Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jackknife and bootstrap are the most popular data-resampling meth ods used in statistical analysis. The resampling methods replace theoreti cal derivations required in applying traditional methods (such as substitu tion and linearization) in statistical analysis by repeatedly resampling the original data and making inferences from the resamples. Because of the availability of inexpensive and fast computing, these computer-intensive methods have caught on very rapidly in recent years and are particularly appreciated by applied statisticians. The primary aims of this book are (1) to provide a systematic introduction to the theory of the jackknife, the bootstrap, and other resampling methods developed in the last twenty years; (2) to provide a guide for applied statisticians: practitioners often use (or misuse) the resampling methods in situations where no theoretical confirmation has been made; and (3) to stimulate the use of the jackknife and bootstrap and further devel opments of the resampling methods. The theoretical properties of the jackknife and bootstrap methods are studied in this book in an asymptotic framework. Theorems are illustrated by examples. Finite sample properties of the jackknife and bootstrap are mostly investigated by examples and/or empirical simulation studies. In addition to the theory for the jackknife and bootstrap methods in problems with independent and identically distributed (Li.d.) data, we try to cover, as much as we can, the applications of the jackknife and bootstrap in various complicated non-Li.d. data problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The state-of-the-art of multivariate analysis in sensory science is described in this volume. Both methods for aggregated and individual sensory profiles are discussed. Processes and results are presented in such a way that they can be understood not only by statisticians but also by experienced sensory panel leaders and users of sensory analysis. The techniques presented are focused on examples and interpretation rather than on the technical aspects, with an emphasis on new and important methods which are possibly not so well known to scientists in the field. Important features of the book are discussions on the relationship among the methods with a strong accent on the connection between problems and methods. All procedures presented are described in relation to sensory data and not as completely general statistical techniques. Sensory scientists, applied statisticians, chemometricians, those working in consumer science, food scientists and agronomers will find this book of value.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical and accessible introduction to the bootstrap method——newly revised and updated Over the past decade, the application of bootstrap methods to new areas of study has expanded, resulting in theoretical and applied advances across various fields. Bootstrap Methods, Second Edition is a highly approachable guide to the multidisciplinary, real-world uses of bootstrapping and is ideal for readers who have a professional interest in its methods, but are without an advanced background in mathematics. Updated to reflect current techniques and the most up-to-date work on the topic, the Second Edition features: The addition of a second, extended bibliography devoted solely to publications from 1999–2007, which is a valuable collection of references on the latest research in the field A discussion of the new areas of applicability for bootstrap methods, including use in the pharmaceutical industry for estimating individual and population bioequivalence in clinical trials A revised chapter on when and why bootstrap fails and remedies for overcoming these drawbacks Added coverage on regression, censored data applications, P-value adjustment, ratio estimators, and missing data New examples and illustrations as well as extensive historical notes at the end of each chapter With a strong focus on application, detailed explanations of methodology, and complete coverage of modern developments in the field, Bootstrap Methods, Second Edition is an indispensable reference for applied statisticians, engineers, scientists, clinicians, and other practitioners who regularly use statistical methods in research. It is also suitable as a supplementary text for courses in statistics and resampling methods at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels.

Book excerpt: This book is an outgrowth of research done by Dr. Gamt Dijsterhuis for his doctoral thesis at the University of Leiden. However, there are also contributions by several other authors, as well, including Eeke van der Burg, John Gower, Pieter Punter, Els van den Broek, and Margo Flipsen. This book discusses the use of Multivariate Data Analysis to solve problems in sensory and consumer research. More specifically the focus is on the analysis of the reactions to certain characteristics of food products, which are in the form of scores given to attributes perceived in the food stimuli; the analyses are multivariate; and the senses are mainly the senses of smell and taste. The four main themes covered in the book are: (1) Individual Differences, (2) Measurement Levels; (3) Sensory-Instrumental Relations, and (4) Time-Intensity Data Analysis. The statistical methods discussed include Principle Components Analysis, Generalized Procrustes Analysis, Multidimensional Scaling, Redundancy Analysis, and Canonical Analysis. This book will be a value to all professionals and students working in the sensory studies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive overview of the internationalisation of correspondence analysis Correspondence Analysis: Theory, Practice and New Strategies examines the key issues of correspondence analysis, and discusses the new advances that have been made over the last 20 years. The main focus of this book is to provide a comprehensive discussion of some of the key technical and practical aspects of correspondence analysis, and to demonstrate how they may be put to use. Particular attention is given to the history and mathematical links of the developments made. These links include not just those major contributions made by researchers in Europe (which is where much of the attention surrounding correspondence analysis has focused) but also the important contributions made by researchers in other parts of the world. Key features include: A comprehensive international perspective on the key developments of correspondence analysis. Discussion of correspondence analysis for nominal and ordinal categorical data. Discussion of correspondence analysis of contingency tables with varying association structures (symmetric and non-symmetric relationship between two or more categorical variables). Extensive treatment of many of the members of the correspondence analysis family for two-way, three-way and multiple contingency tables. Correspondence Analysis offers a comprehensive and detailed overview of this topic which will be of value to academics, postgraduate students and researchers wanting a better understanding of correspondence analysis. Readers interested in the historical development, internationalisation and diverse applicability of correspondence analysis will also find much to enjoy in this book.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the published Proceedings of the joint meeting of GUM92 and the 7th International Workshop on Statistical Modelling, held in Munich, Germany from 13 to 17 July 1992. The meeting aimed to bring together researchers interested in the development and applications of generalized linear modelling in GUM and those interested in statistical modelling in its widest sense. This joint meeting built upon the success of previous workshops and GUM conferences. Previous GUM conferences were held in London and Lancaster, and a joint GUM Conference/4th Modelling Workshop was held in Trento. (The Proceedings of previous GUM conferences/Statistical Modelling Workshops are available as numbers 14 , 32 and 57 of the Springer Verlag series of Lecture Notes in Statistics). Workshops have been organized in Innsbruck, Perugia, Vienna, Toulouse and Utrecht. (Proceedings of the Toulouse Workshop appear as numbers 3 and 4 of volume 13 of the journal Computational Statistics and Data Analysis). Much statistical modelling is carried out using GUM, as is apparent from many of the papers in these Proceedings. Thus the Programme Committee were also keen on encouraging papers which addressed problems which are not only of practical importance but which are also relevant to GUM or other software development. The Programme Committee requested both theoretical and applied papers. Thus there are papers in a wide range of practical areas, such as ecology, breast cancer remission and diabetes mortality, banking and insurance, quality control, social mobility, organizational behaviour.
