Book excerpt: A medieval melody begins in the prequel to the Song series from #1 New York Times bestselling author Catherine Coulter. Chandra de Avenell might look like a golden princess, but she fights like a warrior, dreams a warrior’s dreams, wears a warrior’s pride like a suit of armor. She wants to be strong, independent and free. She has no use at all for a husband. Enter the man her father has selected for her. Jerval de Vernon takes one look at Chandra, and he wants her. After he saves her from a very bad situation, he sets himself to wooing her, not an easy task. Now Jerval must figure out how to coerce Chandra into giving him her loyalty and trust—and maybe even her love. But his new wife has no intention of giving in easily... They were known as the "War Poets." They were stationed at military bases and camps around the world, and their literary contributions have been almost lost or inaccessible for over seventy years. Songs of the Warriors also known as the War Poems Project, was an attempt to recover, compile, rediscover, re-appreciate, and re-enjoy these national literary treasures. This literary archaeology represents the war poets' deepest experiences: love, joy, death, loneliness, boredom, depression, humor, and frustration while they were on active duty in violent combat zones or remote bases around the world. A collection of poems written by military personnel during World War II and re-presented in the twenty-first century, Songs of the Warriors, is a treasure, revealing our brave soldier's thoughts, and dreams about war, death, living conditions, loved ones, the military, and their homes back in the United States.

Book excerpt: When the worthless treaties were signed and it was time to move the Ho-Chunk/Winnebago nation, the people took only what they could carry on their backs. There isnt a person alive today who can describe the atrocities, hardships, and deprivation their ancestors faced while being moved from their land to a strange place, unable to travel or live where their ancestors were buried. No longer could they provide food and lodging for their families; they had to depend on the government for monthly rations of food, blankets, and medical attention. Every Warrior Has His Own Song explores the history and culture of the Winnebago and Ho-Chunk peoples, as well as the personal history of the family of author Alan B. Walker. Patriotic and fiercely loyal to this country and the land of their ancestors, they show respect to the returning veterans of any war. As Walker grew older, he knew that he wanted to be a warrior and wondered if he had the right stuff; in the course of his exploration of his peoples culture, he also tells the story of his service in Vietnam. Every Warrior Has His Own Song touches on the history and modern life of the Ho- Chunk/Winnebago nation as well as the story of the Hatchett family, telling a timeless and relevant tale of bravery. It is an amazing read. I had a hard time putting it down. I believe this book should be a part of every high schools history teachings. It angered me to see what the U.S. Government has done over and over to these Native American Indians. Why have a treaty if you're not going to stand behind it? I was also amazed by the courage of this writer. His service to this country, like his Grandfathers is one of pride and courage. I'm amazed and glad that Alan B. Walker lived through the Vietnam war so that his story and that of his people could be told. -Aron

Book excerpt: Parker Shaw, a political philosophy major at the University of Virginia, tries to figure out what to do with his life. His father wants him to study law. Parker has a strange dream which sends him on a seeker's path. Curiosity takes him and his buddy, Sam, on a road trip to the American Southwest, where he meets an eerily familiar Indian man. When he returns to school to complete his final year, is it fate or a strange confluence of events that finds him near the Pentagon on September 11, 2001? This is the first novel in a four-part series, which is a thought-provoking and at times satirical inquiry into the roots of modern American identity and the ageless tension between rationality and spirituality.

This epic is a welcome introduction to the spiritual world of the Albanians as they fought the crusades. The "Songs of the Frontier Warrior is the first English-language translation ever made of Albanian epic verse. As the product of a little-known culture and a difficult, rarely studied language, the Albanian epic has tended to remain in the shadow of the Serbo-Croatian, or more properly, Bosnian epic, with which it has undeniable affinities. This translation may thus be regarded as an initial attempt to rectify the imbalance and to give scholars and the reading public in general an opportunity to delve into the exotic world of the northern Albanian tribes. The present bilingual edition offers a broad selection of the best known songs. Also included are an introduction, a glossaries of terms and sources, and a selective bibliography.

Book excerpt: The basis for the cult-classic film The Warriors chronicles one New York City gang’s nocturnal journey through the seedy, dangerous subways and city streets of the 1960s. “Warriors, come out to play-yay!” Every gang in the city meets on a sweltering July 4 night in a Bronx park for a peace rally. The crowd of miscreants turns violent after a prominent gang leader is killed and chaos prevails over the attempt at order. The Warriors follows the Dominators making their way back to their home territory without being killed. The police are prowling the city in search of anyone involved in the mayhem. An exhilarating novel that examines New York City teenagers, left behind by society, who form identity and personal strength through their affiliation with their “family,” The Warriors “goes to the core of the heart of darkness” as it weaves together social commentary with ancient legends for a classic coming-of-age tale (Flyer). This edition includes a new introduction by the author. “It seems to me the best novel of its kind I’ve ever read, an altogether perfect achievement. I’m sure that to many it will sound like sacrilege but I have to say that I think it a better novel than Lord of the Flies.” —Warren Miller, author of The Cool World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chrysovalantis Kyriacou examines how memories of the pre-Christian past, Christian militarism, power struggles, and ethnoreligious encounters have left their long-term imprint on Cypriot culture. One of the most impressive examples of this phenomenon is the preservation and transformative adaptation of Byzantine heroic themes, motifs, and symbols in Cypriot folk songs. By combining a variety of written sources and archaeological material in his interdisciplinary examination, the author reconstructs the image of the Byzantine warrior hero in the songs, recovering the mentalities of overshadowed social protagonists and stressing the role of subaltern communities as active agents in the shaping of history.
