This book was released on 2010 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family, determined to honor the bicentennial of their founding ancestor's death by discovering everything possible about his life, opened burial plots in the hope of recovering DNA for genealogical tracing. What began as a scientific inquiry into African origins rapidly evolved into an interdisciplinary collaboration between historians, literary analysts, geographers, genealogists, anthropologists, political philosophers, genomic biologists, and, perhaps most revealingly, a poet. Their common goal has been to reconstruct the life of an extraordinary African American and to assay its implications for the sprawling, troubled eighteenth-century world of racial exploitation over which he triumphed. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence of the early history of African Americans in New England is found in the many old cemeteries and burial grounds in the region, often in hidden or largely forgotten locations. This unique work covers the burial sites of African Americans--both enslaved and free--in each of the New England states, and uncovers how they came to their final resting places. The lives of well known early African Americans are discussed, including Venture Smith and Elizabeth Freeman, as well as the lives of many ordinary individuals--military veterans, business men and women, common laborers and children. The author's examination of burial sites and grave markers reveals clues that help document the lives of black New Englanders from the 1640s to the early 1900s.

Book Synopsis Athenia Torpedoed by : Francis M Carroll
Download or read book Athenia Torpedoed written by Francis M Carroll and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just hours after World War II was declared, Germany struck its first blow, firing without warning on the passenger liner Athenia. The British ship was loaded with Americans, Canadians, and Europeans attempting to cross the Atlantic before the outbreak of war. As the ship sank, 1,306 were rescued but 112 people were lost, including thirty Americans. This account of the disaster, based on new research, tells a dramatic story of tragedy and triumph, as historian Francis Carroll chronicles the survivors' experiences and explains how the incident shaped policy in the U.S., UK, and Canada. For Britain, it was seen as a violation of international law and convoys were sent to protect shipping. In Canada, Athenia's sinking rallied support to go to war. In the United States, it exposed Germany as a serious threat and changed public opinion enough to allow the country to sell munitions and supplies to Britain and France.

Book Synopsis The Corsairs of Saint-Malo by : Henning Hillmann
Download or read book The Corsairs of Saint-Malo written by Henning Hillmann and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western Europe rose in global power during the early modern period as overseas expansion opened new trade routes. At the same time, intense rivalries pitted European states against one another in recurrent wars. Henning Hillmann examines the merchant community of Saint-Malo, Brittany, a key port in the French Atlantic economy, to shed light on the local networks that linked commerce and conflict in early modern Europe. Hillmann traces the development of Saint-Malo and the social structure of its merchant elite from the 1680s through the onset of the French Revolution. He pinpoints the role of privateering, showing how it enabled local merchant communities to secure their hold on established trades, seize new opportunities, and withstand the threats of armed conflict. In wartime, rulers commissioned ship-owning traders to fit out vessels as corsairs to raid enemy shipping. Within a mercantilist worldview, this state-sanctioned private war at sea aligned the interests of local elites and the royal government. Locally, within Saint-Malo, the partnerships that merchant elites formed in their privateering ventures gave rise to a cohesive network that held their community together amid outside conflicts. Combining rich descriptions of privateering campaigns with quantitative network analysis of partnership ties over more than a century, The Corsairs of Saint-Malo offers a new understanding of the local organizational foundations of early modern capitalist development.

Book Synopsis Cartner on the International Law of the Shipmaster by : John A. C. Cartner
Download or read book Cartner on the International Law of the Shipmaster written by John A. C. Cartner and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book rethinks and rewrites the previous edition. It categorises simply the nine interactive legal duties of the shipmaster, analysing and relating them to laws and conventions within a single volume. Cartner on the International Law of the Shipmaster contends that command depends on decision-making, and that shipmasters are not provided sufficient, timely, relevant, and pertinent information for command decisions. The book proposes voyage planning follow the spacecraft model of the USA's National Aeronautics and Space Administration, providing readers with a metric for command. It constructively criticises the conventions and management and is aimed at reducing catastrophes by focusing on the hitherto elusive human factor in the shipmaster. Cartner proposes that command at sea be its own profession and discipline with those called to it specifically trained in its intricacies; he argues that current ships are not designed to be command-worthy or security-worthy and that management should reorder its relationships with shipmasters as tactical managers afloat. The insights the book provides are an invaluable aid to decision making for the modern civil commander and anyone association with this pivotal and essential profession. This book is a necessary reference and guide for shipmasters, technologists, naval architects, regulators, underwriters, students, practitioners and courts of maritime law and command worldwide.
