Its occasion is the present celebration of the centennial of the church edifice. My father, who served the congregation longer than any of her pastors, exceeding the term of Dr. Ernst by a few months, looked forward with eager ness to the coming celebration, which would have rounded out the 4sth anniversary of his entrance into the ministry and the fifteenth year of our joint pastorate. He desired to begin work on this his tory already in last January, but I could not take it up then. He died unable to communicate his knowledge. George H. Reinoehl, who also was looking forward to this celebration, and who was an authority on church and town history, died a week earlier. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Old Salem and the Towns Adjacent: Viz; Danvers, Beverly, Marblehead and Lynn There was a great stir one afternoon, at the Cape. A youngster named Jabez Tilley had gone out to pick blackberries in the woods toward Manchester. After an absence of a couple of hours, he reappeared at the settlement, making headway with all the speed his duck-legs were capable of. His locomotive tune was pitched so high, that he pitched himself over the rocks, down into a salt-pan - for extensive salt-works were established at the Cape by the first comers - before he had power to bring up. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Salem Scrap Book, Vol. 5: The Town Cryer; The Wizard of Electricity of 1771; Prices of the Gay Nineties and Miscellany "It is ordered that hee who is to cry things lost shall keepe a booke wherein he shall write down faithfully all such things with the marks, the parties named, and the days of crying it, for which he shall have 2 pence. "Hee is to cry at 3 severall times, and this order is to be observed in every towne." General Court of Massachusetts 1642. "Hear Ye! Hear Ye!" "The Town Cryer" has news to tell. The proclaimer of information to the populace - the successor to the king's herald. Of office as old as Bible days, so some say, and now succeeded by the voice of the radio. Dr. Bentley spelled it "Cryer," and he was school teacher, as well as minister, and knew languages 20. Yet moderns spell it "crier." In his diary Bentley told of some of the duties of "The Town Cryer." He walked about, ringing his bell, and shouting the news that a ship was that day to be launched, that Dr. Waterhouse was to speak in the evening and that the "theatrical mimies" were coming to town. Book excerpt: Whether you dream of restoring a John Deere or have a whole shed full of them, you'll cherish the reminiscences within the pages of This Old John Deere. This book is a treasury of memories?"short stories, essays, tall tales, and reminiscences?"all devoted to John Deere tractors and to their role on the family farm. The authors of the pieces collected in this anthology come from a wide range of backgrounds and farming regions. Some are respected respected tractor historians; other are regular farm folk with a story to share. The beautiful photography comes from a variety of well-known photographers and archives, and there's also an endearing selection of paintings and other farm art. There's no tractor like a John Deere. The most popular make among collectors and restorers deserves its own tribute, so we've gathered a fabulous collection of artwork and stories devoted just to the famous green machines. Stories--ranging from the first ride upon a John Deere to the fateful day when the team of horses was replaced by the shiny new Johnny Popper--by well-known and respected farm contributors include Patricia Penton Leimbach, Donald Zolan, Dave Barnhouse, Don Macmillan, C.H. Wendel, and Ralph W. Sanders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acknowledged as the classic work on North Carolina cuisine, North Carolina and Old Salem Cookery was first published in 1955. This new edition, marking the book's first appearance in paperback, has been revised and updated by the author and includes several dozen new dishes. The book is already a standard reference in many kitchens, both for the wealth of good recipes it presents and for the accompanying information on the distinctive heritage of the state's cooking. Beth Tartan provides recipes for such North Carolina classics as Persimmon Pudding and Sweet Potato Pie. A chapter on Old Salem highlights the cuisine of the Moravian settlement there and offers recipes, including Moravian Sugar Cake, from their famous celebrations. Tartan evokes the time when people ate three meals a day and sat down to a magical Sunday dinner each week. With the advent of boxed mixes and supermarkets, she says, old favorites began to disappear from menus. And in time, so have the cooks whose storehouse of knowledge and skills represent an important link to our past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Tiya Miles explores the popular yet troubling phenomenon of "ghost tours," frequently promoted and experienced at plantations, urban manor homes, and cemeteries throughout the South. As a staple of the tours, guides entertain paying customers by routinely relying on stories of enslaved black specters. But who are these ghosts? Examining popular sites and stories from these tours, Miles shows that haunted tales routinely appropriate and skew African American history to produce representations of slavery for commercial gain. "Dark tourism" often highlights the most sensationalist and macabre aspects of slavery, from salacious sexual ties between white masters and black women slaves to the physical abuse and torture of black bodies to the supposedly exotic nature of African spiritual practices. Because the realities of slavery are largely absent from these tours, Miles reveals how they continue to feed problematic "Old South" narratives and erase the hard truths of the Civil War era. In an incisive and engaging work, Miles uses these troubling cases to shine light on how we feel about the Civil War and race, and how the ghosts of the past are still with us.
