Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about effective literacy instruction for students in grades K-4 who use the language variety that many linguists call African American English, but which, as explained in the Introduction, the author calls Black Communications (BC). Throughout, considerable attention is given to discussing the integral and complex interconnections among African American language, culture, and history, drawing significantly on examples from African American historical and literary sources. Although it is theoretical in its description of the BC system and its discussion of research on language socialization in African American communities, the major focus of this book is pedagogy. Many concrete examples of successful classroom practices are included so that teachers can readily visualize and use the strategies and principles presented. *Part I, ‘What is Black Communications?” presents an overview of the BC system, providing a basic introduction to the major components of the language—phonology, grammar, lexicon, and pragmatics, and illustrating how these components work in synchrony to create a coherent whole. *Part II, “Language Socialization in the African American Discourse Community,” examines existing research on African American children’s language socialization. *Part III, “Using African American Children’s Literature,” draws connections between strategy instruction and the linguistic and rhetorical abilities discussed in Part II. Each chapter ends with suggestions for using African American literature to help children develop their speaking and writing abilities. *Part IV, “Children Using Language,” moves from a focus on teaching comprehension strategies to helping BC speakers learn to decode text. This volume is directed to researchers, faculty, and graduate students in the fields of language and literacy education and linguistics, and is well-suited as a text for graduate-level courses in these areas.

Book excerpt: In this book, African American literature is illuminated through a project-based curriculum that incorporates national curriculum standards. It is important that the school curriculae be representative of the diversity of the American student population. Integrating African American Literature in the Library and Classroom is designed to help teachers and librarians achieve that goal. The book recommends and annotates more than 200 titles that touch on African American life from slavery through the present time, most of them by black authors, and many of them winners of the Coretta Scott King, Caldecott, and/or Newbery awards. This guide offers cross-curricular lesson plans for grades K–12. Each chapter identifies areas in which instructional attention is most needed to help students develop a greater appreciation for diversity, perseverance, and ethnicity. Examples and ideas for activities are offered to reinforce related concepts. With this book, teachers and librarians will be better able to motivate and inform, helping students discover the richness of African American culture now and through time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zoe's arms prickle. She turns, trying to take it all in. The ache inside returns. It is not for her. It is too much. A real room with real floors and walls. A room for sleeping, and reading and dancing and . . . in her imagination she has pictured the room, but she has never pictured herself in it. Can seventeen-year-old Zoe make it on her own? A room is not much. It is not arms holding you. Not a kiss on the forehead. Not a packed lunch or a remembered birthday. Just a room. But for seventeen-year-old Zoe, struggling to shed the suffocating responsibility of her alcoholic mother and the controlling guilt of her grandmother, a rented room on Lorelei Street is a fierce grab for control of her own future. Zoe rents a small room from Opal Keats, an eccentric old lady who has a difficult past of her own, but who chooses to live in the possibility of the future. Zoe tries to find that same possibility in her own future, promising that she will never go crawling back. But with all odds against her, can a seventeen-year-old who only slings hash to make ends meet make it on her own? Zoe struggles with this worry and the guilt of abandoning her mother as she goes to lengths that even she never dreamed she would in order to keep the room on Lorelei Street.

When tomorrow comes, this day is gone. In its place are memories we left behind. I pray that your memories will be filled with love. Not every day begins with a beautiful sunrise. Sometimes, it's stormy and raining, but it is all for a purpose. Love is like a flower. God has put that seed in your heart to grow. Without the rain, the flower won't be as strong and beautiful as it could be. Remember, storms come and go, but love stays forever. Love is not love unless it is given away. Live your life to the fullest with each new day. Remember that yesterday is gone and tomorrow is out of sight. Live for today and let your love grow strong.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating the wealth of quality multicultural literature recently published for children and young adults, this valuable resource examines the fiction, oral tradition, and poetry from four major ethnic groups in the United States. Each of these genres is considered in turn for the literature dealing with African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native-American Indians. Taking up where their earlier volume This Land is Our Land left off, Helbig and Perkins have teamed up once again to identify and expertly evaluate more than 500 multicultural books published from 1994 through 1999. Both considered authorities in the field of children's literature, the two of them personally selected, read, and evaluated all the books included here. Their insightful annotations help readers carefully consider both literary standards such as plot development, characterization, and style, as well as cultural values as they are represented in these cited works. Each entry also indicates the suggested age and grade level appropriateness of the work. With the proliferation and ever increasing popularity of multicultural literature for children and young adults, this sensitively written volume will serve as an invaluable collection development tool. Teachers, as well as librarians, will find the comprehensiveness and organization of this bibliography helpful as a guide in selecting appropriate materials for classroom use. Even students will find this book easy to use, with its five indexes identifying works by title, writer, illustrator, grade level, and subject. Public libraries and school media centers will find much use for Many Peoples, One Land.
