Download or read book Texas Task Force 1 written by Bud Force and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trained for ground, water, and air missions throughout Texas and the nation, Texas Task Force 1 serves as the state’s primary search and rescue team and as one of twenty-eight federal teams in the national urban search and rescue system. Founded in 1997, this elite team has been dispatched for state and national emergencies, probing the devastation at Ground Zero and saving lives on the Gulf Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Texas Task Force 1’s more than four hundred highly trained members come from sixty organizations throughout Texas and include firefighters, canine handlers, medical specialists and doctors, heavy equipment operators, structural engineers, and others. Photographer Bud Force gives us an intimate picture of Texas Task Force 1 at work as he follows the team on their major deployments and documents their specialized equipment and training, including time spent at the unique facility known as Disaster City. The result is a lively mix of history, interviews, and photographs that paints a fascinating portrait of these courageous people—and their canine partners—who place themselves in danger in order to save others. “There’s a feeling in the room when I walk in and I see the faces of the other responders I work with. My stress level drops because I know that whatever happens, we’ll figure it out and do what we need to do to get the job done. I know that because I know the people in that room can do it.”--Susann Brown, Responder “The principle of helping others is as fundamental to the search and rescue members I know as is breathing.”--Matthew Minson, Responder

Book Synopsis Rescue Robotics by : Satoshi Tadokoro
Download or read book Rescue Robotics written by Satoshi Tadokoro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rescue Robotics presents the most significant findings of the DDT Project on robots and systems for urban search and rescue. This project was launched by the Japanese government in 2002 with the aim of applying a wide variety of robotics technologies to find a solution to the problem of disaster response, especially urban search and rescue in large-scale earthquakes. From 2002 to 2007 more than 100 researchers took part in the DDT Project, coming from a wide spectrum of research and development to make up four research groups: Aerial Robot Systems MU (Mission Unit), Information Infrastructure System MU, In-Rubble Robot System MU, and On-Rubble Robot System MU. This book discusses their development and testing of various robotic systems and technologies such as serpentine robots, traced vehicles, intelligent human interface and data processing, as well as analysing and verifying the results of these experiments. Rescue Robotics will be of interest to researchers and students, but will also prove useful for emergency response personnel. It offers an insight into the state of the art of rescue robotics and its readers will benefit from a knowledge of the advanced technologies involved in this field.

Book Synopsis Urban Recycling and the Search for Sustainable Community Development by : Adam S. Weinberg
Download or read book Urban Recycling and the Search for Sustainable Community Development written by Adam S. Weinberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-24 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More Americans recycle than vote. And most do so to improve their communities and the environment. But do recycling programs advance social, economic, and environmental goals? To answer this, three sociologists with expertise in urban and environmental planning have conducted the first major study of urban recycling. They compare four types of programs in the Chicago metropolitan area: a community-based drop-off center, a municipal curbside program, a recycling industrial park, and a linkage program. Their conclusion, admirably elaborated, is that recycling can realize sustainable community development, but that current programs achieve few benefits for the communities in which they are located. The authors discover that the history of recycling mirrors many other urban reforms. What began in the 1960s as a sustainable community enterprise has become a commodity-based, profit-driven industry. Large private firms, using public dollars, have chased out smaller nonprofit and family-owned efforts. Perhaps most troubling is that this process was not born of economic necessity. Rather, as the authors show, socially oriented programs are actually more viable than profit-focused systems. This finding raises unsettling questions about the prospects for any sort of sustainable local development in the globalizing economy. Based on a decade of research, this is the first book to fully explore the range of impacts that recycling generates in our communities. It presents recycling as a tantalizing case study of the promises and pitfalls of community development. It also serves as a rich account of how the state and private interests linked to the global economy alter the terrain of local neighborhoods.
