Book excerpt: The sensationalism and hysteria of the rescue attempt in early 1925 generated America's first true media spectacle, making Floyd Collins's story one of the seminal events of the century. The crowds that gathered outside Sand Cave turned the rescue site into a carnival. Collins's situation was front-page news throughout the country, hourly bulletins interrupted radio programs, and Congress recessed to hear the latest word.

Book excerpt: Robin Jacobs is living a seemingly normal life until the night she is brutally raped, beaten, and left to die in a park only a block away from her house. Befriended by strangers and driven by a paralyzing fear that the man with the cold green eyes will never be caught, Robin lies helpless in a hospital bed as she watches the only life she has ever known disintegrate before her very eyes. Yet Robin knows she is a survivor and is determined to break free from the terrifying memories. With the support of her brother Paul and best friend Kate, Robin finds the strength to move past the attack and even falls in lovewithout ever knowing that the sequence of events that preceded the brutal rape will be far more detrimental to her future than she ever could have imagined. Worse yet, Robin is about to make a mistake that will cause more pain than the rape itself. As Robins life spirals out of control, she soon realizes that only she has the power to take it back from a madman who will stop at nothing until he achieves cold-blooded revenge.

Book excerpt: In 2010, the ALPHA collaboration achieved a first for mankind: the stable, long-term storage of atomic antimatter, a project carried out a the Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN. A crucial element of this observation was a dedicated silicon vertexing detector used to identify and analyze antihydrogen annihilations. This thesis reports the methods used to reconstruct the annihilation location. Specifically, the methods used to identify and extrapolate charged particle tracks and estimate the originating annihilation location are outlined. Finally, the experimental results demonstrating the first-ever magnetic confinement of antihydrogen atoms are presented. These results rely heavily on the silicon detector, and as such, the role of the annihilation vertex reconstruction is emphasized.

Book excerpt: This book is a new edition of Roederer’s classic Dynamics of Geomagnetically Trapped Radiation, updated and considerably expanded. The main objective is to describe the dynamic properties of magnetically trapped particles in planetary radiation belts and plasmas and explain the physical processes involved from the theoretical point of view. The approach is to examine in detail the orbital and adiabatic motion of individual particles in typical configurations of magnetic and electric fields in the magnetosphere and, from there, derive basic features of the particles’ collective “macroscopic” behavior in general planetary environments. Emphasis is not on the “what” but on the “why” of particle phenomena in near-earth space, providing a solid and clear understanding of the principal basic physical mechanisms and dynamic processes involved. The book will also serve as an introduction to general space plasma physics, with abundant basic examples to illustrate and explain the physical origin of different types of plasma current systems and their self-organizing character via the magnetic field. The ultimate aim is to help both graduate students and interested scientists to successfully face the theoretical and experimental challenges lying ahead in space physics in view of recent and upcoming satellite missions and an expected wealth of data on radiation belts and plasmas.

Book excerpt: At Les Houches in January 2015, experts in the field of charged particle trapping came together for the Second Winter School on Physics with Trapped Charged Particles. This textbook collates the lectures delivered there, covering the fundamental physics of particle traps and the different types of applications of these devices. Taken as a whole, the book gives an overview of why traps for charged particles are important, how they work, their special features and limitations, and their application in areas such as precision measurements, mass spectrometry, optical clocks, plasma physics, antihydrogen creation, quantum simulation and quantum information processing. Chapters from various world experts include those on the basic properties of Penning traps and RF traps, as well as those covering important practical aspects such as vacuum systems, detection techniques, and different types of particle cooling, including laser cooling. Each individual chapter provides information and guidance on the application of the above methods. Additionally, each chapter is complemented by fully worked problems and solutions, making Trapped Charged Particles perfect for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students new to this topic. Book excerpt: Finally a book that will not challenge the stories of religion, but rather help you understand and deal with the impact that "spiritual abuse " has had on relationships. "At last, here is a practical book for helping women and men address their problems by getting at the root causes--prehistoric events that led to male insecurity and the subordination of women, transmitted to us over the ages by religious views of a male God and inferior, submissive women. What Dr. Singer terms "spiritual abuse" is a major contributor to the problem between the sexes, and she provides a guide to help couples to escape from it." --Robert S. McElvaine Author, Eve's Seed: Biology, the Sexes and the Course of History Chair, Department of History, Millsaps College, Jackson, Ms. "What a clever and brilliant title ADAM WAS TRAPPED EVE WAS FRAMED and the substance of the book easily compliments the title. It is as good, or better than any book I have read on the quest for personal freedom. Part One, alone, on being "Awake" is worth the price of the book. Life is in session...are you present?" This book, in a beautiful and profound way, tells you how you can become "present" on your personal road to freedom." --William Edelen Former Minister of the First Congregational Church in Tacoma, Washington Lecturer for the Department of Religion at the University of Puget Sound Columnist, Writer and Lecturer Follow Adam and Eve in their therapy with Dr. Lita after he tells about his affair and he wants to leave the marriage, and watch what happens --- This is a book about Change. Your Change . ----Follow the five steps AWAKE, NOTICE, CATCH, INTERRUPT AND CHANGE, and you will have the keys to Partnership, Balance and Freedom . ---It is not what happens in your life, but how you deal with it that matters . ---To find love, inner peace, is an inside job and starts with the journey within."

So, he decided to advance a plan that appeared highly favorable to his political adversaries—the men and women who supported Big Government. His Political Year Strategy was brilliantly simple—it merely called for Congress to change Election Day to February 29th. Once the election date changed, then “Year’ (as it related to elections and elected federal terms) could become the interval of time until the designated day used for elections again showed up on the calendar. Suddenly, it would appear that Presidents could serve four “Political Years”—16 calendar years—while Representatives could serve two political years (8 calendar years) and Senators six political years (24 calendar years). But, as his political adversaries sought implement his strategy—so they could extend their political terms four-fold—they wouldn’t notice that were simultaneously building Will the name recognition and political platform he had never been able to build himself. And, once he found his political voice, he would spring his trap, that he had baited with the promise of extended political terms. In other words, Will’s Political Year Strategy would advance Big Government so far, it would ultimately expose to the bright light of day the underlying fallacy of 200 years of the Supreme Court reinterpretation. Read Trapped by Political Desire: The Treatise and learn how to throw off two centuries of federal oppression, so we may finally restore our American Republic, Once and For All and Happily-Ever-After.
