His towering figure was familiar to researchers in heat transfer and multiphase flow all over the world. He was the founding Editor of the International Journal of Multiphase Flow and the person who defined and promoted the discipline around the journal. The unique community formed in this field during his lifetime gathers every three years for a major conference, the International Conference on Multiphase Flow, that most recent was held in May 2016 in Florence, Italy. This was the first time ever Gad did not attend ICMF. Friends and colleagues from many countries came to Florence to present their personal tributes and scientific papers honoring Gad. Reviewed and edited tributes and scientific papers dedicated to Gad from these memorial sessions comprise the core content of this memorial volume; certain persons who could not participate in the ICMF made later contributions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a clear and comprehensive review of the current status of three-dimensional (3D) digital holographic imaging of phase microscopic objects, with insightful discussions on the positive and negative features of classical, electronic and holographic microscopy. The technical details and results of the restoration of the 3D shapes of red blood cells, bacteria, yeasts, thin films and other micro-objects are presented. The physical background of the method was substantiated by the authors in 1989 and in 1998, the very first digital holographic interference microscope was developed. Clear evidence of the pathological flattened shape of the erythrocytes relevant to different pathologies is given by detailed measurements on the 3D images. Based on the model of the erythrocyte as a liquid-filled, charged, and viscoelastic shell reinforced by skeleton, numerical computations of the equilibrium shapes of human erythrocytes are made, and the results are analyzed and compared to the 3D visualization data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biomechanics aims to explain the mechanics oflife and living. From molecules to organisms, everything must obey the laws of mechanics. Clarification of mechanics clarifies many things. Biomechanics helps us to appreciate life. It sensitizes us to observe nature. It is a tool for design and invention of devices to improve the quality of life. It is a useful tool, a simple tool, a valuable tool, an unavoidable tool. It is a necessary part of biology and engineering. The method of biomechanics is the method of engineering, which consists of observation, experimentation, theorization, validation, and application. To understand any object, we must know its geometry and materials of construc tion, the mechanical properties of the materials involved, the governing natural laws, the mathematical formulation of specific problems and their solutions, and the results of validation. Once understood, one goes on to develop applications. In my plan to present an outline of biomechanics, I followed the engineering approach and used three volumes. In the first volume, Biomechanics: Mechanical Properties of Living Tissues, the geometrical struc ture and the rheological properties of various materials, tissues, and organs are presented. In the second volume, Biodynamics: Circulation, the physiology of blood circulation is analyzed by the engineering method.

Book excerpt: This monograph is a structured review of models of oculomotor control systems that is geared toward biomedical engineers, vision scientists, and optometry students. It aims to provide the biomedical engineer with a thorough understanding of how various engineering control principles are applied to oculomotor systems, and the non-engineer with knowledge of how various physiological and clinical concepts can be represented quantitatively and efficiently by control system models.Basic control system concepts and oculomotor physiology are first introduced, along with a glossary, to provide background for the more advanced topics. Then, these concepts are applied to static linear and nonlinear analysis of various oculomotor systems. In addition, advanced topics are presented on the application of dynamic linear and nonlinear modeling techniques to the oculomotor system, with a particular emphasis on myopia development. This book can thus serve as a unique reference for quantitative analysis of oculomotor control, and as a foundation for future research on the oculomotor system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At labs around the world, researchers have been experimenting with bioprinting, first just to see whether it was possible to push cells through a printhead without killing them (in most cases it is), and then trying to make cartilage, bone, skin, blood vessels, small bits of liver and other tissues. There are other ways to try to “engineer” tissue — one involves creating a scaffold out of plastics or other materials and adding cells to it. In theory, at least, a bioprinter has advantages in manipulating control of the placement of cells and other components to mimic natural structures. But just as the claims made for 3-D printing technology sometimes exceed the reality, the field of bioprinting has seen its share of hype. The reality is that, although bioprinting researchers have made great strides, there are many formidable obstacles to overcome. Nobody who has any credibility claims they can print organs, or believes in their heart of hearts that that will happen in the next 20 years, but for operations like hip replacement, advance in Bio-printing has made customization of certain body parts possible. This book will start from the concept of Tissue Engineering, covering various approaches in Scaffolds for tissue engineering, Bioprinting techniques and Materials for bioprinting, Cell processing, 3D cell culture techniques, Computational design and simulation, multi-disciplinary approaches in bioprinting and finally cover the applications of bioprinting.

It is an ethnography of New Chinese Migrants in the context of South- South migration, but also a first ethnography of Chinese in Suriname, as well as an analysis of Surinamese ethnic discourse and ethnopolitics. Starting in the 1990s, renewed immigration from China changed the dynamics of the Surinamese Chinese community, which developed from a Hakka enclave to a culturally and linguistically diverse, modern Chinese migrant group. Local positioning strategies of Chinese had always depended on ethnic entrepreneurship and political participation, but were now complicated by anti-immigrant sentiments.

Om hun belangen beter te kunnen verdedigen sluiten sommige individuen zich aan bij sociale bewegingen, die tot sociale protesten kunnen leiden.
