Book excerpt: A thoughtful consideration of the current level of development of multigrid methods, this volume is a carefully edited collection of papers that addresses its topic on several levels. The first three chapters orient the reader who is familiar with standard numerical techniques to multigrid methods, first by discussing multigrid in the context of standard techniques, second by detailing the mechanics of use of the method, and third by applying the basic method to some current problems in fluid dynamics. The fourth chapter provides a unified development, complete with theory, of algebraic multigrid (AMG), which is a linear equation solver based on multigrid principles. The last chapter is an ambitious development of a very general theory of multigrid methods for variationally posed problems. Included as an appendix is the latest edition of the Multigrid Bibliography, an attempted compilation of all existing research publications on multigrid.

Download or read book Three Dimensional Grid Generation for Complex Configurations written by J. F. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This AGARDograph surveys some of the capabilities of the CFD community for griding complex three-dimensional configurations. The intent is to provide some insight as to the present state of grid generation for aircraft configurations in order to help assess whether this task presents a long term stumbling block to routine use of CFD in aerodynamic applications. This AGARDograph begins with a brief review of some of the techniques that are available for generating body-conforming curvilinear grids. In order to assess capabilities in grid generation, colleagues at selected institutions were solicited to describe their experiences and difficulties in grid generation of complex configurations. The intent here was not to describe the very latest in grid generation procedures, but to solicit honest comments about what are the difficulties in generating practical grids and what steps are taken to meet these difficulties. These experiences, which comprise the heart of this AGARDograph, are presented as case histories. Keywords: Computational fluid dynamics; Nato furnished; Aerodynamic configuration; Grids(coordinates); Computation; Computer graphics; Wing body configurations; Generating functions; Evaluation. (JHD).

Book excerpt: The efficient multilevel adaptive method has been successfully applied to perform direct numerical simulations (DNS) of flow transition in 3-D channels and 3-D boundary layers with 2-D and 3-D isolated and distributed roughness in a curvilinear coordinate system. A fourth-order finite difference technique on stretched and staggered grids, a fully-implicit time marching scheme, a semi-coarsening multigrid method associated with line distributive relaxation scheme, and an improved outflow boundary-condition treatment, which needs only a very short buffer domain to damp all order-one wave reflections, are developed. These approaches make the multigrid DNS code very accurate and efficient. This allows us not only to be able to do spatial DNS for the 3-D channel and flat plate at low computational costs, but also to do spatial DNS for transition in the 3-D boundary layer with 3-D single and multiple roughness elements, which would have extremely high computational costs with conventional methods. Numerical results show good agreement with the linear stability theory, the secondary instability theory, and a number of laboratory experiments. The contribution of isolated and distributed roughness to transition is analyzed. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective is to develop a domain decomposition method via overlapping/embedding the component grids, which is to be used by upwind, multi-grid, finite volume solution algorithms. A computer code, given the name MaGGiE (Multi-Geometry Grid Embedder) is developed to meet this objective. MaGGiE takes independently generated component grids as input, and automatically constructs the composite mesh and interpolation data, which can be used by the finite volume solution methods with or without multigrid convergence acceleration. Six demonstrative examples showing various aspects of the overlap technique are presented and discussed. These cases are used for developing the procedure for overlapping grids of different topologies, and to evaluate the grid connection and interpolation data for finite volume calculations on a composite mesh. Time fluxes are transferred between mesh interfaces using a trilinear interpolation procedure. Conservation losses are minimal at the interfaces using this method. The multi-grid solution algorithm, using the coaser grid connections, improves the convergence time history as compared to the solution on composite mesh without multi-gridding.
