First published in 1960, Wagon Road North is the quintessential popular history book chronicling gold-rush-era BC. Focusing on the Cariboo Wagon Road—the crucial transportation route stretching from Fort Yale to Barkerville that made it possible for tens of thousands of prospectors to make their way to the Cariboo goldfields in the 1860s—this newly updated, expanded, and re-designed edition brings to life the adventures, hardships, and blind ambitions of the men and women who risked everything in the quest for gold. Packed with more than one hundred archival photos, many of them rarely seen, as well as maps and contemporary images of historical sites, this fascinating book is a visual celebration of a pivotal chapter in early BC history.

Book excerpt: It’s a cinematic image as familiar as John Wayne’s face: a wagon train circling as a defensive maneuver against Indian attacks. This book examines actual and fictional wagon-train battles and compares them for realism. It also describes how fledgling Hollywood portrayed the concept of westward migration but, as the evolving industry became more accurate in historical detail, how filmmakers then lost sight of the big picture.
Book Synopsis We Don't Exactly Get the Welcome Wagon by : Gerald P. Mallon
Download or read book We Don't Exactly Get the Welcome Wagon written by Gerald P. Mallon and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on over twenty years of child welfare experience and extensive interviews with 54 gay and lesbian young people who lived in out-of-home-care child welfare settings in three North American cities--Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto--Gerald Mallon presents narratives of marginalized young people trying to find the "right fit." Mallon permits the voices of these young people to guide the research, allowing them to tell their own stories and to suggest what is important in their own words. Their experiences help the reader to begin to understand the discrepancies between the myths and misinformation about gay and lesbian adolescents and their realities in the out-of-home child welfare systems in which they live. The first comprehensive examination of the experiences of gay and lesbian youths in the child welfare system, We Don't Exactly Get the Welcome Wagon makes solid recommendations to social work practitioners as well as to policy makers about how they can provide a competent practice for gay and lesbian adolescents, and offers a methods chapter which will be useful in classroom instruction.

Download or read book Snoqualmie Pass written by Yvonne Prater and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 1982-12-31 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Filled with historical photographs * Includes excerpts from diaries, newspaper files, community histories, and personal interviews The highway through Washington's Cascades at Snoqualmie Pass is one of the most heavily used mountain transportation routes in the country. Yet, within sight of its concrete ribbons, one can find sections of the primitive wagon road that brought prairie-state settlers through the pass to open up the Puget Sound country. Traces can still be found of an even earlier route, the trail used by the Indians for hunting and trading. Others traveled the pass as civilization moved West: fur traders, miners, military horse columns, cattle drovers, farmers, precursors of today's land developers. A little ferryboat once crossed Lake Keechelus to link up the wagon road; then logging and dam building altered the lake forever. The coming of the automobile; the establishment of two railways and then subsequent waves of highway construction brought the pass into the modern era, which also saw the birth of the ski resort in the Northwest. This is the story of the evolution of the Snoqualmie Pass, from narrow Indian trail to multi-laned Interstate 90, and of the people who took part along the way. For the hundreds who drive through the pass daily, for the countless thousands more who have skied, hiked, snowshoed and climbed in this alpine playground, it's a fascinating tale.

Book Synopsis The North West Company by : Marjorie Wilkins Campbell
Download or read book The North West Company written by Marjorie Wilkins Campbell and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1779 a group of independent fur traders from Montreal banded together to form the North West Company; this was a trading expedient and no one could have foreseen its brilliant and far-reaching results. Before the North West Company name disappeared in a merger with the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1821 it had spanned the continent, reached the Arctic, and traded round the Horn to China. Many of the great rivers and lakes of the North and West carry the names of the company’s servants as the only memorial so far accorded them: Pond, Frobisher, Mackenzie, Thompson and Fraser are merely the best remembered of perhaps the most remarkable group of associates that Canada has seen. “...accurate, magnificently organized, sparely written...one of the finest works of Canadian history I have ever read...These men have the most marvellous characters who ever founded and operated a business enterprise in North America.”—Hugh MacLennan, award-winning Canadian author and professor of English at McGill University
