Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the Philological Society, 1885-7 Tale, 1953, which occurs as a rime to registre. I remember Seeing a remark, I think in Notes and Queries, that this form baffles explanation; and, at any rate, Dr. Morris has not explained it. However, it presents no difficulty; the r is merely intrusive, and the word is equivalent to a Low Lat. Diuin-ista, formed by adding -ista to the stem of drain-as. To those who tell us that we cannot explain the r in this word, we have merely to reply that we are not called upon to do more than to declare it to be intrusive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transactions of the American Philological Association, 1884, Vol. 15 ON pedagogical as well as on other grounds the uses of the Greek genitive need to be more thoroughly understood, and more clearly presented in the elementary grammars; for no department of Greek syntax is more productive of confu sion of thought in young pupils. The grammars most in use differ greatly in their classification and in the statement of principles. Here, as elsewhere, categories based originally on mistaken notions are still retained, for the supposed comfort of the learner, after their reason for existence has long been recognized as illusory. Careful statement, with accompanying statistics, of the actual usage of the case, from Homer down, is urgently needed. It is the aim of this paper to give such a'statement with reference to Sophokles. The classification employed will be different in some respects from others which have been widely adopted; and will be more or less superior to them, it is hoped, because according more closely with the historical development of the case. And, in particular, the ablatival uses of the genitive will be shown to be more numer ous, and in some directions more clearly defined, in Sophokles at least, than the grammars would lead one to suppose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barrow’s timely book is the first to examine the link between Victorian poetry, the study of language, and political reform. Focusing on a range of literary, scientific, and political texts, Barrow demonstrates that nineteenth-century debates about language played a key role in shaping emergent ideas about popular sovereignty. While Victorian scientists studied the origins of speech, the history of dialects, and the barrier between human and animal language, poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Alfred Tennyson, and Thomas Hardy drew on this research to explore social unrest, the expansion of the electorate, and the ever-widening boundaries of empire. Science, Language, and Reform in Victorian Poetry recovers unacknowledged links between poetry, philology, and political culture, and contributes to recent movements in literary studies that combine historicist and formalist approaches.

Book excerpt: Archaeologists in Print is a history of popular publishing in archaeology in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a pivotal period of expansion and development in both archaeology and publishing. It examines how British archaeologists produced books and popular periodical articles for a non-scholarly audience, and explores the rise in archaeologists’ public visibility. Notably, it analyses women’s experiences in archaeology alongside better known male contemporaries as shown in their books and archives. In the background of this narrative is the history of Britain’s imperial expansion and contraction, and the evolution of modern tourism in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Archaeologists exploited these factors to gain public and financial support and interest, and build and maintain a reading public for their work, supported by the seasonal nature of excavation and tourism. Reinforcing these publishing activities through personal appearances in the lecture hall, exhibition space and site tour, and in new media – film, radio and television – archaeologists shaped public understanding of archaeology. It was spadework, scripted. The image of the archaeologist as adventurous explorer of foreign lands, part spy, part foreigner, eternally alluring, solidified during this period. That legacy continues, undimmed, today. Praise for Archaeologists in Print This beautifully written book will be valued by all kinds of readers: you don't need to be an archaeologist to enjoy the contents, which take you through different publishing histories of archaeological texts and the authors who wrote them. From the productive partnership of travel guide with archaeological interest, to the women who feature so often in the history of archaeological publishing, via closer analysis of the impact of John Murray, Macmillan and Co, and Penguin, this volume excavates layers of fascinating facts that reveal much of the wider culture of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The prose is clear and the stories compulsive: Thornton brings to life a cast of people whose passion for their profession lives again in these pages. Warning: the final chapter, on Archaeological Fictions, will fill your to-be-read list with stacks of new titles to investigate! This is a highly readable, accessible exploration into the dynamic relationships between academic authors, publishers, and readers. It is, in addition, an exemplar of how academic research can attract a wide general readership, as well as a more specialised one: a stellar combination of rigorous scholarship with lucid, pacy prose. Highly recommended!' Samantha Rayner, Director of UCL Centre for Publishing; Deputy Head of Department and Director of Studies, Department of Information Studies, UCL
