Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visitors' Guide to Salem This little pamphlet is offered to the public in the hope that it may, in a measure at least, fill a place that has heretofore been unoccupied, - that of a brief local guide. The intention has been to condense into as few pages as possible such information as is needed by the tourist or stranger in taking a stroll about the city. It has seemed to the compilers that such a book would be acceptable, and this has accordingly been prepared. It may be that this book will also be welcome in Salem households as one by which visiting friends can be readily guided to the places of interest about the city, and a few prominent facts regarding them be recalled. If this little pathfinder in any degree fills these wants, the writers will be quite satisfied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Salem and the Immediate Vicinity: Columbiana County, Ohio The history of Salem and its vicinity shows how a vast Wilderness has been transformed into a pros perons and wealthycity, and much of the domain into productive farms. Many of the young people of both sexes, who have been born and raised here will not be content to remain here, but will go west where they will expect to get land at a low price, and then grow in prosperity with the place of their choice for a home. What our pioneers have done will be examples for them to imitate; and perhaps improve ment on them can be made by adventurers from our city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dulcibel a Tale of Old Salem In the afternoon Of a sunny Autumn day, nearly two hundred years ago, a young man was walking along one Of the newly Opened roads which led into Salem Village, or what is now called Danvers Centre, in the then Province Of Massachusetts Bay. The town of Salem, that which is now the widely known City of that name, lay between four and five miles to the southeast, on a tongue of land formed by two inlets of the sea, called now as then North and South Rivers. Next to Plymouth it is the Oldest town in New England, having been first settled in 1626. Not till three years after were Boston and Charlestown commenced by the arrival of eleven ships from England. It is a Significant fact, as showing the hardships to which the early settlers were exposed, that of the fifteen hundred persons composing this Boston expedi tion, two hundred died during the first winter. Salem has also the honor of establishing the first New England church organization, in 1629, with the Reverend Francis Higginson as its pastor. Salem village was an adjunct Of Salem, the town taking in the adjacent lands for the purpose Of tillage to a distance Of Six miles from the meet ing-house. But in the progress of settlement, Salem Village also became entitled to a Church Of its own; and it had one regularly established at the date Of our story, with the Reverend Samuel Parris as presiding elder or minister. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Salem as I Knew It The different names applied to Abraham Lincoln's old home near Petersburg, Illinois have been very confusing to strangers, but New Salem and Old Salem designate the same place at a different period of time. Probably the proper appellation was used by Wm. E. Barton who called the place Old (new) Salem, but common usage would never accept such a seeming incongruity, ' New Salem was the village that stood about ten years, then disappeared. Later the name Old Salem came to be used naturally and by common consent to designate the site of the old vil lage and vicinity. It has been known by this name for al most ninety years, extending between the two periods - the disappearing and the restoring of the village. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's New Salem No other portion of Lincoln's life lends itself so readily to intensive study of his environment as do his six years at New Salem. His physical surroundings have been re-created. The names and occupations of practically all of his asso ciates and something of the character of many of them are known. The village was small enough to make practicable a reasonably complete description of its people and its life. Aside from its connection with Lincoln, New Salem is important as an example of a typical American pioneer vil lage. There were hundreds like it. Some of them survived others died, as it did. It is one of the few - perhaps the only one - whose founding, growth and decline can be minutely traced. Part One of this book is devoted to the history Of New Sa lem. It tells who the inhabitants were, how they lived, how they looked on life. Since many of those most active in the village lived in outlying settlements the account is not limited to the village, but provides a picture of the whole community. Part One sets the stage, so to speak; for Part Two, in which Lincoln's activities are discussed, and the meaning of the New Salem years in his development is ap praised. Part Three explains the growth of the Lincoln legend around the site of the lost town, and the changing conception of the significance of the frontier as a factor in Lincoln's life. It explains how New Salem came to be re stored, the manner in which the facts about the old cabins were secured, how the furnishings were acquired, and the problems that had to be solved in the restoration.
