Book excerpt: Putting the cult back in cult fiction, this is a darkly witty and sharply questioning debut A chilling vision of a contemporary USA where the sinister Church of America is destroying lives. Our cynical protagonist, sixteen-year-old Vivian Apple, is awaiting the fated 'Rapture' - or rather the lack of it. Her evangelical parents have been in the Church's thrall for too long, and she's looking forward to getting them back. Except that when Vivian arrives home the day after the supposed 'Rapture', her parents are gone. All that is left are two holes in the ceiling... Viv is determined to carry on as normal, but when she starts to suspect that her parents might still be alive, she realises she must uncover the truth. Joined by Peter, a boy claiming to know the real whereabouts of the Church, and Edie, a heavily pregnant Believer who has been 'left behind', they embark on a road trip across America. Encountering freak weather, roving 'Believer' gangs and a strange teenage group calling themselves the 'New Orphans', Viv soon begins to realise that the Rapture was just the beginning.

Stranded in a city on the verge of complete panic, and faced with a society in an ever-increasing state of breakdown, Vivian and her friend Harp don't even know where to begin looking for Peter. But then a tip leads them to Los Angeles, and the somewhat unlikely location of the Chateau Marmont hotel. Vivian must save the day - or she'll lose everything worth living for a second time...

God told Ethan that he and his three daughters would travel with His four emissaries and reveal treasures which would be a test for the Gentile world. Ethan believes they will be in nations that he was sent with one of God's angels. It will be an around-the-world trip, and one nation is still a mystery! The only deadline was given by Ethan's wife, "Have Lyndsay and Alicia back in time to register for their college classes." Come along on this around-the-world mission and meet kings, queens, princes, princesses, and other world leaders. Visit distant lands and, more importantly, meet the people that live there. These are the people to whom God sent His emissaries. They are the real treasure in a fallen world. The challenge for the Sayers is that the emissaries are the Dragons of the Apocalypse, and they are to ride these dragons across oceans, mountains, and over hostile countries. Ethan Sayer has looked at pioneers of early flight as his guides to accomplish his mission. Ethan feels an urgency that his oldest daughter does not share. She wants to enjoy the journey, but Ethan feels he must complete the work as quickly as possible. Join this family as they experience a world full of joy and sometimes sorrow. They will make friends with great and small alike, but it is not all blissful, but that is life.

Book excerpt: All that Pearl knows can be encapsulated in one word: Seed. It is the isolated community that she was born into. It is the land that she sows and reaps. It is the center of her family and everything that means home. And it is all kept under the watchful eye of Papa S. At fifteen years old, Pearl is finally old enough to be chosen as Papa S.'s companion. She feels excitement . . . and surprising trepidation that she cannot explain. The arrival of a new family into the Seed community—particularly the teenage son, Ellis—only complicates the life and lifestyle that Pearl has depended upon as safe and constant. Ellis is compelling, charming, and worldly, and he seems to have a lot of answers to questions Pearl has never thought to ask. But as Pearl digs to the roots of the truth, only she can decide what she will allow to come to the surface. Lisa Heathfield's suspenseful, scintillating debut features a compelling voice that combines blithe naïveté, keen observation, and sincere emotion.

Plucking Ethan from his car, God would bring Ethan before his throne and ask him to go one more time. Where would he send him? Ethan Sayer and his three daughters will travel around the world with his emissaries. Who are these emissaries? They are dragons. That is not all. God assigns an angel to take Ethan back in time. He is to be a witness to five saints in history. These saints singlehandedly changes the course of history of the nations in which they live. God would break Ethan’s heart for the peoples of the world. He walked and lived among them. He would see kingdoms rise and fall. What is the purpose of his trip through time? When Ethan is returned to the current time, he is shocked to find that he had only been gone for a few hours not the months and years that he has witnessed. Now he must convince his wife, daughters and a US senator that he is not crazy. This is a test for the nations. The first treasure will be revealed by the angel, but they must be told of it beforehand to prove it is from God. Politics and family dynamics crash into their lives. Together, they will uncover the four remaining treasures hidden in the nations that Ethan visited in time. With little else to guide them. How will the Sayers find them? This first book will tell the story of these saints, the birth of the dragons and the training that allows them to fly their dragons around the world!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When pandemic meets politics the US fractures. Unite to survive. The human epidermis deterioration virus (HEDV) has obliterated the population. Billions have died worldwide. The lucky few who survived are now faced with rising racial tensions and white supremacist armies determined to eradicate all people of color and anyone who tries to stand in their way, including Scot Jameson’s mostly white community. Left for dead, Scot is rescued by a young black girl, Coby, and together they join an integrated community called The Orchard. There they meet Kimberly Tomlinson a charismatic and brilliant young leader who becomes a surrogate mother to Coby and confidant to Scot. The Orchard is soon destroyed by an attack from a rival white supremacist army, Right Nation. While Coby escapes, Scot and Kimberly are both taken prisoner. Separated, Scot and Kimberly must fight to survive, escape, and reunite with Coby. Kimberly’s efforts put her on a collision course with a ring of cruel human traffickers specializing in the exploitation of women of color. Scot, on his own journey with various allies and adversaries, must confront his own biases, ignorance, privilege, and prejudices. As they gather other surviving communities together in an uneasy alliance, the survivors of the The Orchard try to find a way to combat hate, defeat Right Nation, and put an end to the fever of white nationalism. "The writing is some of the best I've seen in a long time, and the story line is unlike anything I've ever read before . . . . . . it's not so hard to imagine something like this actually happening. Highly Recommended." By Sheri Hoyte for Reader Views. Full review: readerviews.com/reviewneillreapermoon NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR - CONTENT WARNING & NOTE ON RACIST LANGUAGE: One of the most frequent comments from readers and reviewers has been around a "content warning," for Reaper Moon. It's a fair request. The book is far more violent and dark than anything I ever have written, but part of the decision to include racist language, racially motivated violence, was to depict in an unfiltered way the trauma of racism and white supremacy. Even if Reaper Moon is built on a Sci-Fi premise, some of the content might be closer to a horror story. That said, the violence of white supremacy, from slavery, to lynchings, to police shootings of people of color is nothing short of a horror story and I felt that in at least one of my books wherein I focus on these issues, I would not pull back from the terror, pain, and trauma of racism. After all, people of color, throughout history, have not been able to opt-out of oppression and the violence—physical, emotional, and psychological—that it entails. That said, I know the relationship between reader and book is an intimate one. I don't hold it against anyone if they choose not to step into the world of Reaper Moon—only that they acknowledge that is their privilege not to. I understand though. At times there is enough horror in real life (and victims certainly don't need to relive it). I try to balance that reality with the need to bear witness to the suffering inflicted on others who otherwise are hidden by the structures of marginalization. Potential readers have also challenged me on whether or not this book just turns the "hate" around and is "racist" in itself or even unfair to white people. I'd say this much: one of the challenges of writing this book was to reflect the humanity of all the characters even those whom I disagreed with down to the core of my soul. The first few drafts of Reaper Moon read very much like a fight between "bad guys" and "good guys." Many characters came off like cartoons, flat, one dimensional. The bad guys were all bad and good guys all good. No nuance, no complexity. It wasn't good writing, it didn't make for good reading, and it sounded polemical. It didn't challenge anyone's assumptions or thinking. So before I did further revisions I spent a month researching white supremacists, watching their films, visiting their websites, reading their literature. I wasn't swayed in the least by the content but what I did sense was that there was terrible trauma (often childhood) and real self loathing behind the racism, fear, and hate I heard from these white men (and some women). I learned from watching that racist people hold on to their hatred of others because without it, they'd have to sit with their own hate for themselves. It's sad. After that, I went back to try to incorporate those realities into my depictions of the white supremacists in the book. I ended up adding 15 chapters and a number of characters! I don't know if it is possible to make a white supremacist sympathetic, but I felt obliged to represent their humanity, since in the end, that is the only thing that will get us out of this mess—recognizing we're all human and that there is inherent dignity, worth, and value in that identity. It is when we're failing to see that, that prejudice begins and hate takes root. Getting into white supremacists’ heads also revealed to me the truism that the lower an individual's self esteem, the higher likelihood they will claim their race, their nation, their religion is superior to all others. It reminded me that although the structures of racism are social and it is perpetuated by policy, it roots lie in the individual psyche and the work to dismantle it takes place at the inter- and intra-personal levels, in addition to social and policy arenas. We certainly don't lack for entry points to jump in and contribute to change.

Book excerpt: What’s it like when the man you married is already married to God? asks Pastors’ Wives, an often surprising yet always emotionally true first novel set in a world most of us know only from the outside. Lisa Takeuchi Cullen’s debut novel Pastors’ Wives follows three women whose lives converge and intertwine at a Southern evangelical megachurch. Ruthie follows her Wall Street husband from New York to Magnolia, a fictional suburb of Atlanta, when he hears a calling to serve at a megachurch called Greenleaf. Reeling from the death of her mother, Ruthie suffers a crisis of faith—in God, in her marriage, and in herself. Candace is Greenleaf’s “First Lady,” a force of nature who’ll stop at nothing to protect her church and her superstar husband. Ginger, married to Candace’s son, struggles to play dutiful wife and mother while burying her calamitous past. All their roads collide in one chaotic event that exposes their true selves. Inspired by Cullen’s reporting as a staff writer for Time magazine, Pastors’ Wives is a dramatic portrayal of the private lives of pastors’ wives, caught between the demands of faith, marriage, duty, and love.

Book excerpt: Shaun of the Dead meets Dumplin' in this bitingly funny YA thriller about a kickass group of teens battling a ravenous group of zombies. In the next few hours, one of three things will happen. 1--We'll be rescued (unlikely) 2--We'll freeze to death (maybe) 3--We'll be eaten by thin and athletic zombies (odds: excellent) Vivian Ellenshaw is fat, but she knows she doesn't need to lose weight, so she's none too happy to find herself forced into a weight-loss camp's van with her ex-best friend, Allie, a meathead jock who can barely drive, and the camp owner's snobby son. And when they arrive at Camp Featherlite at the start of the worst blizzard in the history of Flagstaff, Arizona, it's clear that something isn't right. Vee barely has a chance to meet the other members of her pod, all who seem as unhappy to be at Featherlite as she does, when a camper goes missing down by the lake. Then she spots something horrifying outside in the snow. Something...that isn't human. Plus, the camp's supposed "miracle cure" for obesity just seems fishy, and Vee and her fellow campers know they don't need to be cured. Of anything. Even worse, it's not long before Camp Featherlite's luxurious bungalows are totally overrun with zombies. What starts out as a mission to unravel the camp's secrets turns into a desperate fight for survival--and not all of the Featherlite campers will make it out alive. A satirical blend of horror, body positivity, and humor, Kelly deVos's witty, biting novel proves that everyone deserves to feel validated, and taking down the evil enterprise determined to dehumanize you is a good place to start.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on comparative literature, ritual and performance studies, and the history of asceticism, Derek Krueger explores how early Christian writers came to view writing as salvific, as worship through the production of art. Exploring the emergence of new and distinctly Christian ideas about authorship in late antiquity, Writing and Holiness probes saints' lives and hymns produced in the Greek East to reveal how the ascetic call to imitate Christ's humility rendered artistic and literary creativity problematic. In claiming authority and power, hagiographers appeared to violate the saintly practices that they sought to promote. Christian writers meditated within their texts on these tensions and ultimately developed a new set of answers to the question "What is an author?" Each of the texts examined here used writing as a technique for the representation of holiness. Some are narrative representations of saints that facilitate veneration; others are collections of accounts of miracles, composed to publicize a shrine. Rather than viewing an author's piety as a barrier to historical inquiry, Krueger argues that consideration of writing as a form of piety opens windows onto new modes of practice. He interprets Christian authors as participants in the religious system they described, as devotees, monastics, and faithful emulators of the saints, and he shows how their literary practice integrated authorship into other Christian practices, such as asceticism, devotion, pilgrimage, liturgy, and sacrifice. In considering the distinctly literary contributions to the formation of Christian piety in late antiquity, Writing and Holiness uncovers Christian literary theories with implications for both Eastern and Western medieval literatures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maternity in the Post-Apocalypse: Novelistic Revisions of Dystopian Motherhood deconstructs the ways in which women novelists have reconceived the post-apocalyptic genre in recent decades through narratives centered on heroic maternal characters. These writers have placed midwives, pregnant women, and mothers at the forefront of their novels, transforming them from the hapless victims of male oppressors to protagonists who are instrumental in transforming the post-apocalyptic social landscape from one that attempts to reconstruct a patriarchal past to one that safeguards, validates, and even lauds maternity as a form of empowerment. In a novelistic future devastated landscape in which human civilizations are shattered and waver at the brink of extinction, women who embody facets of maternity are taking the reins of rebuilding human societies by overturning patriarchal assumptions of femininity, reclaiming intersectional autonomy, and (re)visioning the possibilities for a declining anthropocene.
