Book excerpt: A time-dependent approach employing a four-phase concentric cylinder model has been developed to predict the response of metal matrix composites (MMCs) subjected to thermomechanical loadings in which both plastic and creep responses of the composites are considered. The progressive development of plasticity in the matrix phase is determined using the deformation theory of plasticity while the creep deformation of this phase is estimated using the Bailey-Norton equation with an Arrhenius-type expression for the time-dependent creep coefficient. The model is applied to SCS-6/Ti-ß21S composite to study the evolution of the stress and strain states in the constituents of the composite during initial cool-down and subsequent thermal cycles. The model is then employed to examine the influence of several critical parameters on the composite internal stress and strain states. These parameters include the thickness of the equivalent composite media, the type of fiber coating material, the thickness of the reaction zone, cooling rate during initial cool-down, and the kinetics of creep process during thermal cyclic loading. Results of these applications indicated that the process-induced thermal stresses in the matrix phase can be relaxed due to creep following initial cool-down from fabrication. This stress reduction is enhanced at a slower cooling rate. Comparison of different fiber coating materials shows that the use of carbon coating induces compressive stress state in the brittle interfacial region. TiB2-coated fibers, however, are found to be less affected by the growing interphase thickness in preserving the compressive radial stress component in the matrix and the interphase zone. Furthermore, it is found that the matrix activation energy for creep, Q, is history-dependent and can be correlated with the level of creep strain accumulated in the matrix phase. In addition, the residual thermal stresses induced in the matrix phase during initial cool-down can be relaxed by the application of subsequent thermal cycles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aspects associated with high temperature damage in fiber reinforced Metal Matrix Composites were investigated and are presented in this report in the form of five separate sections. In the first section, the fatigue and fatigue crack growth characteristics in neat laminates made of Timetal 21S were studied in relation to both temperature and loading frequency effects. The second section deals with the evolution of the thermal residual stresses in the composite when cooling from consolidation temperature or subjecting the composite to then-nal cycles. A new mechanical simulation method capable of measuring the induced residual stress on real; time basis has been developed in this study. The third section extends this issue to the time-dependent internal stress and strain states of MMCs under the thermomechanical loading conditions. Here, a new micromechanical model employing the four-phase concentric cylinder configuration has been proposed. Based on this model, the time-dependent behavior of continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composites has been evaluated for the SCS-6/Timetal 21S composite. These results are presented in the fourth section. The last section of this report deals with the high temperature fatigue crack growth characteristics of the continuous fiber reinforced titanium metal matrix composite sigma l240/Timetal 12IS. The time- dependent features of the crack growth was examined in relation to the variation of both testing temperature and loading frequency. the principal damage mechanism of this composite under the load condition employed was identified to be the crack bridging and fiber/matrix debonding confined to regions near the crack surfaces ... Book excerpt: The accurate incorporation of interface effects on creep in metal matrix composites is contingent on the direct experimental determination of the deformation kinetics. The goal is accomplished by isolating the composite interface and precisely measuring the creep characteristics of the interface, by utilizing a fiber pushout apparatus to apply a constant force on the fiber of a model single fiber composite (SFC), so that the interface can creep under the applied shear stress. Two different model fiber/matrix systems one with no mutual solubility and the other with limited mutual solubility were investigated. In both systems, the interface displayed Bingham flow (diffusional flow with a threshold stress). The Finite Element Method (FEM) was utilized to check the conceptual validity of the test approach for one of the model systems, and to provide insight into the design of the sample and test apparatus. FEM was also utilized to estimate the residual radial stresses present in the model composite system following cooling from an elevated to ambient temperature. Based on the experimental results and the FEM analysis, an analytical model is advanced to incorporate the effect of radial residual stresses on the creep of the fiber/matrix interface. The model yields an explicit constitutive law which describes the stress, temperature, and matrix property dependence of interfacial creep. The model also indicates that the experimentally observed threshold stress is directly attributable to the radial stress acting on the fiber/matrix interface.

Here, a new micromechanical model employing the four-phase concentric cylinder configuration has been proposed. Based on this model, the time-dependent behavior of continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composites. It has been evaluated. These results are presented in the fourth section. The fifth, sixth and seventh sections of this report describe the influence of temperature and loading frequency on the crack growth process and suggest a fatigue-creep interactive mechanism acting at the crack tip during high temperature loadings. The last section of the report deals with the determination of the stress evolution in bridging fibers during the fatigue crack growth in SM 1240/Timetal-21S composite using the finite element method. Several parameters affecting this evolution were considered; namely, the process-induced residual stress, the creep characteristics of the matrix layer surrounding the fiber, the test temperature and the loading frequency.

Book excerpt: The objective of this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement between Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation and Dow Corning Corporation was to study the effects of temperature, stress, fiber type and fiber architecture on the time-dependent deformation and stress-rupture behavior of polymer-derived ceramic matrix composites developed by the Dow Corning Corporation. Materials reinforced with CG-Nicalon{trademark}, Hi-Nicalon{trademark} and Sylramic{reg_sign} fibers were evaluated under fast fracture, stress-relaxation, and stress-rupture conditions at temperatures between 700 C and 1400 C in ambient air and for stresses between 50 and 200 MPa. Some of the stress-rupture tests conducted as part of this program are among the longest-duration experiments ever conducted with these materials. The possibility of using accelerated test techniques to evaluate the very-long term stress-rupture/creep behavior of these materials was investigated by means of stress-relaxation experiments. However it was found that because these materials exhibit non-linear stress-strain behavior at stresses larger than the matrix cracking stress and because of environmentally-induced changes in the micro and mesostructure of the material, particularly at elevated temperatures, this approach is impractical. However, the results of stress-relaxation experiments will be useful to predict the behavior of these materials in applications where stresses are thermally-induced and therefore driven by strains (e.g., when components are subjected to thermal gradients). The evolution of the microstructure of the fibers, matrix and fiber-matrix interface was studied as a function of stress and temperature, using analytical electron microscopy. The results from these analyses were essential to understand the relationships between environment, stress, temperature and processing on the microstructure and properties of these materials.

Book excerpt: The usefulness of load-relaxation experiments in investigating the need for rate-dependent matrix material models for predicting the processing-induced residual stresses in metal matrix composites (MMCs) is examined in this study. The experimental data is used in the selection of the appropriate constitutive equations for modeling the cooling process after composite consolidation. Boron/Al-2024 MMC is chosen as the model material system. Bodner-Partom unified model and a classical creep-plasticity model based on the relaxation experiments are used to represent the rate-dependent behavior of Al-2024. The results show that conventional B-P model based on purely monotonic strain-rate tests is not able to capture the inelastic strain variations under practical cooling conditions. The classical creep-plasticity model has been shown to be an effective alternative for this purpose as it considers load-relaxation data while deriving the material constants for the constitutive equations.
