Sobresalen los análisis puramente filológicos y sobre todo los relacionados con el aprendizaje del inglés como segunda lengua. Por eso, destacan estudios que contemplan rasgos morfológicos, léxicos o sintácticos. Sin embargo, el mayor número de participaciones hace referencia al ya citado aprendizaje del inglés como L2, tanto desde el análisis de materiales, como desde la práctica oral o escrita. Las contribuciones literarias ofrecen una evaluación teórica, formal e interpretativa de distintas tendencias desde perspectivas tanto interdisciplinares como interculturales. Cronológicamente los estudios abarcan textos desde el siglo XVIII hasta nuestros días, con un acento especial en los autores más contemporáneos y en el género narrativo. En general estos estudios se fijan en textos concretos y los analizan desde perspectivas culturales, sociológicas o psicológicas. Pero abundan menos las aproximaciones desde la teoría literaria, desde la técnica narrativa o, como tal vez cabría esperar al tratarse de estudiantes tan jóvenes, desde la aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías. The author further observes that translated signs are not only intelligible for target audiences, but also work together as a "theatre of consciousness" or a "theatre of controversy" which the author views as powered by Charles S. Peirce's three categories of Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness. This book presents the virtual community of translators as emotional, dynamical, intellectual but not infallible semioticians. They translate text-signs from one language and culture into another, thus creating an innovative sign-milieu packed with intuitive, dynamic, and changeable signs. Translators produce fleeting and fallible text-translations, with obvious errors caused by ignorance or misguided knowledge. Text-signs are translatable, yet there is no such thing as a perfect or "final" translation. And without the ongoing creating of translated signs of all kinds, there would be no novelty, no vagueness, no manipulation of texts and - for that matter - no semiosis.

Depending on the audience, the medium it is published in and of course the genre of the text, there are different strategies needed to translate texts. The three texts which are to discuss here, a set of instructions, an advert and an encyclopedia entry, are from different genres and therefore need to be handled differently in a translation. The purpose and the readership of a target text strongly influence the way a source text has to be translated. Hervey, Higgins and Longridge (1996:155) claim that “target texts are purpose-made texts, their manner of formulation heavily influenced, both strategically and in detail, by who and what they are intended for.” For all three of the discussed text genres, it is advisable for the translator to do some research on the specific topic and read a few parallel texts. Hervey, Higgins and Longridge (1996: 157) recommend translators to “do not produce target texts without having first built up a knowledge of the style of specimen target language texts in the appropriate language.”
