Book Synopsis Innovating Energy Access for Remote Areas: Discovering Untapped Resources by : Schäfer, Martina
Download or read book Innovating Energy Access for Remote Areas: Discovering Untapped Resources written by Schäfer, Martina and published by Universitätsverlag der TU Berlin. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume centers on the idea that innovative approaches for energy access can work with previously underutilized or unrecognized resources, as this may lead to circumstances for the development of successful and sustainable energy programs. Such untapped resources may be seen in the discovering of synergies in areas such as pre-existing service infrastructures, supply chain and value chain management, natural resource availability, financing schemes, and leap frog technologies. Additionally, decentralized approaches can contribute to climate change adaptation measures and increase resiliency for vulnerable communities. Of course small-scale solutions have clear limitations in regard to global climate, and it is important to consider how far they can extend and aggregate impact. This book assembles a selection of articles, collected from the 2014 Energy Access Conference at UC Berkeley, aiming to consider technical, financial, human, institutional, and natural resource capital.

Book excerpt: The author has attempted an integrated approach to the literature review. The approach has allowed her to identify and summarise separate studies that are relevant to the internationalisation of the curriculum and reach some overall conclusions. The review of the selected literature represents a 'snapshot' of a process that is changing. Moreover this review examines primarily North American literature in English. [p2, ed].

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indeed, the sound performance of the construction sector, strong investment in public works, restored consumer confidence and a recovery in the hydrocarbons industry enabled Colombia’s economy to regain dynamism and end 2013 with growth of 4.7%. Attracting a record $16.36bn in foreign direct investment in 2013, an 8.2% rise on the previous year, the Andean economy assured its spot among the region’s top investment targets. As in previous years, hydrocarbons attracted the lion’s share of FDI to the country, accounting for 81.6% of the total. While GDP grew by just 2.9% in the first quarter of 2014, the central bank forecasts growth of 4.3% for the year. With the possibility of a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the next few years could see economic performance enhanced by improved agricultural and energy outputs, as well as increased FDI inflows.

Download or read book Argentine Youth written by The World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Argentina’s youth—6.7 million between the ages of 15 and 24—are an important, but to a certain extent untapped, resource for development. Over 2 million (31 percent) have already engaged in risky behaviors, and another 1 million (15 percent) are exposed to risk factors that are correlated with eventual risky behaviors. This totals 46 percent of youth at some form of risk. This book addresses the risks faced by youth in Argentina such as low education attainment, unemployment, teenage pregnancy, use and abuse of drugs and alcohol, becoming victims of crime, and low level of civic participation, as well as the policy options for addressing them. The chance of reducing the numbers of youth at risk over the long term is greatest by focusing policies and programs on the individual (improving life skills, self-esteem), on key relationships (parents, caregivers, peers), on communities (schools, neighborhoods, police), and on societal laws and norms. Specific recommendations were developed during consultations with government counterparts.

Book Synopsis Hazards in a Fickle Environment: Bangladesh by : C.E. Haque
Download or read book Hazards in a Fickle Environment: Bangladesh written by C.E. Haque and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evolved from a collaborative research project between the University of Manitoba, Canada and Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, which commenced in 1984 to study the problems of river channel migration, rural population displacement and land relocation in Bangladesh. The study was sponsored by the International Development Research Center (IDRC), based in Ottawa, Canada. It was through this project that I started my journey into disaster research more than thirteen years ago with basically an applied problem of massive magnitude in Bangladesh. I spent two- and-a half-years, in two stages, in Bangladesh's riparian villages to collect the empirical data for this study. Then the growing disaster discourse throughout the 1980s, especially its conceptual and theoretical areas, drew me in further, gluing my interest to these issues. In the 1990s, during my research and teaching at Brandon University, Canada, I realized that, despite the large body of literature on natural disasters, there was no work that synthesized the approaches to nature-triggered disasters in a comprehensive form, with sufficient empirical substantiation. In addition, despite the great deal of attention given to disasters in Bangladesh, I found no detailed reference book on the topic. Natural hazards and disasters, in my view, should be studied under a holistic framework encompassing the natural environment, society and individuals. Overreaction to the limitations of technocratic-scientific approaches-the control and prevention of physical events through specialized knowledge and skills-has resulted in a call for "taking the naturalness out of natural disasters.
