Book excerpt: This is simple story of the old homes on the Rappahannock River. The pioneer Rappahannock planter built his home not only for today and tomorrow, but for the day after tomorrow, and for the great, great grandchildren of his children. Many of these sturdy mansions have been victims of calamitous misfortune, and are no more. Others still feel the thrill of life,-in a greater or lesser degree,-and some of these we will consider. --

With European settlers arriving on its tranquil shores as early as the sixteenth century, the historical moments that occurred across this region were pivotal in the creation of our nation and its continued evolution. As time marched on, more and more landmarks lost their relevance and were left as abandoned vestiges of days gone by. In Abandoned Tidewater: Forgotten Relics of Southeastern Virginia, you'll explore some of these discarded places through vibrant imagery which shows what was left behind when man walked away. Learn more about the history and follow author and photographer, Nancy E. Sheppard, as she takes you on this incredible journey across Southeastern Virginia.

Book Synopsis America's Wetland by : Roy T. Sawyer
Download or read book America's Wetland written by Roy T. Sawyer and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geologically ancient Tidewater region of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina rests precariously atop millions of years of erosion from the nearby Appalachian Mountains. An immense wetland at near sea level, it is host to every conceivable body of fresh water, ranging from brooding swamps and large hidden lakes to sluggish blackwater rivers and brackish sounds (one of which was so large an early explorer thought he had found the Pacific Ocean). In this engaging book, biologist and Tidewater native Roy T. Sawyer delivers an ecohistory of this unique waterland whose wind-driven tides cover a rich human and natural past. Jutting prominently into the Atlantic, this wetland is the final stop for the warmth of the Gulf Stream before it is deflected from the American mainland. At the top of a narrow, warm coastal strip, it provides an ideal home for a vast array of animal and plant life, including prodigious numbers of reptiles (such as the world’s northernmost population of alligators) and overwintering waterfowl. It is also home to the oldest known living trees east of the Rocky Mountains. The climate and geography made the area a natural choice for very early human habitation--as far back as the last ice age, when the region was a rich oasis just south of a veritable tundra. In examining the impact of humans upon this environment, and vice-versa, Sawyer reveals how our alarming shortsightedness has produced a fragile and endangered present. Although human manipulation started here as early as ten thousand years ago (coinciding with extinction of mammoths and other megafauna), the environment has been altered most radically over only the last one hundred years, particularly in regard to land drainage, deforestation, overfishing, and pollution. The author provides an authoritative overview of the human impact on these wetlands and suggests ways in which we might still salvage them. In so doing, he explores the effects of hurricanes, droughts, forest fires, and ice ages of the past--and anticipates, in this age of global warming, natural events that may be still to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Lower Tidewater Virginia, Vol. 1 This Lower Tidewater area of Virginia is closely knit together by the common harbor of its component communities, Hampton Roads. It is, both from the cultural and economic points of view, one of the most interesting parts of Virginia, and in those regards second to few areas of the English speaking territories of the North American continent. Here were made some of the first explorations outside the English settle ment at Roanoke Island in 1585. Here the Colonists sent out by the London Company made their first landings in 1607, before arriving at Jamestown. Here the Anglican communion and the English common law gained their earliest footholds, second only to Jamestown, and here one of the four great corporations was laid out in 1619 and three of the eight original counties were established in 1634. Here are preserved the third oldest continuous county records in Virginia dating from 1637; here are located the two oldest existing municipalities, established by law in 1680, one of which was to be come the second of the only two chartered in Virginia before the American Revolution. Here is located, also, the oldest continuous settlement in British America, dating from 1610. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
