For three years Shannon Lee Dawdy travelled the U.S., from Vermont to California, Illinois to Alabama, posing such questions to a wide range of people from all walks of life. Many of her interlocutors recently lost loved ones. She also spoke to people who have made death their business: funeral directors, death care entrepreneurs, designers, cemetery owners, and death doulas about the changes they were seeing, and in many cases promoting, in how the bodies of recently-deceased persons are being treated, and how the memory of the deceased are being memorialized, in the U.S. Her ethnographic research resulted in this book, a wide-ranging investigation into rapidly-changing death practices in the twenty-first century United States. The author is also working on a documentary film project on this topic with cinematographer Daniel Zox. Still photos from the film work will appear in this book"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, LMU Munich, language: English, abstract: Having been published in 1908, a time of social unrest, anarchy and revolution in England (Carpenter 1985, 165), The Wind in the Willows is now over one hundred years old and has become a canonical and popular work of literature, beloved by adults and children alike. The plot of the novel is based on two interlocked narratives: the Bildungsroman of Mole, who is initiated into the well-established, domestic society of the River-Bankers and the story of the adventurous, over-excessive, nouveau-riche Toad who is brought to reason by his friends in the end. The values of the dusty highway and the wide world are contrasted with the warmth of the homely riverbank so that preferences among the audience are inclined to emerge. Mendelson (1988, 127) declares that adults tend to prefer the coziness of the riverbank and the fellowship between Mole, Rat and Badger and that children on the other hand love the adventures of Toad. In contrast to the reality in Britain at the time of the novel's publishing, the world of the River-Bankers is an idyllic bachelors' Arcadia free of sorrows, death and sex. It represents an insulated society that is protected from the Wide World and has its own unquestioned hierarchical social arrangements. However, as Carpenter states it, “there is little evidence that Grahame took [this] kind of interest in current social events“, even though Peter Green (in his biography of Kenneth Grahame) argues that the story has “an unmistakable social symbolism” (Carpenter, 165). He is inclined to see it as accidental coloring acquired because of the time the novel was written in rather than the author's specific purpose. As it is a very complex piece of literature, many different readings as well as interpretations exist, not only with regard to underlying second meanings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rita Gigante grew up in a world swirling with secrets, lies, and multiple sins. Her father, notorious Mafia boss Vincent "the Chin" Gigante, was the leader of the Genovese crime clan and the head of all five New York crime families for decades. But until she was 16, she was kept in the dark about his underworld activities. She unknowingly hung out at mob headquarters and witnessed her dad’s whispered meetings around the dinner table, but only knew what she was told by her mother and siblings about his odd behavior: Dad’s sick. Keep your mouth shut. Don’t talk about the family. Living with the family secret—and other shocking betrayals she was to uncover, then instructed to conceal—plunged Rita into emotional and physical turmoil for years. And then there was the blockbuster secret she herself kept hidden away: As the youngest girl in an old-fashioned, devout Catholic family, how could she confess to the unforgiving Godfather that she was a lesbian? They were all going to hell, she figured . . . unless she could find a way to embrace the truth and find redemption. In The Godfather’s Daughter, Rita details her spiritual journey as she unravels the mysteries of her family and herself, and learns what it means to live in the truth she finds. It’s a real-life father-daughter tale of betrayal and faith, violence and love—and how a young woman escaped from a spiraling darkness to reach the light. And in the end, with his daughter’s healing help, even the Godfather finally learns to live in the light and atone for his sins.
