Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celia and Granny Meg Go to Paris: a survival guide is a charming children's story. It contains life lessons as well as historical facts about French life and how to be a polite tourist. In a rash moment, Granny Meg promises Celia, her eldest grandchild and only granddaughter, a three-day visit to Paris by Eurostar as a tenth birthday treat. During their time in Paris they will try to speak only French, something Celia's Dad feels would result in a very quiet few days if it ever actually happened. But Fate suddenly intervenes and their visit to Paris turns out to be anything but quiet... On Celia and Granny Meg’s first afternoon, they are involved in an incident at the Eiffel Tower which catapults them into a different scenario. But even after an attempted theft the next morning, they fail to realise that they have become the targets of some very unpleasant characters who will stop at nothing to get what they want from them.. Before long, they are being followed all over Paris by dangerous criminals who are involved in a crime that threatens the security of the French Republic itself. It is then up to Celia and Granny Meg, the most unlikely crime fighting duo ever, to save the day. But first they must save themselves, and that might not be so easy... Inspired by true events, Celia and Granny Meg Go to Paris: a survival guide will appeal to children aged 9-12. The author herself is inspired by Rumer Godden who has written numerous books including The Greengage Summer which is Margaret’s personal favourite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seventh volume in the Collected Works of Florence Nightingale consists of letters, observations, and notes from Florence Nightingale’s many trips to Europe, beginning with a family journey when she was a teenager. It includes annotations she made on opera libretti from her “music mad” phase and her winter in Rome (1847-48) which were so important in shaping her liberal politics and support for independence movements. Her letters and notes from Greece and central Europe in 1850, and her Kaisers- werth stay in 1851, reveal her developing ideas on social reform, as well as her first professional training. Materials from 1853 provide information on her training in Paris hospitals. Volume 7 also contains letters and observations from her excursions to Scotland, Ireland, and all over England, from her childhood on. Many of the letters in European Travels were uncatalogued items buried in archives and will be new to Nightingale scholars. The information gathered in this volume adds considerably to what can be learned about the formative influences in Nightingale’s life, politics, and faith. Currently, Volumes 1 to 11 are available in e-book version by subscription or from university and college libraries through the following vendors: Canadian Electronic Library, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, and Netlibrary.

Book excerpt: Part of Emile Zola’s multigenerational Rougon-Macquart saga, The Belly of Paris is the story of Florent Quenu, a wrongly accused man who escapes imprisonment on Devil’s Island. Returning to his native Paris, Florent finds a city he barely recognizes, with its working classes displaced to make way for broad boulevards and bourgeois flats. Living with his brother’s family in the newly rebuilt Les Halles market, Florent is soon caught up in a dangerous maelstrom of food and politics. Amid intrigue among the market’s sellers–the fishmonger, the charcutière, the fruit girl, and the cheese vendor–and the glorious culinary bounty of their labors, we see the dramatic difference between “fat and thin” (the rich and the poor) and how the widening gulf between them strains a city to the breaking point. Translated and with an Introduction by the celebrated historian and food writer Mark Kurlansky, The Belly of Paris offers fascinating perspectives on the French capital during the Second Empire–and, of course, tantalizing descriptions of its sumptuous repasts.

Book excerpt: In this moving, tender memoir of losing a beloved spouse, the longtime editor of Texas Monthly, newly widowed, returns alone to a city whose enchantment he's only ever shared with his wife, in search of solace, memories, and the courage to find a way forward. At the age of sixty-six, after thirty-five years of marriage, Gregory Curtis finds himself a widower. Tracy--with whom he fell in love the first time he saw her--has succumbed to a long battle with cancer. Paralyzed by grief, agonized by social interaction, Curtis turns to watching magic lessons on DVD--"a pathetic, almost comical substitute" for his evenings with Tracy. To break the spell, he returns to the place he had the "best and happiest times" of his life. As he navigates the storied city and contemplates his new future, Curtis relives his days in Paris with Tracy, piecing together the portrait of a woman, a marriage, parenthood, and his life's great love through the memories of six unforgettable trips to the City of Lights. Alone in Paris, Curtis becomes a tireless wanderer, exploring the city's grand boulevards and forgotten corners as he confronts the bewildering emotional state that ensues after losing a life partner. Paris Without Her is a work of tremendous courage and insight--an ode to the lovely woman who was his wife, to a magnificent city, and to the self we might invent, and reinvent, there.
