Book excerpt: Military Bases: Historical Perspectives, Contemporary Challenges presents the results of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on Political and social impact of military bases: Historical Perspectives, Contemporary Challenges, an event that took place in Lisbon, December 2007. The ARW, a joint Portuguese-Ukrainian organization, was the final result of earlier collaboration between several researchers from different countries on the issue of military bases. The intention was to go beyond the traditional international relations approach and discuss military bases from more than the aspect of their strategic value. This work is divided into three separate sections. The first of these deals with the Cold War period, the second section is about the political and social impact of military bases. The third and final section addresses the issue of military basing in the greater Black Sea area. In each of these sections, the issue of military bases is studied and analyzed from several different theoretical and methodological perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereignty is a key factor to consider when studying the Mexico-United States relationship. During most of the twentieth century, as a result of the new character of the Mexican post-revolutionary regime, there was a decoupling between the state’s maximalist discourse on sovereignty, and its practice. Sovereignty as an undifferentiated whole does not exist; it should instead be disaggregated into the myriad issue areas in which it is constantly negotiated. Focusing on a tripartite classification relating to the construction of Mexico’s sovereignty towards its northern neighbor since 1920, this volume illustrates how Mexico’s sovereignty has varied not only according to the times, but also according to the issues at stake. In doing so, Arturo Santa-Cruz comprehensively covers a variety of issues in the bilateral agenda such as drug trafficking, electoral observation, human rights, investment, migration, security, and trade, as well as some defining moments in the relationship, such as the 1923 US granting of recognition to the Mexican post-revolutionary regime, the 1938 oil nationalization, the 1982 debt crisis, and the 1995 financial bailout. These diverse cases, analyzed through an original analytical approach, capture sovereignty’s multifocal meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present collection, individual authors address both the question of relations between Poland and Spain and issues related to the role of both countries in international relations, especially in European politics. This initiative is a valuable one, particularly since the literature on this subject, both Polish and international especially – pays little attention to these two countries (and in particular relations between them). This is all the more surprising as both are among the six largest countries of Europe. A further major strength of this publication is its pairing of several texts that though on similar subjects, view those subjects from different perspectives. This pairing approach is taken on the topics of security policy, economic crisis, Polish refugees in Spain and Spanish refugees in Poland and the foreign policies of both countries. The articles themselves are concise, factual, devoid of digression and edited in accordance with the principles of academic literature. This book should be an interesting read for political scientists, scholars of European studies, international relations analysts, as well as students of Iberian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Global Economic History documents and interprets the development of economic history as a global discipline from the later nineteenth century to the present day. Exploring the normative and relativistic nature of different schools and traditions of thought, this handbook not only examines current paradigmatic western approaches, but also those conceived in less open societies and in varied economic, political and cultural contexts. In doing so, this book clears the way for greater critical understanding and a more genuinely global approach to economic history. This handbook brings together leading international contributors in order to systematically address cultural and intellectual traditions around the globe. Many of these are exposed for consideration for the first time in English. The chapters explore dominant ideas and historiographical trends, and open them up to critical transnational perspectives. This volume is essential reading for both academics and students in economic and social history. As this field of study is very much a bridge between the social sciences and humanities, the issues examined in the book will also have relevance for those seeking to understand the evolution of other academic disciplines under the pressures of varied economic, political and cultural circumstances, on both national and global scales.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Colombia's illegal drug trade--and of the extreme violence it created--describes how in the late 1960s narcotics traffickers from the United States convinced Colombians who had no previous involvement in the drug trade to grow marijuana for export to America. By the early '70s, foreign (mostly American) traffickers began requesting cocaine. This book focuses on the decades of crime and violence the illegal drug trade brought to Colombia and how this social upset was ended in the early 2000s. Six chapters detail the Medellin and Cali cartels' war against the Colombian government, the revolutionary guerrillas' war against the government, the war that paramilitary groups conducted against the guerrillas, and the way in which the government finally put a stop to the cartel-financed bloodshed. In conclusion, the author assesses Colombia's progress and prospects since the end of the violence claimed the lives of some 300,000 between 1975 and 2008.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other analyses which aim to explain the notion of national security in Mexico and at the same time address the security challenges facing the country, this short text describes the distinction between national, internal and public security in Mexico. It is the first book to provide detailed analysis on Mexico’s security policy and its long-term consequences. Former Mexican government official Augustin Maciel-Padilla contends that the absence of a clear understanding of the complexities and sophistication of the concept of security has the potential to aggravate security conditions in Mexico. Achieving a proper understanding allows for a better guidance in confronting the grave insecurity facing the country, and for addressing other issues such as human rights, democracy and the country’s international exposure. Maciel-Padilla reasons that Mexico is required to formulate a comprehensive, long-term, security strategy, and with this book he proposes a contribution towards that long-term goal. Understanding Mexico’s Security Conundrum will be essential for scholars, students, and policy makers.
