. During the seven-day passage she had a shipboard romance with a handsome and congenial man in his mid thirties, Chad Power, an assistant professor of English at Hunter College in NYC and the son of a multimillionaire.  Without giving away any more of the story, suffice it to say that Kert, using sex and her feminine wiles and machinations, managed to be married to two handsome virile men at the same time, without either of them being aware of her duplicity, and to obtain her citizenship twice.  Did Kert ever become rich? You will need to read the book to find out. And, please dont skip around.

Book excerpt: On a hot and humid July day in 2016, I set out from my home in the heart of Toronto on a three-hundred dollar bicycle, alone, forty-one years old, with next-to-no camping or long-distance cycling experience. My destination: more than two thousand kilometers away, the Cabot Trail. I had no idea what I was doing or why I was doing it. All I knew was I was scared as hell. Single, no children, and perhaps feeling a little lost, I was unsure of so many things about my life. However, this bike ride I was entirely sure about. It was the only thing that felt right; so perhaps the journey would give me the reason? But would my girlish gumption be enough to see me through camping alone in the deep, dark woods, riding across thousands of kilometers, and climbing the many mountains of the Cabot Trail? Would going it alone and placing my faith in my fellow humans prove well-founded? Every moment was like a wild and wonderful wager. I knew in my heart that women are strong and that people are good. And this summer, I basically bet my life on it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The most comprehensive and comprehendible history of the West Virginia Coal War I’ve ever read.” —John Sayles, writer and director of Matewan On September 1, 1912, the largest, most protracted, and deadliest working-class uprising in American history was waged in West Virginia. On one side were powerful corporations whose millions bought armed guards and political influence. On the other side were fifty thousand mine workers, the nation’s largest labor union, and the legendary “miners’ angel,” Mother Jones. The fight for unionization and civil rights sparked a political crisis that verged on civil war, stretching from the creeks and hollows of the Appalachians to the US Senate. Attempts to unionize were met with stiff resistance. Fundamental rights were bent—then broken. The violence evolved from bloody skirmishes to open armed conflict, as an army of more than fifty thousand miners finally marched to an explosive showdown. Extensively researched and vividly told, this definitive book about an often-overlooked chapter of American history, “gives this backwoods struggle between capital and labor the due it deserves. [Green] tells a dark, often despairing story from a century ago that rings true today” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).
