Book excerpt: The topic of this book is the theoretical foundations of a theory LSLT -- Lexical Semantic Language Theory - and its implementation in a the system for text analysis and understanding called GETARUN, developed at the University of Venice, Laboratory of Computational Linguistics, Department of Language Sciences. LSLT encompasses a psycholinguistic theory of the way the language faculty works, a grammatical theory of the way in which sentences are analysed and generated -- for this we will be using Lexical-Functional Grammar -- a semantic theory of the way in which meaning is encoded and expressed in utterances -- for this we will be using Situation Semantics -, and a parsing theory of the way in which components of the theory interact in a common architecture to produce the needed language representation to be eventually spoken aloud or interpreted by the phonetic/acoustic language interface. LSLT will then be put to use to show how discourse relations are mapped automatically from text using the tools available in the 4 sub-theories, and in particular we will focus on Causal Relations showing how the various sub-theories contribute to address different types of causality.

Book excerpt: This volume collects some of the papers presented at the 16th IARTEM Conference held in Florence in April 2022. It was a ’difficult conference’, held at a time when the pandemic was still present, and therefore an important opportunity to resume a dialogue that seemed to have been interrupted. The richness of the content, which is the result of the reflections of authors from all over the world, allows us to provide a precise scenario of the research state of art in the field of textbooks and digital resources for teaching.

But for young Nick Ilsanto, that day would turn into his worst nightmare, its tragedy propagating a new kind of plague, one spawned by avarice and hate, destined to bring America, and Europe, to its knees. Nick Ilsanto and the Scourge of the Black Hand details Nick’s twentyfour- year odyssey to find the man known as “il Lupo,” “the Wolf,” the cause of his nightmare and, eventually, the world’s. While pursuing the leader of the terrorist organization known as the Black Hand, Nick, driven by revenge, vows to destroy both “il Lupo” and the Hand- why the Wolf wants him, more than anyone else on earth, dead. A crime novel and love story featuring some of America’s most legendary figures, including P.T. Barnum, Teddy Roosevelt, and John L. Sullivan, “Nick Ilsanto” is also an epic tale of America’s reality and myths regarding justice, equality, racism and immigration.

Book excerpt: The very best of Italian cooking with Michela, Romina and Emanuela in Simply Italian. 'Wales and Italy, family and food: for us, these four things are inextricably linked and at the root of our upbringing. Whether at the family home in Wales or when we spend holidays in the small hilltop village we are from in northern Italy, we have always heard Dad say that 'la tavola' (the table) is the central focus of our lives. It's where we cook, eat and socialise as a family.' Michela, Emanuela and Romina Chiappa grew up in Wales in the heart of a close-knit Italian community where food was always at the centre of family and social gatherings. Whether searching for porcini in the hills near their parents' home, or making pasta for Christmas Eve with the whole family, to sharing food at the annual Welsh-Italian summer picnic, the three sisters have been immersed in the Italian way of cooking all their lives. In their first cookbook they share their cherished family recipes, including all the pasta dishes recently seen in their Channel 4 series Simply Italian. From snacks, soups and salads, to mains, side dishes and desserts, Simply Italian brings you good, simple, fresh Italian food. Michela works as an agent in a sports management company, as well running a coffee and pizza café in Cardiff with her husband. Of the sisters, she's the risotto expert and also loves to make pasta sauces. Romina works for a luxury fashion brand is London, and loves to bake for friends and family. Emanuela runs an online business selling bespoke homemade gifts for children, and works as a nanny. She loves to cook time-consuming meals and entertain large groups.

Book excerpt: Roberto Benigni, the Italian comedian, actor, director, and writer, gained international fame when his film La vita è bella/ Life Is Beautiful (1997) won three Oscars in 1999, including Best Foreign Film and Best Actor. Benigni has been a steady presence in Italian popular culture since the mid-1970s. This book introduces Benigni's performances in film, stage, and television, little known outside of Italy, with an emphasis on the cultural and intellectual backdrops that characterize his films, including his origins among the Tuscan rhyming poets and his experiences in the Roman avant-garde theater. Benigni's statements about his experiences and apprenticeships with cinema notables like Cesare Zavattini and Federico Fellini reveal a wealth of fresh information and confirm the sense that there is more to this madcap buffoon than meets the eye.

Book excerpt: The domain of evaluative morphology is vast and complex, as it requires the combination of morphological, semantic and pragmatic information to be understood. Nevertheless, cross-linguistic studies on spoken languages show that languages share some patterns in the way they encode evaluative features. It follows that investigating evaluative morphology in sign languages (SLs) can enrich the literature and offer new insights. This book provides descriptive and theoretical contributions by considering Italian Sign Language (LIS) as empirical ground of investigation. At the descriptive level, the analysis of corpus and elicited data improves the description of morphological processes in LIS, as well as typological studies on evaluative morphology by adding the patterns of a visuo-gestural language. At the theoretical level, the study shows the benefit of combining different approaches (Generative Linguistics, Linguistic Typology, Cognitive Linguistics) for the exploration of evaluative constructions in SLs, as it allows to identify both modality-specific and modality-independent properties. In sum, this book encourages the readers to rely on different data types, analyses and theoretical perspectives to investigate linguistic phenomena in SLs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Nunan’s dynamic learner-centered teaching style has informed and inspired countless TESOL educators around the world. In this fresh, straightforward introduction to teaching English to speakers of other languages he presents teaching techniques and procedures along with the underlying theory and principles. Complex theories and research studies are explained in a clear and comprehensible, yet non-trivial, manner without trivializing them. Practical examples of how to develop teaching materials and tasks from sound principles provide rich illustrations of theoretical constructs. The content is presented through a lively variety of different textual genres including classroom vignettes showing language teaching in action, question and answer sessions, and opportunities to ‘eavesdrop’ on small group discussions among teachers and teachers in preparation. Readers get involved through engaging, interactive pedagogical features and opportunities for reflection and personal application. Each chapter follows the same format so that readers know what to expect as they work through the text. Key terms are defined in a Glossary at the end of the book. David Nunan’s own reflections and commentaries throughout enrich the direct, up-close style of the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest untold stories about the globalization of the Western is the key role of comics. Few American cultural exports have been as successful globally as the Western, a phenomenon commonly attributed to the widespread circulation of fiction, film, and television. The Comic Book Western centers comics in the Western’s international success. Even as readers consumed translations of American comic book Westerns, they fell in love with local ones that became national or international sensations. These essays reveal the unexpected cross-pollinations that allowed the Western to emerge from and speak to a wide range of historical and cultural contexts, including Spanish and Italian fascism, Polish historical memory, the ideology of shōjo manga from Japan, British post-apocalypticism and the gothic, race and identity in Canada, Mexican gender politics, French critiques of manifest destiny, and gaucho nationalism in Argentina. The vibrant themes uncovered in The Comic Book Western teach us that international comic book Westerns are not hollow imitations but complex and aesthetically powerful statements about identity, culture, and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When America began to emerge as a world power at the end of the nineteenth century, Italy was a young nation, recently unified. The technological advances brought about by electricity and the combustion engine were vastly speeding up the capacity of news, ideas, and artefacts to travel internationally. Furthermore, improved literacy and social reforms had produced an Italian working class with increased time, money, and education. At the turn of the century, if Italy's ruling elite continued the tradition of viewing Paris as a model of sophistication and good taste, millions of lowly-educated Italians began to dream of America, and many bought a transatlantic ticket to migrate there. By the 1920s, Italians were encountering America through Hollywood films and, thanks to illustrated magazines, they were mesmerised by the sight of Manhattan's futuristic skyline and by news of American lifestyle. The USA offered a model of modernity which flouted national borders and spoke to all. It could be snubbed, adored, or transformed for one's personal use, but it could not be ignored. Perversely, Italy was by then in the hands of a totalitarian dictatorship, Mussolini's Fascism. What were the effects of the nationalistic policies and campaigns aimed at protecting Italians from this supposedly pernicious foreign influence? What did Mussolini think of America? Why were jazz, American literature, and comics so popular, even as the USA became Italy's political enemy? America in Italian Culture provides a scholarly and captivating narrative of this epochal shift in Italian culture.
