Book excerpt: Winner of the 2019 Outstanding Book Award - ASC DCCSJ Trapped in a Vice explores the consequences of a juvenile justice system that is aimed at promoting change in the lives of young people, yet ultimately relies upon tools and strategies that enmesh them in a system that they struggle to move beyond. The system, rather than the crimes themselves, is the vice. Trapped in a Vice explores the lives of the young people and adults in the criminal justice system, revealing the ways that they struggle to manage the expectations of that system; these stories from the ground level of the justice system demonstrate the complex exchange of policy and practice.

Book excerpt: First published in 1971, Livy is a collection of essays that deals with Livy’s work and its influence on the scholarship of Western Europe. The monumental nature of Livy’s History makes it a source of material for all those interested in the means by which Rome grew into an Imperial power and in the institutions that made her great. Later generations have also sought in Livy’s pages for some magic formula that they could apply to the management of their own cities. The volume includes three chapters on the surviving portions of Livy, one on the history of Livian scholarship in Germany, and – commemorating the Machiavelli quincentenary – one on Livy and Machiavelli. There are also chapters on Livy’s influence on Montesquieu, on the use made of Livy by Macaulay, and on the Florentine Manuscripts of Livy which were such prized possessions in the sixteenth century. This book will be of interest to students of classical literature, history and philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of ideas on rule of law for world order is a fascinating one, as revealed in this comparative study of both Eastern and Western traditions. This book discerns 'rule of law as justice' conceptions alternative to the positivist conceptions of the liberal internationalist rule of law today. The volume begins by revisiting early-modern European roots of rule of law for world order thinking. In doing so it looks to Northern Humanism and to natural law, in the sense of justice as morally and reasonably ordered self-discipline. Such a standard is not an instrument of external monitoring but of self-reflection and self-cultivation. It then considers whether comparable concepts exist in Chinese thought. Inspired by Confucius and even Laozi, the Chinese official and intellectual elite readily imagined that international law was governed by moral principles similar to their own. A series of case studies then reveals the dramatic change after the East-West encounters from the 1860s until after 1901, as Chinese disillusionment with the Hobbesian positivism of Western international law becomes ever more apparent. What, therefore, are the possibilities of traditional Chinese and European ethical thinking in the context of current world affairs? Considering the obstacles which stand in the way of this, both East and West, this book reaches the conclusion that everything is possible even in a world dominated by state bureaucracies and late capitalist postmodernism. The rational, ethical spirit is universal.

Authors Martusewicz, Edmundson, and Lupinacci provide teachers, teacher educators, and educational scholars with the theory and classroom practices they need to help develop citizens who are prepared to support and achieve diverse, democratic, and sustainable societies in an increasingly globalized world. Readers are asked to consider curricular strategies to bring these issues to life in their own classrooms across disciplines. Designed for introductory educational foundations and multicultural education courses, EcoJustice Education is written in a narrative, conversational style grounded in place and experience, but also pushes students to examine the larger ideological, social, historical, and political contexts of the crises humans and the planet we inhabit are facing. Fully updated with cutting-edge research, statistics, and current events throughout, the third edition addresses important topics such as Indigenous learning, Black Lives Matter, the Flint Water Crisis, Standing Rock, the rise of fascism, and climate change, and develops EcoJustice approaches to confronting these issues.
