Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting the importance of the self in optimal functioning, a vast literature on the value of different self-processes is accumulating. Individual research reports, however, frequently present a one-sided view, focusing either on the benefits or the liabilities of the self-process under study. A more complete understanding of both the benefits and liabilities of a self-process is essential because it profoundly shapes the conclusions of existing research and directions of future research. To that end, this special issue brings together leading researchers to present their unique perspectives on the benefits and liabilities of the self-process they study.

Book excerpt: This is an outstanding and unique book about President Trump. There is no other like it. It is filled with research about the greatest president of our time. Since Dr. Fountain is and has been a business-owner-consultant, entrepreneur, business graduate professor, and writer for more than three decades, he has captured the essence of President Donald J. Trump. This book is an excellent educational tool about the president, We the People’s agenda, and the need to return to the thought and actions of our Founding Fathers, rather than misguided ruminations of socialism which is embraced by the Democrat Party. Thank God we are the inheritors of a dynamic republic. The 55 Founders gave their all for the creation of this sovereign nation, and we must not let what they sacrificed be in vain. The choice is clear in 2020. President Trump simply must be reelected, which also includes the election of enough conservative republicans, not fake republicans (F-Rs), in the House so that the president has the assistance he needs to pass meaningful legislation. The survival of this sovereign nation is contingent upon this decision in November 2020.

Book excerpt: With all the enormous resources that are invested in medicine, it is sometimes a mystery why there is so much sickness still in evidence. Our life span, though higher than at any time in history, has now leveled off and has not significantly increased in the last two generations. There is a one-third increase in long-term illness in the last 20 years and a 44% increase in cancer incidence, which are not related to demographic issues. In some modern countries, the level of morbidity (defined as days off work because of sickness) has increased by two thirds in this time. Despite $1 trillion spent on cancer research in 20 years, the "War On Cancer" has recently been pronounced a complete failure by the u. s. President's Cancer Panel. Evidently we still have a long way to go. The goal of "Health for All by the Year 2000" as the World Health Organization has put it, is another forgotten dream. As ever, the answer will be found in breaking out of the old philosophical patterns and discovering the new, as yet unacceptable concepts. The problems of medicine today require a Kuhnian breakthrough into new paradigms, and new ways of thinking. And these new ways will not be mere variations of the old, but radical departures. This book, and the conference upon which it was based, is part of a search for these new pathways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997. This volume is part of the Prentice Hall series- a series of comprehensive textbooks and reference manuals for nurses and other health care professionals. The development of a number of sections in the second edition of this book serves perhaps as an indication of the changes that have occurred in health care education and research over recent years. The emphasis of this text, as in the first edition, is to trace the research process from the initial idea through to dissemination and implementation of findings as appropriate. In so doing, a number of sections have been enlarged and updated. This includes a greater emphasis on some of the ‘planning’ issues in research seen as particularly important given the increased opportunity available for practitioners to take part in funded research projects. From this perspective increased emphasis has been given to acquiring funding for research and working with established systems of ethical approval.

Book excerpt: Insight and intuition might be the most mysterious and fascinating fields of human thinking and problem solving. They are different from standard and analytical problem solving accounts and provide the basis for creative and innovative thinking. Until now they were investigated in separate academic fields with differing tradition. Therefore, this eBook attempts to bridge the gap between both processes and to provide a more integrated perspective. Several experts address the underlying cognitive processes and provide a broad spectrum of new empirical, theoretical, and methodological insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This evidence-to-practice volume deftly analyzes the processes and skills of integrating mental healthcare with primary care, using multiple perspectives to address challenges that often derail these joint efforts. Experts across integrative medicine offer accessible blueprints for smoothly implementing data-based behavioral interventions, from disease management strategies to treatment of psychological problems, into patient-centered, cost-effective integrated care. Coverage highlights training and technology issues, key healthcare constructs that often get lost in translation, and other knowledge necessary to create systems that are rooted in—and contribute to—a robust evidence base. Contributors also provide step-by-step guidelines for integrating behavioral health care delivery in treating cancer, dementia, and chronic pain. Among the topics covered: The epidemiology of medical diseases and associated behavioral risk factors. Provider training: recognizing the relevance of behavioral medicine and the importance of behavioral health consultations and referrals. Screening for behavioral health problems in adult primary care. Health care transformation: the electronic health record. Meeting the care needs of patients with multiple medical conditions. Smoking cessation in the context of integrated care. This depth of clinical guidance makes Behavioral Medicine and Integrated Care an essential reference for practitioners on all sides of the equation, including health psychologists and other professionals in health promotion, disease prevention, psychotherapy and counseling, and primary care medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is premised on a very powerful social/educational concern about college retention rates: one-third of first-year students seriously consider leaving college during their first term, and only half of all students who start college ultimately graduate. This book examines the first year of college from a variety of perspectives to paint a comprehensive picture of the intersecting challenges facing today's students and higher education institutions. Technological advances, increases in college attendance costs, and increasing political pressure on colleges to prove their value have changed the landscape of the first year of college, but researchers have identified new approaches to improve student and institutional success that have shown considerable success and promise. In this comprehensive volume, top educational researchers explore topics of student success, persistence, and retention in the first year of college.
